An upgrade over Welbeck for the moment really.
Sort of yea, but in a way i don't think Welbeck & Carroll would be challenging for the same spot.
When all fit i reckon Hodgson based on the last two serious games vs Brazil & Montenegro has settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation, where Rooney will start up top, Walcott wide right & Welbeck versatility placing him on the left.
That would leave space in the squad for 2 more strikers. Defore/Sturridge are similar in the box strikers, i would only pick one even if both are on form for their clubs. Last place would then go to Carroll since of the different style he brings.
While England continue frustratingly to try to be better @ passing the ball in mid-field, they are times in games in the future when that tactic fails, England may have to play like West Ham at the international level as a 2nd option. This is where Carroll will be very handy. England have enough good wingers who will cross the ball into him effectively too in such a scenario.
