England National football team thread

I said Jarvis because there are no other proper wingers in the squad. Tbh don't know much about Jarvis but I'm assuming he's a pacey, direct winger so I put him in.

Not sure whether you have seen this but I saw this from Opta.

11 - Matt Jarvis has made more crosses per 90 minutes than any player in the Premier League this season. Call-up

Also, I have seen Jarvis in a couple of Wolves games this season. He is quick, doesn't dribble too much and always look put crosses in as soon as he can. The accuracy of his crosses are pretty amazing too.

It's always dangerous and with the likes of Carroll and Crouch in the England squad, Jarvis can supply those wicked crosses for them to score or doing something useful with it.

I've seen Jarvis a fair few times and his crosses are top-notch. He's a good player and is there on merit.

Although it looks like his international career is over, a Carrick-Wilshere combo in midfield would be very interesting. Carrick's best form came alongside a slightly younger Paul Scholes and Wilshere is the closest player to the 2006- Scholes England have so that wouldn't be a bad idea by any means.

Dr. Pepper said:
Thing is with Carrick, him and Wilshere would be a better combo than Lampard-Wilshire. Even against Denmark there were a lot of gaps in midfield when off the ball, and realistically can't see it working.

Hmm well now that i think back to that season when this happened, you two probably have a point i guess.

I'm not sure what you lot see in Richards, he's only marginally better than Johnson. I'd rather have 'Pool's Kelly in my starting line-up.

Yea not saying Richards is superbly better than Johnson - Johnson is slightly more dynamic going forward for eg. But Johnson remains very suspect defensively & has done nothing for England or Liverpool since his disaster performance vs Germany in the WC to alleviate those fears. So against a Wales where he will be up against Bale is very nervy proposition.

Micah Richards as Dr.Pepper correctly stated, he is fairly commanding defensively, which is good start for dealing with Bale (Richards on his international debut i remember keeping Arjen Robben fairly quiet also). So now that this season now that he has begun to focus on his football, a more matured Richards is best option ENG have right now @ RB to deal with Bale & long term.

Kelly & Richards would be my main two full-backs for ENG. Johnson shouldn't be in the squad.

I don't think Rio will retire from international football but now would probably be a good time, for many reasons. I'm amazed Smalling missed out on the squad, he's been fantastic during his recent run in our injury hit side.

Well i hope he doesn't. I still see him being the answer England defensive mid-field problem between now & EURO 2012 as we discussed before. Early reports suggests he wont - which is a relief. BBC Sport - Football - Ferdinand to play on for England after losing captaincy

I like Downing because he's good technically but doesn't have the physique to play out wide for England I think, but also lacks the vision to play centrally (not to mention the fact there are better players centrally).

Yea Jarvis & Downing are only in because Walcott & Johnson aren't fit currently basically. I was getting worried privately that he would pick SWP, but thankfully Capello has realised he is useless :lol Cant write of Jarvis or rate him just yet, but we have seen enough of Downing in the past & for reasons your correctly highlighted he has proven not to be international quality

Jarvis' versatility on both flanks is also a useful aspect of his game. Speaking of Wolves, it's a pity Kightly's suffered so many injury problems since they got promoted.

He looked quality in the lower leagues, outstanding for Grays and then Wolves got him for a bargain price. Definitely looked like he could play successfully at a higher level when he was in the Championship.

Yeah, remember that game well because I had a bunch of friends over at the time.

Great goal by Beckham as well, from a part of his game that unfortunately seemed to regress as he got older. His long range shooting used to be deadly when he was just starting to make a name for himself in the Utd first team.

Gareth Bale ruled out of Wales v England clash - report - ESPN Soccernet

Takes a great deal of excitement out of the clash for me :(.

True.

Would have to agree with Pearce here, although i would understand the complaints of Wenger & Danglish over potential burnout for Wilshire & Carroll. England team has needs so the clubs need to back up. This would be a good tournament experience for both those two (although they are basically ENG regulars now) for EURO 20102. Since as most are aware, such experienced in the 2009 under-21 cup, helped Germany's young stars in the 2010 world cup.

England under-21 look really strong @ full-strength then:

--------------------------------------Loach/Fielding-----------------------------------

Kelly/Walker---------------Richards---------------Smalling------------------Gibbs

------------------------------Rodwell---------------Muamba/Cattermole------------

-----------------------------------------------Wilshire---------------------------------

Albrington------------------------------Carroll------------------------------Sturridge

Wickham, Welbeck, Henderson, Jones, Landsbury, McEachran, Cleverley, Chamberlain, Spearing, Gosling, Tomkins (even Walcott maybe) as talented back-ups. Got a solid group of youngsters with excellent premiership experience. We all should keep an eye on this team.

All noises aside. Just as it was in the World Cup 2010 qualifiers in the 4-1 win vs Croatia - Capello has again stumbled upon the best England formation. Wonderful fluid 4-3-3 set-up.

Just replace Dawson, Lampard, Young, Bent - with Ferdinand, Gerrard, Walcott, Carroll. But it would be EXTREMELY hard to drop Young on this current form though. Plus although many expected Carroll to start, Bent good 2011 in front of goal means England have alot of quality strikers now - which is great.

Big shouts to Parker as well. I always thought based on form this season that he could be the man the replace Hargreaves as the defensive-midfielder the mid-field lacks since the decline of Barry & he showed that today.

Johnson also looked fairly better defensively today.

Wilshire just looks so sexy (no homo) in mid-field. We officially have our version of Xavi/Pirlo. So great signs all-round looking ahead to the future....COME ON ENGLAND..

Yep excellent performance, very promising. Parker and Wilshere so assured in midfield. Young was threatening on the wing, hell even Johnson had a good game!

My problem with Carroll playing is that England could so easily regress back to hoofing it up to the big man. When they don't play a target man, and they have 3 centre mids, there is so much more emphasis on possession and passing. Carroll is a very talented player, but I think the repercussions of him play are that England will just stop playing it around so well. Having him on the bench as a plan B looks good though.

Sadly, the game did not turn out to be a contest that most people were hoping for. :facepalm

Seems that 4-3-3 is the way to go - as the lads said, we looked fluid, flexible and full of ideas. Now we need to see England play like that more often - get some consistency. Sometimes they look like they've never met each other before (SA 2010) and then today, they play like a well oiled Premiership team.

Of course, Capello has already said that he might not stick with that system - that it depends on what the opposition are doing. Stuff what the opposition are doing, play England to their strengths and 4-3-3 is clearly the way to go!

That was indeed 'sexy football' from England today! In some ways, Wilshere reminds me of a faster version of Scholesey, and I'd love to see Utd move for Scott Parker - he's the sort of midfielder we need to add some steel.

Edit: I reckon it would've turned out the same even if Bale had played. If we'd done that against Germany last year, they certainly wouldn't have had it so easy.

Yea i dont mind having him as plan B currently. But to be fair to Carroll & the other ENG players, i think when Carroll eventually begins to lead the line fully, would think the players will be smart enough to not get suckered into the long-ball tactic & play for possession. Especially if Carroll shows his goal-scoring potential.

But for now if Capello feels Bent is the man he wants starting. Carroll could very well & go to the under-21 tournament this summer & get that tournament experience in preparation for EURO 2012.
