Good win for Pakistan. Group B has been the exact opposite of the actual thing where NZ and SA played well and qualified.

If similar things happens with Group A then India and England will qualify . India are the favourites to qualify comforably but if England and Australia win their next matches then it will go down to the net run rate.

Btw the Group tables with the net run rate will be posted soon .

That was an awesome spell of bowling from Razzaq. Pity Pakistan went off too early as they wasted 6 overs.

ICC Champions Trophy 2006- Points Table

Points System

* Win- 4
* No Result/Tie - 2
* Loss - 0

* Two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals depending on the highest points.

* In the event of teams finishing on equal points, the right to play in the semifinal will be given to the team with the highest net run rate* (NRR explained)

(*in a match declared as no result, run rate is not applicable )

Points Table

pointstablecopymc9.jpg

In Group A, there is a huge turnaround as India take on the 1st position by winning both their 2 mathces and England and Australia won 1 match each having 4 points with them but England take the 2nd spot as their net run rate is higher than Australia. Still two matches left in Group A i.e. England V West Indies and India V Australia. If West Indies win their next match and Aussies lose against India then Group A will be interesting as the 2nd spot will be decided on the Net Run Rate .But if England and Australia win their next match then there will be a tie at the 1st place between India , England and Australia so Net Run Rate will play a huge role in this group.

In Group B, SriLanka retained their top position by winning all 3 matches with a comprehensive Net Run Rate while Pakistan came from nowhere and managed to win twice and placing themselves at the 2nd position . SriLanka and Pakistan have qualified for the semifinals as SriLanka the 1st semifinalist and Pakistan the 2nd semifinalist of Group B. South Africa were unlucky having missed out after a good start to the series while NewZealand are having a poor run and were totally disappointing in this tournament. Semifinals fixtures will be decided after the remaining two matches of Group A.

One thing to be noticed is that mostly teams from the sub-continent(India-SriLanka-Pakistan) are leading in their respective groups

England v West Indies, Live from Ahmedabad

David Gower: Hello and welcome all our viewers around the world to The Third Man's Chat . Today we are here for the 2nd last match of Group A between England and West Indies certainly must win situation for both the teams to stay in the tournament. Well if we see at the group table which was posted in the above update India and England are on top on Group A but Australia had a poor NRR than England so they were pushed down at number 3 so England will have to capitalise on this and win this one and get the NRR even higher so that Aussies wont get any chance to comeback even after they win.West Indies on the other hand are yet to register a win here so tough times for them even after playing well they are facing diffculties to win in the group stages. Michael Holding and Nasser Hussain are there in the studio with me . Well Michael a big one today for England and certainly a pressure match as well so what do u think about todays match.

holding2iy.jpg
M.Holding: Yeah certainly pressure will be on both the teams . England are ahead in the group tables and if they win here then they are in comfort zone and Australia will have to produce some extraordinaty performance to get back in the top two place . West Indies on the other hand are playing well infact but they are not getting the victory . They batted well against the Aussies scoring 284 but they bowled badly while agaisnt India they just collapsed even after getting good start . West Indies has the problem of collapsing under pressure situations. West Indies will have to forget all those things and should concentrate on todays match and hope for a win.

hussain6nb.jpg
N.Hussain:Yeah England will have the confidence before going in the match as they won against the Aussies in their last match which was a big confidence booster for them as its difficult to win against the Aussies but they made it comfortably in the end and the end result was that Australia dropped down on the NRR and thats good for England.

David Gower: Thank You Gentlemen .We will take u straight away to the Extra Innings studio with beautiful and gorgeous Mandira Bedi along with the cricketing expert with his inimitable humorous style and good cricketing knowledge Navjot Singh Sidhu and also the king of the experts Geoffrey Boycott .

Mandira Bedi : Thank You David . Welcome to Extra Innings where you are going to enjoy in-depth analysis of the Champions Trophy with all the action and excitement with expert analysis for out great cricketing expert Navjot Singh Sidhu and also one of the greatest player of England Geoffrey Boycott . Today we are here for the 2nd last match of the group stages between England and West Indies. Well Navjot what do you think which team is likely to win todays match .

sidhuau0.jpg
N.Sidhu :Certainly England are the favourites to win this match no doubts about that one. They won the last match against the Aussies which is a big win for them as winning against the Aussies is not like playing games on paper. It needs good captaincy and also good thinking hile batting and you have to give your 100% in every ball you ball. They did that in the last match and they will have to do that again and seal their place in the semifinals. Well Geoffrey what do u think will your side win today ?

boycsxs9.jpg
G.Boycott:Well West Indies are going through an unlucy phase from the last 3 games. they played well against the Bangladesh and Zimbabwe but dont forget they are just the minnows . Infact if you cant refresh your memory you will remember that Bangladesh once were going to defeat West Indies in the qualifying round and losing by just 5 runs . So West Indies have not shown some extra ordinary run in this Champions Trophy als they lost 3 matches in a row . 1st was against SriLankan in the qualifying round and then against Australia and India in the group stages so their confidence will be low and its a good opportunity for England to capitalize on this .One bad news for England is that S.Mahmood is unfit having a side strain and there is a possibility that L.Plunkett will comeback in the side.

mandirahs5.jpg
Mandira Bedi :Ian Botham is ready with the pitch report so lets take you live down on the pitch with Ian Botham.

Ian Botham: Thanks Mandira .Well there is not much crowd in here but there are number of Indian fans whom i had a chat in the morning and i asked them which team are they supporting and they said England and they said that they want to see Pietersen bat . So Pietersen is quite popular in India and they want to see the fireworks from him. Well on the pitch report its wonderful for batting . It will be a run scoring game and the ball will come nicely on the bat. the pitch is hard and not lots of crack so is a batting paradise . Bowlers will have to work hard to get wickets and soem lose bowling will get some trashing for sure. Team winning the toss might decide to bat first but it really will not matter as batting 2nd time on this wicket will remain same. So it will be a run feast and all the best for both the teams .

mandirahs5.jpg
Mandira Bedi :Ian Botham with the pitch report well Navjot what do you think what how crucial will be toss going to be.

sidhuau0.jpg
N.Sidhu :As Ian said batting is easy on this wicket and if the captain wins and decides to bowl first and if the opposition pile on the runs then that will put pressure so according to me better lose the toss.:p and try to bowl well in the start.

mandirahs5.jpg
Mandira Bedi :Thanks Navjot . We will take a short break here on Extra Innings when we come back we will take you live for the toss with the two captains and M.Atherton........Stay Tuned :)
