England National football team thread

Hmm ye i guess that's an interesting point. The likes of Fletcher, Maloney, Naismith, Morrison aren't are guaranteed started at their premier league clubs (Hutton before @ spurs before he left).

But i guess they are still sort of Scotland's best players since at least they have are at premiership clubs. Delicate balancing act.

Lambert and Holt simple are not international standard. Age is irrelevant. Last season people clamored for him to be in the euros squad. Look how many goals he has this season. Both decent, previously underrated players, but simple not good enough to perform at the toppest level.

Crouch is kind of a meh for me. The best of that sort we have, done okay when he has played at that level, but would score <1 in four in real, proper matches. Carroll is still an unknown to an extent. Has looked a worldbeater at times, but those time are about 30 minutes every 7 games or so.

England have two proven goalscorer types- Defoe and Bent. Neither have done that well internationally, but if Rooney is off them and the side plays "proper football" they will both do well.

Yea agreed 100%. Sometimes you tell when a player is just a premiership player & Lambert, Holt & Crouch (although he got his goals for England) comes across as simply just that.

Although i'd say Sturridge is showing the instincts to be a proven goal-scorer like Defoe & Bent. Poor Bent has been frozen out @ Villa, hope some mid-level club takes him next season, because it was only recently Capello had him leading the line with some decent performances in the EURO 2012 qualifiers.

As you said with Carroll, he looks like he could be world-beater like battering ram type striker that could actually be a threat at international level for sure. Ran Sweden ragged in the Euro's. I think West Ham is the perfect club for him.

I think Carrol will end up like Duncan Ferguson. Unplayable on his day, but for various reasons those days will be too few for him to be a top player

Would rather he didn't play for England. He is far too injury prone for us to have to risk even further problems through playing internationals. However, if Taylor hadn't been injured so much in his career, I really think he could have been a superb CB for England

Ye he probably could have been. I recall him getting a call-up circa 2007 under the dark tenure of Steven McClaren after impressing at under 21 level. Certainly always looked like a future defender, but as you said, all his injuries has slowed down his progress.

To be fair he was unplayable because he was usually suspended or in prison.

Or injured. His back was essentially the same as Flintoff's ankle.

And he used to miss a lot of matches due to illnesses he caught off his pigeons.
