A heroic 115
from Kevin Pietersen
nearly saw England
over the line

A 6th wicket stand of 188 between Captain Kevin Pietersen and Samit Patel nearly saw England over the line on a Dry wicket at Cuttack.

England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and elected to field first. England knew that the could not lose the series and a draw was highly unlikely. Indian openers Gambhir and Sehwag came out to the middle with a crowd of approximately 50,000 fans cheering them out into the middle. Unfortunatly for the fans and the Indians themselves that roar was them simultaneously turned into a silence as the second ball of the Innings yielded a wicket. Gambhir played back to a late in-swinger from Broad. Gambhir knew he was gone the moment the ball struck the pads. This brought Suresh Raina to the wicket.

Thats when Sehwag yet again started to lash out. He mainly targeted Anderson as the Short-ball plan was not being effective. Sehwag was increasing the run rate but at the other end, Raina was playing conservatively. Sehwag reached his fifty with a hook over square-leg. Pietersen then turned to Paul Collingwood. He was not taking effect and was smashed for back-to-back boundaries in his 2 overs.

Samit Patel finally broke the 95 run stand. Raina, attempting to go for a slog, was judged lbw as the sweep shot did not yield any runs. Raina departed for a doggid 37(74). This is when Sehwag and Yuvraj dominated the English bowlers. Sehwag continued his attack and smashed Pietersen for 2 consecutive boundaries. However, the following over he attempted a reverse-sweep but was judged lbw off the bowling of Graeme Swann for 72(84).

Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma got together with the score at 143/3 with 21 overs to go. Yuvraj showed signs of his 6 consecutive 6s in the ICC World Twenty20 as he blasted his way to a rapid 50 of just 45 deliveries. Rohit Sharma got to a near runner ball half-century as the partnership reached 100 off just 105 balls.

In the 49th over Kevin Pietersen introduced himself in a gamble which had to pay off for England. It did. Pietersen took the 2 key wickets of Yuvraj 77(77) and Sharma's 50(56), leaving Indian captain MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan to face the last over which yielded 7 runs. Overall, India has put up a positive total of 251/5 in their allotted overs.

England's run chase started off badly as they lost Bell, Prior and Shah in the space of 19 balls due to some fantastic seam bowling yet again from Zaheer and Munaf Patel. Things went from bad to worse as England were reduced to 60/5 in the 14th over with little batting to come. India were right on top.

Thats when Kevin Pietersen and 1st ODI Hero Samit Patel arrived together at the crease. Indian captain MS Dhoni decided to bowl out Zaheer and leave 2 overs for Munaf when needed. Pietersen was judging the pace well and despite the dire situation, the England fans could rely on their captain. At the other end, Samit Patel was finding it increasingly difficult to just get off the mark. It took him a total of 21 deliveries to get off the mark. That increased the pressure on Pietersen.

When Dhoni brought on Harbhajan and Yuvraj, thats when the pressure was released from both Pietersen and Patel. Patel was dealing with the spin well and was smashing the bad deliveries into the gaps for for, whilst Pietersen reached his 50 off 67 balls with a massive six over long-on.

England had now reached 183/3 with Patel (53) and Pietersen (91) in full flow. Could England win it from here. The equation was simple. 68 off 48. Dhoni brought back RP Singh who had bowled quite economically and had hit the right areas. Pietersen smashed all the confidence out of his smashing 10 off 2 balls which resulted in him reaching his 100. He and Patel could win this game out of nowhere. Could England do it?

Thats when Dhoni turned to his prime bowler, Harbhajan but not to bowl spin, to bowl quick, full and straight darts. Any room and it would go straight to the fence. Dhoni knew a couple of boundaries, then the game was gone. Harbhajan's 7th over yielded just 4 runs which brought the equation down to 18 off 12. Munaf Patel along with Zaheer Khan had wrecked havoc in England's middle order. Amazingly, Pietersen and Patel could only get 3 singles off 6 deliveries which meant that England had their backs to the wall going into the final over.

Yuvraj Singh was prepared to bowl the last over. Samit Patel was on strike:
Ball 1: 4 (11 Off 5) Through extra cover, one bounce into the ropes.
Ball 2: 6 (5 Off 4) Straight back over Yuvraj's head and into the side screen. The game is England's.
Ball 3: 0 (5 Off 3) Dhoni is relieved as Yuvraj spears in a full yorker.
Ball 4: 1 (4 Off 2) The game is evenly balanced. Pietersen will face the penultimate ball.
Ball 5: 0 (4 Off 1) Full, wide, outside off-stump. Pietersen is hopeless. England and Pietersen need a boundary off the last ball here.
Ball 6: 1 (India win by 3 Runs) Quick, flicked down the legside, looks as though its going for a boundary, RP Singh puts the dive in at wide Fine-leg and has just won the match for the Indians!

Kevin Pietersen was unbeaten on *115(127) aswell as Samit Patel *81(112). Despite the loss, England had their confidence sky high as they go into the 6th ODI at Guwahati confident for another thriller. Will India bounce back at Guwahati?

Thrilling finish but it was a luck of the draw and India won despite Pietersen and Patel's valiant efforts. Great writing but would have been nicer if you played it yourself. Keep it up.

NIce match....last over thriller. Engalnd have never been so close :P

Great work Arslaan, England were unlucky to lose that. Great presentation as always KUTGW.

Terrorist Attacks shock Mumbai

Cricinfo Staff
November 26th, 2008

Just hours after the conclusion of the thrilling 5th ODI, Mumbai has been sent into a frenzy as vehicles lay openly in the street, black with fire and the metal misshaped.

Early reports suggest that the attacks were conducted by various Mujaheddin groups from various parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The police force in Mumbai have done their level best despite the terrorists wrecking various landmarks like the Taj Mahal.

Shocked crowds gather around a twisted piece of car

However in the Cricketing world, the situation is more serious. ECB Chairman Giles Clarke immediately contacted Moores and Pietersen regarding the situation. They came to a conclusion that England would not take further part in the 2 ODIs remaining but would take part in the 2 Test Matches with the first one in Chennai starting on 11th December.

The attack also affected the Champions Twenty20 League as due to the attacks it had to be rescheduled to later next year. As with the ICL. That progressing World Series had to come to an early conclusion.

England Coach Peter Moores and his men will return to start their 2 Test Matches in 10 days time.

England Arrive in Ahmedabad

England arrive for the second time in Chennai with the situation now classed as "Playable" for the ECB. Kevin Pietersen and his men had to head back to England within 24 hours as bomb blasts in Mumbai threaten to destroy not only this series but it caused an abrupt end to the ICL World Series being played in Chennai.

England captain Kevin Pietersen arrives in Chennai with heavy security
With the situation under control, England have two test matches awaiting them with the first one in Chennai. England last test match was back in August where they lost to South Africa 2-1. With the Ashes just around the corner, Peter Moores' side will be looking for confidence.

Today, the ECB announced the squad to tour India. There have been some suprise inclusions and with above average performances in the Domestic level Kent's Amjad Khan & Yorkshire's young spinner Adil Rashid earn call-upd. In another suprising descision, Lancashire's Sajid Mahmood returns to the England camp for the first time in 18 months.

Well nice to see England back to play some cricket after the horror terror attack in Mumbai. Hoping for an entertaining series...

A couple of surprising selections there. Amjad Khan and Adil Rashid definitely will raise some eyebrows, as will Sajid Mahmood. I would much prefer to see Samit Patel or Graeme Swann than see Rashid shoved in at this age. Also, surely Hoggard has to be ahead of Mahmood for bowlers. And no Ryan Sidebottom or Andrew Strauss?

I think England will struggle to even compete with that sort of squad, but lets wait and see...

First Test Match Pre-Match talk

twelfthmanrr3.jpg

(Credit to Treva)

H.Bhogle: Hello and welcome to "Twelfth Man" where we will be discussing preperations and new news for both teams. I am joined by Sunil Gavaskar, Ian Botham and David Lloyd. Firstly, lets start off with you Sunny. 2 Test matches are quite short, who do you think will win?
S.Gavaskar: Well to be honest with you Harsha I am 75-25 with the majority going to the Indians. The reason for this is because in the Test arena they are on a high after beating Australia despite the loss of Ganguly and Kumble. I could have said 90-10 but England as I and most others will know, they are a good Test outfit. With these youngsters however thats where England will struggle.
I.Botham: Like Sunny said, the England selectors have been generous and granted 2 well 3 players to play first up in Indian conditions and represent their team. Whereas India have plenty of experience and talent with Tendulkar and co to overhaul England.
D.Lloyd: All I am going to say is that England will have to give it all they have got. If they don't they will falter and with the Ashes not far away, they wouldn't want this to happen. I think that the captain Pietersen has got to lead by example.

Pietersen will have to lead from the front

H.Bhogle: Thats right Bumble. Both teams have put all the effort into training. Right well here is the team news.

Team News
Rumours about Matt Prior coming into the Test side have been confirmed as "Untrue" as Tim Ambrose takes his usual spot.
Predicted squads for first test match:
England: 1. Alistair Cook 2. Andrew Strauss 3. Ian Bell 4. Kevin Pietersen (Capt) 5. Paul Collingwood 6. Andrew Flintoff 7. Tim Ambrose (Wk) 8. Stuart Broad 9. Steve Harmison 10. James Anderson 11. Monty Panesar
India: 1. Gautam Gambhir 2. Virender Sehwag 3. Rahul Dravid 4. Sachin Tendulkar 5. VVS Laxman 6. Yuvraj Singh 7. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt/Wk) 8. Harbhajan Singh 9. Zaheer Khan 10. Ishant Sharma 11. Rudra Pratap Singh

H.Bhogle: Well we are nearing the conclusion of today's edition of Twelfth Man. Here is your time and predict. Predict for the following question and the winner will win a fair amount of vCash.
1. Who will win the Test Match?
2. Who will be the leading run-scorer of the series?
3. Who will take the most wickets?
4. Who will win the Man Of The Series award?

And finally, we have come to our edition of "Speak Out". We are trying to get through to Mr. Shubhrayu De via the Phone.

H.Bhogle: Hello
Shubhrayu: Hello
H.Bhogle: Hello Shubhrayu, this is Harsha Bhogle speaking from Twelfth Man.
Shubhrayu: Oh great! How are you?
H.Bhogle: I am fine thanks. The reason we have contacted you is that we need your views on tomorrow's test match.
Shubhrayu: Ok. Well I say that India are the favourites for this series. On the other hand though England cannot be considered as underdogs. Both the teams are sending a young Squad. India are without Sourav Ganguly this time and I think England can take advantage of this altogether. To be fair, Its an Indian victory for me.

H.Bhogle: Ok thank you very much Mr.Shubhrayu for your cooperation. Well that was Mr Shubhrayu De from Pune. Well thats all we have time for on todays edition of Twelfth Man. We will join you again during the Lunch interval. From all of us in the studio, its goodbye.
