David Gower:Hello and welcome to the Group B's match of the Champions Trophy 2006, between South Africa and SriLanka . Both the teams are on the top in the Group B with South Africa at the 2nd spot having won 1 match agaisnt New Zealand while SriLanka are having a dream run having wob all their matches from the qualifying stages.South Africa will have to work very hard today to break this unbeaten run of SriLanka and make their place in the semifinals without any doubt. This is SriLankas last match of the group stages and they are on top of the group with 8 points and have a good net run rate as well. In this tournament SriLanka have scored lots of runs mostly reaching near 300 runs and have the record of the highest total in this tournament.Lets take a look at the match conditions and toss for todays match.

Match Conditions
M.Atherton :The conditions are excellent for batting and the outfield is lightning quick. There will be lots of runs on the board and the bowlers will face a tough time on this pitch.

The Toss
Ian Botham :SriLanka have won the toss and they have elected to bat first . Looks like a wise decision by the SriLankan captain as the pitch is good for batting and also it will help the spinners later on. Now SriLanka will try to score a big total on the board and the two batsmen are ready so are the South African fielder so here we go.

SriLankan Innings

SriLanka are a good confident side and are having a good run in this tournament as they are still unbeatable right from the qualifying stages. SriLankas started their innings confidently as Tharanga and Jayasurya who have given a perfect start to the SriLankan inning each time in this tournament started scoring at a good rate. But South Africans were the opposition and they have world class bowlers with the likes of Pollock and Ntini. Pollock was bowling a good tight line as usual and was troubling the openers. Jayasurya too had loads of experience with him and he initially was watching the ball carefully and was not looking for the big shots. But then as other bowlers came in the attack he started scoring freely and now he was in a mood to smash the bowlers .Again the 1st wicket partnership worth hunderd runs and then Tharanga was dismissed by Nell on 47 runs. Tharanga has a bad habbit of getting the starts and then throwing away the wickets when all the hard work is done. Jayasurya was determined to stay on the wicket and was looking like he will play a big innnings today . He reached his half century and he is the only batsman of this tournament who is in such dangerous form. Sangakkara joined him and scored some important runs before being dismissed by Kallis and then it was the SriLankan captains turn to get the run rate moving on .Jayawardena chipped in with 30 runs while Jayasurya played a good knock of 64 runs with 10 boundaries to his name and the SriLankan score was around 200 while he was dismissed . In the end there needed some good little knocks by the middle order . Atapattu missed out but Dilshan and Maharoof came to the rescue and Vaas played a little cameo in the end and helped SriLanka to reach a total of 290 which was enough on such type of wicket but South Africa also has good batsmen who can make the total look easy with their destructive batting.

Another 50 for Jayasurya

South Arfican Innings
291 was a huge total to chase but on such wicket its chasable also South Africa has some world class batsmen who are experienced and also they have chased 430+ against Australia but here the conditions are hot and they will have to adjust themselves well and spin will come into play as SriLanka has 2-3 spinners who are experienced and they go through theie overs quickly.South Africa started their innings nicely with captain G.Smith right on the money getting 2 quick boundaries and B.Dippenaar was supporting him nicely . But SriLanka had the accuracy of Vaas .Dippenaar was in all sorts of trouble and was frustrated to get off strike off the bowling of Vaas. He gave away too many dot balls and SriLankans were brilliant in their field stopping the singles. Soon Vaas got his reward as G.Smith tried to go for a big shot on the leg side but didnt time it properly and gave a simple catch to Malinga.J.Kallis came in and then there was a partnership growing between Dippenaar and Kallis but Dippenaar was still on the slower side . Kallis was playing nicely before being bowled out by Fernando on 39. Then the dangerous Gibbs who started to up the tempo and scored a quicker rate with some good hitting and was scoring in fours and sixes.Dippenaar scored his 50 in 100 balls which was slowest of this tournament but then he was trapped by Murali for 56. Gibbs was still there but wickets kept falling from the other end and the required rate was increasing as every ball was bowled.Gibbs was trying out everything trying to hit every ball but eventually South Africa fell well short of the target and finished their 50 overs with 251/7.SriLanka are still celebrating their unbeaten run in this tournament as they won this match by 39 runs.

Man Of The Match
Man Of The Match was hard to pick as everyone scored in the same range and there was no outstanding bowling performance but it had to go to someone. So we decided that the Man Of The Match was Sanath Jayasurya for his half century and also bowlingtightly in the depth,he was wicketless but he was not giving away too many runs either.

Result
SriLanka win by 39 runs

NewZealand v Pakistan , Live from Chandigarh

davidgower4hm.jpg
David Gower:Hello and welcome to the another Group B's match of the Champions Trophy 2006, between NewZealand and Pakistan . Its a do or die situation for NewZealand as they have lost their previous two matches of the group stages and this is their last opportunity and a win for them is a must if they want to start in the tournament. Pakistan on the other hand have just played a single match win which they faced defeat against the SriLankans . While SriLanka have qualified for the semifinals having won the all their matches in the group stages its a fight for the 2nd place in the group between Pakistan,South Africa and NewZealand. If South Africa win their next match then they go through for the semifinals. So today its all important for oth the teams to register a win in this tournament and all the pressure is on NewZealand as this is their last opportunity .Lets take a look at the match conditions and toss for todays match.

Match Conditions
M.Atherton :Well as everyone know that this Mohali pitches are nightmare for batsmen. This track has bounce, pace and most important of all the swing with which the batsmen face a tough task out there in the middle . The team winning the toss will bowl first and will like to rip through the batting order of the opposition.

The Toss
Ian Botham :NewZealand have won the toss thats a good news for NewZealand fans and now they can command right from the start with Bond who is not in the best of forms can change things around here. Pakistan need someone to play a big knock .

Pakistan Innings

Pakistan made a good solid start to their innings with some good batting by M.Hafeez and I.Farhat. The ball was swinging a lot and Bond was slightly of the line but this young batsmen were playing their shots and were missing more than they played but their inexperience was showing on and luck was with them as they didnt snicked and ball. Pakistan started their innings slowly as runs were hard to comeby and conditions were difficult to bat on . But Imraf Farhat smashed Shane Bond for a huge straight six and they confidence was growing up in the opening batsmen. Imraf Farhat played a good knock of 40 runs with 3 boundaries before being bowled out by J.Oram. Soon M.Hafeez got his half century and it was an important one as every run is vital on such type of wickets. Pakistan has a strong middle order but then N.Astle came and started causing troubles to the batsmen . The middle order didnt manage to score much after a goos start from the openers. Astle picked up 3 qucik wickets including the vital one of Hafeez for 56.Pakistan were going along with a good run rate but in the end the swing bowlers Styris ,Astle and Mills bowled tightly and Pakistan were bowled out for 203 in 38.1 overs. The total was defendable but Pakistan wasted 12 overs and the toal would have been even more . Bond was wicketless which NewZealand dodnt expect. Pakistan will have to bowl well if they want to save this match.

NewZealand Innings
NewZealand needed just 204 runs to win in their alloted 50 overs but the conditions were bowler friendly and to add to that Pakistani bowlers are great exponent of swing bowling . NewZealand got to a worst start ever as L.Vincent was bowled in the 1st over by Rana Naved-Ul-Hasan . That was the worst ever start which NewZealand expected and now we have a game on . It didnt take too long for Naved-Ul-Hasan to pick his 2nd wicket as Stris surived just 3 balls before givng away an easy catch to Umar Gul . Naved-Ul-Hasan was on fire and now Pakistan are in the drivers seat. Pakistan have won so many matches with their wonderful fast bowling are we on for something special here.NewZealand then got a partnership going between Fleming and Astle . Both the batsmen have experience with them and have so many partnerships which have won matches for NewZealand. At one stage it looked like NewZealand are running away with victory but the Iftikar Anjum got the vital wicket of Astle and the Marshal Twins didnt last for long either. S.Fleming was still there playing a captain knock and he was fighting for the teams victory but there was no support from the other end. Things were looking way too difficult for NewZealand as wickets were falling and the required run rate was increasing all the time. Pakistan finally managed to bowl NewZealand out as Fleming was the last man to be dismissed by S.Malik. Pakistan won by 28 runs registerning their 1st victory in this series while NewZealand are eliminated from this tournament having lost all the 3 matches of the group stages.

My Favourite Kiwis are gone :crying Track good for pace but Kiwis have only two specialist pace bowlers Bond and Mills... wheres Franklin? Oram and Styris though can support but a specialist bowler like Franklin is needed! I wud have preferred Franklin over J.Marshall if i had been the coach ;)

Also wrong place for Styris to come as no3 over Astle in these situations... Kiwis committed suicide in other words! Anyways tough luck for Kiwis and gud Luck for India in next match against Windies!

NewZealand decided to pick 1 extra batsman instead of J.Franklin and they thought that Syris and Astle will be used as the 5 bowlers. Everything was going nicely for them Astle and Styris did their job picking up 5 wickets between them so Franklin's job was done but Bond went for runs and Pakistan were bowling well thats where they lost . NewZealand need a good coach to be honest like suren.

wow the pakistani's batted poorly but did well to get nz out for that few runs
