West Indies are in a commanding position in the match and are well ahead of the required run rate . Chris Gayle and Brian Lara have shown some wonderful display of good aggressive batting also showed good mind while playing the shots. Both Gayle and Lara reached their half centuries in quicktime and certainly England were on the backfoot even when they had a good score on the board. England will have to pick up quick wickets if they want to comeback in the match and that should be done by picking up atleast 2-3 wickets in few overs .
Chris Gayle was playing wonderfully well and was on 47 runs . He chipped one over the infield and was successful to get a couple of runs but he was a bit frustrated as he had to wait for four balls to get that one important run to reach his half century . Gayle scored his 50 in 51 balls with 9 boundaries . This has been a destructive innings by Gayle and West Indies needed such inning from him and now they are in a good position in this match and if he stay till 40 overs the match will be well out of England's reach.
Gayle scores Half-Century
L.Plunkett was introduced as a chance in the bowling after Lewis and Harmison were going away for runs and Flintoff was trying to keep the runs down from the other end. England would have thought that a change in bowler might just slow down the run rate but it turned out the other way. This is how L.Plunkett bowled his 1st over and Brian Lara was on strike. 1st Ball:Plunkett bowled a loose ball and was slightly over pitched but Lara made full use of the opportunity and played a lovely straight drive and it resulted in a boundary. 2nd Ball:Plunkett this time bowled a good length delivery but it was slightly wide of offstump and lara got enough room to smash the ball through the offside for another boundary. 3rd Ball:Plunkett was under pressure as he went for 2 fours in 2 balls. He came back and overpitched again and got the treatment as Lara smashed it for four and it made 3 back to back boundaries. 4th Ball:Plunkett then bowled a shot ball and Lara played that one off the backfoot on the legside and managed to pickup 3 runs and brought up his 50 ,and then Gayle gave away two dot balls.
Plunkett went for 15 runs in his 1st over.
Plunkett went for 15 runs in 1st over as Lara scores 50
West Indies were scoring at a good rate and England were under pressure as wickets were not falling for them . So Harmison was introduced back in the attack and he was there to pick up wickets. But Gayle and Lara were not going to spare him as they already started to hit him for runs. Harmison bowled a short ball to Lara and Lara went for the square cut but the ball went staright in the hands of Monty. It wasn;t a good shot as the ball was rising and there was no room to play the square cut. Lara missed out on his century but he did all the damage as he departs for 79 in 64 balls with 10 fours and 1 six.
Lara departs finally
But even after dismissing Lara there was no way that Gayle would stop . He continued his assault after the bowlers and this time it was Plunkett again whom Gayle targeted . When he overpitched Gayle use to smash him straight down the ground and when he bowled short he smashed him over fineleg for six. Gayle is still in aggressive mood and the only way to stop him is to take his wicket. He is on 99 now and is waiting for his century to complete and one really wonder what will he do after his century . Will he go with the attacking more or will he play calmly and stay till the end and help West Indies win this one.England are virtually out of this match but we cant say as the game is never won until the last ball is bowled.
