A heroic 115
from Kevin Pietersen
nearly saw England
over the line
A 6th wicket stand of 188 between Captain Kevin Pietersen and Samit Patel nearly saw England over the line on a Dry wicket at Cuttack.
England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and elected to field first. England knew that the could not lose the series and a draw was highly unlikely. Indian openers Gambhir and Sehwag came out to the middle with a crowd of approximately 50,000 fans cheering them out into the middle. Unfortunatly for the fans and the Indians themselves that roar was them simultaneously turned into a silence as the second ball of the Innings yielded a wicket. Gambhir played back to a late in-swinger from Broad. Gambhir knew he was gone the moment the ball struck the pads. This brought Suresh Raina to the wicket.
Thats when Sehwag yet again started to lash out. He mainly targeted Anderson as the Short-ball plan was not being effective. Sehwag was increasing the run rate but at the other end, Raina was playing conservatively. Sehwag reached his fifty with a hook over square-leg. Pietersen then turned to Paul Collingwood. He was not taking effect and was smashed for back-to-back boundaries in his 2 overs.
Samit Patel finally broke the 95 run stand. Raina, attempting to go for a slog, was judged lbw as the sweep shot did not yield any runs. Raina departed for a doggid 37(74). This is when Sehwag and Yuvraj dominated the English bowlers. Sehwag continued his attack and smashed Pietersen for 2 consecutive boundaries. However, the following over he attempted a reverse-sweep but was judged lbw off the bowling of Graeme Swann for 72(84).
Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma got together with the score at 143/3 with 21 overs to go. Yuvraj showed signs of his 6 consecutive 6s in the ICC World Twenty20 as he blasted his way to a rapid 50 of just 45 deliveries. Rohit Sharma got to a near runner ball half-century as the partnership reached 100 off just 105 balls.
In the 49th over Kevin Pietersen introduced himself in a gamble which had to pay off for England. It did. Pietersen took the 2 key wickets of Yuvraj 77(77) and Sharma's 50(56), leaving Indian captain MS Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan to face the last over which yielded 7 runs. Overall, India has put up a positive total of 251/5 in their allotted overs.
England's run chase started off badly as they lost Bell, Prior and Shah in the space of 19 balls due to some fantastic seam bowling yet again from Zaheer and Munaf Patel. Things went from bad to worse as England were reduced to 60/5 in the 14th over with little batting to come. India were right on top.
Thats when Kevin Pietersen and 1st ODI Hero Samit Patel arrived together at the crease. Indian captain MS Dhoni decided to bowl out Zaheer and leave 2 overs for Munaf when needed. Pietersen was judging the pace well and despite the dire situation, the England fans could rely on their captain. At the other end, Samit Patel was finding it increasingly difficult to just get off the mark. It took him a total of 21 deliveries to get off the mark. That increased the pressure on Pietersen.
When Dhoni brought on Harbhajan and Yuvraj, thats when the pressure was released from both Pietersen and Patel. Patel was dealing with the spin well and was smashing the bad deliveries into the gaps for for, whilst Pietersen reached his 50 off 67 balls with a massive six over long-on.
England had now reached 183/3 with Patel (53) and Pietersen (91) in full flow. Could England win it from here. The equation was simple. 68 off 48. Dhoni brought back RP Singh who had bowled quite economically and had hit the right areas. Pietersen smashed all the confidence out of his smashing 10 off 2 balls which resulted in him reaching his 100. He and Patel could win this game out of nowhere. Could England do it?
Thats when Dhoni turned to his prime bowler, Harbhajan but not to bowl spin, to bowl quick, full and straight darts. Any room and it would go straight to the fence. Dhoni knew a couple of boundaries, then the game was gone. Harbhajan's 7th over yielded just 4 runs which brought the equation down to 18 off 12. Munaf Patel along with Zaheer Khan had wrecked havoc in England's middle order. Amazingly, Pietersen and Patel could only get 3 singles off 6 deliveries which meant that England had their backs to the wall going into the final over.
Yuvraj Singh was prepared to bowl the last over. Samit Patel was on strike:
Ball 1: 4 (11 Off 5) Through extra cover, one bounce into the ropes.
Ball 2: 6 (5 Off 4) Straight back over Yuvraj's head and into the side screen. The game is England's.
Ball 3: 0 (5 Off 3) Dhoni is relieved as Yuvraj spears in a full yorker.
Ball 4: 1 (4 Off 2) The game is evenly balanced. Pietersen will face the penultimate ball.
Ball 5: 0 (4 Off 1) Full, wide, outside off-stump. Pietersen is hopeless. England and Pietersen need a boundary off the last ball here.
Ball 6: 1 (India win by 3 Runs) Quick, flicked down the legside, looks as though its going for a boundary, RP Singh puts the dive in at wide Fine-leg and has just won the match for the Indians!
Kevin Pietersen was unbeaten on *115(127) aswell as Samit Patel *81(112). Despite the loss, England had their confidence sky high as they go into the 6th ODI at Guwahati confident for another thriller. Will India bounce back at Guwahati?
