England National football team thread

England passing the ball around and playing fluid football. What the hell is going on? Downing and Young looked very good. Barry gave a solid display in the middle. Carroll was utilised well and not just stupid long balls from defence. May not have won, but a very promising display.

I have seen some in the media inaccurately again portraying the talk the Capello played 4-4-2 all the time, before he recently tried the 4-3-3 setup - that is really true at all.

Yes he played 4-4-2 in the world cup & in all the post post world cup before the Wales & Ghana games. But during the world cup qualifiers from Zagreb 08 to the end of the qualifiers - Capello played 4-2-3-1:

--------------------------------------Green/James----------------------------------------

Johnson-------------------Ferdinand--------------Terry--------------------------A Cole

----------------------------Lampard------------Barry-------------------------------------

Walcott/Lennon-----------------------------------------------------------Gerrard-------

--------------------------------------Rooney---------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------Heskey-----------------------------------------

Haha ye he is right, although as we all know Capello has now moved away from the 4-4-2 set-up.

Along with Parker id say Barton would be the next best defensive-midfielder in England & id be picking him ahead of Barry these days for sure.

Barton's a ████ but he's a jack of all trades. Very good passer of the ball, good set-piece taker, great tackler, fantastic engine, capable of shooting accurately from long distance etc.

It's difficult to simply shoe-horn the likes of Barton and Parker as simply defensive midfielders, given they're hybrids. While Parker played the holding role quite competently in the last game, he's always played a far more industrious role at club level.

But with the only "natural" DM Hargreaves dead, it's probably the best option in a 4-5-1.

Yea good point about Parker & Barton. They really aren't your archetypal DM like a Hargreaves, Alex Song, L Diarra etc for sure. As you they are jack-of-all trades & are versatile enough to play DMs competently for club & country given they have great engines & tackle very well.
