The England camp set off today from London's Heathrow airport bound for Delhi. A difficult tour greets them as an in-form Indian squad is hoping to build on their comprehensive test series win over world champions Australians. The series will consist of 7 One Day Internationals aswell as 2 Test matches.

England's recent ODI and Test run has been quite convincing with a 4-0 win over the South Africans earlier this year. Landing at 9:00am at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport was always going to be a positive for England as they could take the day off relaxing in the Indian heat.

However, it was back to work for the England camp. England captain Kevin Pietersen expressed his views in a press conference.

"Touring India is always tough"
England Captain said:
Touring India is always tough for any team. They have the players and the upcoming youngsters to blow us over. However, as captain of this England squad I am going to give it my level best and hopefully we can head back to England with some good results under our belt.

England 183 for 8 (Patel 43*, Shah 42 ; Pathan 3-43) beat India 181 for 7 (R.Sharma 39 ; Harmison 3-25, Broad 3-32) by 2 wickets.

Samit Patel was England's
hero smashing an unbeaten 43

England begun their campaign in India with a thrilling game of cricket at Rajkot. Chasing 182 on a wicket favoring the bowlers was always going to be difficult. However, a dogged 43* from Samit Patel stole the match from the Indians' grasp with 2 balls to spare.

England won the toss and elected to field on a dusty wicket with sunny conditions. England started well with Stuart Broad removing India's strong top-order for under 30 runs. And when Yusuf Pathan was dismissed for 9, England were on top as India had reached 46/4 in 15 overs.

Yuvraj Singh and Indian skipper MS Dhoni took the attack to England despite the loss of 4 wickets. At the end of the 30th over, India had reached 100/3. England Skipper Kevin Pietersen introduced Samit Patel into the attack. Immediately both Yuvraj and Dhoni were struggling to pick him as the pitch was also favouring the spinners. After many close shaves, Patel finally dismissed the Indian Skipper for 31. Dhoni advanced down the wicket and attempted to heave the ball towards Mid-Off. However, he picked out Ian Bell on the boundary as India looked to be slipping away. Steve Harmison came back towards the death and dismissed Yuvraj for 33.

However, a quickfire 39 from Rohit Sharma and some vital contributions from the lower-order propelled India to 181 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.

England's reply started off well with openers Ian Bell and Matt Prior playing conservatively. Recently re-called seamer Irfan Pathan proved to the selectors that he was the man as he dismissed both Bell and Prior in the same over. This brought Owais Shah and Skipper Kevin Pietersen to the wicket with the score at a reasonable 50/2 off 15 overs.

Knowing that the pitch was deteriorating, Dhoni did not hesitate to bring on his prime spin bowler, Harbhajan Singh. Shah and Pietersen struggled to get singles off him as the run rate increased and Harbhajan's figures 6-3-9-0. With the run rate required rising, Shah attempted to slog sweep Yusuf Pathan. The ball struck the inside edge of the bat and smashed into the stumps as Shah trudged off for his 42(101). Pietersen took the attack to Harbhajan as he advanced down the wicket and placed the ball over the boundary. However, Harbhajan struck the very next ball. Pietersen failed to read the quicker one and was caught on the crease as Harbhajan waved him goodbye and England's hopes were starting to fade.

At 90/4(36), England looked to Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff for some quick runs. Collingwood did not last long as he edged behind to 1st slip. With 82 runs required off 78 balls the pressure was on. Samit Patel joined Flintoff as the two upped the ante. Dhoni looked to Zaheer Khan in the death overs and the plan worked. Zaheer gave a foot crushing yorker to Flintoff who attempted to give it a feather of a touch to third-man. With Flintoff gone, and the equation 33 off 24 balls, all hopes rested on youngster Samit Patel. The task was made even more difficult as Pathan and Zaheer were getting reverse-swing. Patel and Broad managed just 12 off the 2 overs which meant that the last 2 overs would require 21 runs.

Irfan Pathan was to bowl his final over. Ball one disappeared into the stands as Pathan lost his length. Patel managed a single to get him onto 35 off 34. Broad was moving all over the crease. Due to this Pathan missed his line and Broad glided the ball to the vacant fine-leg boundary. With 10 runs off 8 balls the game was right back with England. With 8 off the last over, Zaheer was ready and pumped up.

Zaheer dismissed Broad with an in swinging Yorker as the game once again tilted into the Indians favour. The new man was Steve Harmison. He immedialty rushed for the single which meant that England needed 7 off 4 balls. Zaheer rushed into bowl with the crowd roaring in the background. Zaheer held his head in his hands as Patel had inside edged it for a boundary. Zaheer needed a dot ball here. However, Patel saw that the field was up and hit the ball aerial over Extra Cover for a boundary off the penultimate ball of the Innings. On the balcony, England skipper Pietersen immediately rose from his seat and celebrated the win with his team-mates.

England now lead the 7 Match One-Day Series 1-0 with the next match being in Indore.
