David Gower :Welcome back to The 3rd Man's Chat . Ian Botham is on the pitch and is ready for the pitch report.
Ian Botham :Thanks David .Its a warm day and the conditions are perfect for the start of the Ashes. This is a good pitch for the 1st Test of Ashes 2006-07 . Batsmen will be happy after seeing this pitch but there is some moisture on the pitch which will help the fast bowlers as they will get some swing with the new ball. But after 15-20 overs the ball will come nicely ion the bat and then there will be no problems for the batting team . The bowlers will have to keep the ball in the right areas if they want to get wickets or else the batsmen will get on top of the bowlers. There will be less swing for the first 2 days but from the 3rd day spinner will start causing trouble and day 5 will be domindated by spinners. The team winning the toss should bat first and post a big 1st Innings score. Back to you David.
The Pitch Report
David Gower :Ian Botham with the pitch report saying that batsmen will be benifited from this pitch and spinners to cause trouble from the third day . Let's see if its Warne or Panesar. We will take a short break on Third Man's Chat . When we come back will be live for the all important toss with Tony Greig.
Tony Greig : Thank You David......The crowd is in action they are all waiting to get the 1st Test of the Ashes on its way so are the two captains R.Ponting and M.Vaughan. Ricky tosses the coin .....tails is the call from Vaughan and it comes down as heads.....Australia have won the toss and there a huge roar from the crowd .Well Ricky congrajulations on winning the toss whats your decision .
R.Ponting :We will bat first. The pitch is good for batting and bowlers will get help only for the first few overs and then the ball will come on the bat nicely and hopefully we can get a good score on this wicket.
Tony Greig :And what about your team?
R.Ponting :We are going with full strength with Langer and Hayden opening the batting and then the rest as usual as we play in the test matches and Lee, McGrath and Clark are the 3 fast bowlers and Warne in the side as well . Overall a good side for the start of the Ashes .
Tony Greig :And what score are you looking for?
R.Ponting :Well the pitch is good for batting we will try to reach over 450-500 and then try to bowl England out to get a good lead of at least 100 runs and then it will be easy for us to get wickets on the last day as the ball will be spinning and Warne will love it.
Tony Greig : Well Michael lost the toss disappointed with that ?
M.Vaughan :Yeah the pitch is good for batting and now we will have to get early wickets when there is a bit of moisture on the wicket and then it will be difficult to get wickets as the pitch will be batting friendly .
Tony Greig : What about your side ?
M.Vaughan : The best side for us as well. Batting is strong for us as well and we will match the standards of the Australians and in the bowling department S.Broad is not in the playing XI but Monty is there and Giles misses the 1st test as well..
Tony Greig :Well good luck for the match Michael .
M.Vaughan :R.Dravid :Thank You.
