Flintoff, Hoggard Devastate Australia

After a good solid partnership between M.Hayden and M.Clarke Australia were in a commanding position and it was looking as if Australia will get a score over 500 . But things were not going right for Australia after M.Vaughan took the new ball . Flintoff who broke the partnership between M.Clarke and M.Hayden by taking the wicket of Clarke , was just unplayable when he bowled with the new ball . Soon after the fall of wicket of M.Clarke the dangerman Adam Gilchrist came out to the middle . Gilchrist is a devastating test player as he can score quick runs in no time at all. He has already scored over 5000 runs in test matches with a superb average of 48.66.

Gilchrist was very watchful with the first few deliveries but soon he made his intentions clear by scoring 3 boundaries in no time at all . These were danger signs for England as Australia already have a good score on the board and now Gilchrist is smashing them to all parts of the ground and M.Hayden is still there who has scored 150 runs . England need to get a wicket soon or else Australia will score well over 500.

But things started to change and Flintoff was given the new ball and straight away he started troubling Gilchrist with his in swingers . The field was set nicely for Gilchrist and they were waiting for Gilchrist to make a mistake. Then Flintoff bowled a fuller delivery to Gilchrist which he tried to play across the line and missed the ball completely and was struck on the front leg . All the England players went up for the appeal and it didn't took long for umpire S.Bucknor to raise his finger . Australian fans were shocked to see Gilchrist make a long walk back so early in his innings. But Flintoff was on song as he picked up 2 quick wickets of Clarke and Gilly.

Shane Warne was the next batsman for Australia . He has the ability to bat and he can stay at the wicket giving some support from the other end to M.Hayden . Still Australia can reach 500 as Hayden is still there but Flintoff was on song as he picked up his 4th wicket as Shane Warne was caught in the covers playing a loose shot . Infact Shane Warne threw his wicket away as he tried to be on the aggressive side but failed to pickup the slower delivery from Flintoff and checked his shot at the last moment and Hoggard took an easy catch . Warne managed to score just 2 runs and England are back in the match as now they can restrict Australia to a much lower score than expected. Brett Lee joins Hayden in the middle . Brett Lee looked confident right from the first ball . He was picking up singles at regular intervals and gave the strike to Hayden who was getting closer to his 200 . The scoreboard was ticking along nice and that brought a change in the bowling and Hoggard was given the new ball. Australia reached 400 for the loss of 7 wickets and Hayden was playing well on 175 and Brett Lee was giving good support to him . But soon after reaching 400 Australia lost another wicket as Lee was cleaned up by Hoggard with a beautiful out swinging delivery. Lee failed to pick that delivery and saw his stumps shattered .

Hayden was left stranded as wicket were falling quickly from the other end and there was no support for him to score runs . Now with S.Clarke out there in the middle and already 8 wickets down for 404 runs . Hayden decided to go after the bowling . He was successful to hit one down the ground for four but he tried to repeat his shot and this time he went for the big one and he timed that superbly . The ball was smashed hard and it was going for a flat six but Pietersen who was fielding at long-on dived full length to his left and made a superb attempt not only reaching for the catch but also to keep the ball in his hands till the last moment . Pietersen took a superb catch to dismiss Hayden who scored 180 runs . Matthew Hayden acknowledged the standing ovation from the crowd as his terrific knock came to an end . Hayden scored 180 runs in 301 balls with 21 fours and 1 Six.

Glen McGrath was the last man in for Australia but the 1st session of the day belongs to England as they gave ripped through the Australian batting lineup and now they are certainly on top of the match . G.McGrath managed to hit a boundary of his very 1st ball but after couple of dot balls McGrath was caught in the gully by Harmison off the bowling of Hoggard who picks up his 4th wicket as well. Australia were bowled out for 419 runs which was indeed a poor performance as they resumed the day with their score on 328/4 and lost their 6 wickets quickly.

Australia : 419 (107.4 overs)

M.Hayden:c K.Pietersen b M.Hoggard 180 (301) 21 Fours 1 Six
M.Clarke:lbw A.Flintoff 50 (116) 7 Fours

M.Hoggard:28.4-3-99-4
A.Flintoff:31-1-133-4

Fantastic slower ball from Flintoff to get out Warne and carry on England's momentum and rip through the tail, also nice to see KP hold on to one for once in the Ashes. Hoggard and Freddie bowled superbly with the new ball and England should carry this momentum on with their batting!

P.S: Predicta contest winner :D

Hoggard always does well with new ball ( in real life too ;) ) Brilliant fightback from England. But still, Aussies in dominating position! Fabulous innings from Hayden :clap
