England's tour of India - 2021

Wasn't the idea floated to give the away side the choice doing away with the toss and making home nations think more about the pitch?

The issue with that would be the home side making pitches as 'neutral' and batting friendly as possible and resulting in more boring games. Still think it's a better solution to the current situstion.

What a victory. All the bowlers contributed and the performance with the bat in the first innings set the tone. It will be interesting to see what changes are made to the side for the 2nd test.

Foakes will come in for Buttler and I would imagine before the test it would've been agreed that Broad would play the second test but after Jimmy's wonder spell who knows.

There's no way Anderson plays another game in Chennai. Keeping him fresh for the day and night test could be the difference between securing at least a draw and possibly another historic series victory.

Well played England! Deserved to win the test match.

Toss does matter but India had their moments on Day 3 to get closer to England's first innings total but a combination of good bowling & few soft dismissal made sure England were ahead for the majority of the match.

India also ran into an Incredibly inform Joe Root who is looking like will score around 600-700 runs in this series with that kind of form.

England are looking favorites IMO now if they bat again at the same venue.

India maybe need to bring in Kuldeep or Axar if he is fit enough to play or maybe someone who can reverse swing (Siraj or Shardul).

I wouldn't want to be the one who tells him he's being rested.

Outplayed by England in all the 3 departments. Thoroughly deserved.

Yes, toss played a role but India have themselves to blame too with their performance on the 3rd day when the pitch was still good to bat on.

Our tail is a big, big problem. The opposition know that once the 6th wicket falls, it's only a matter of 10-12 overs/10-20 runs before the innings wraps up.

It's obvious that Nadeem will be dropped, but I don't particularly feel good about Kuldeep too. Bumrah and Ishant did whatever they could with the ball. Ashwin was good. Washington's batting is an asset. So the only open spot left is of Nadeem, although Rohit will need to do something special soon to keep this spot. His time is running out. As a senior player and an opener, you ought to expect more from him.

Well played England. A comprehensive victory. Has Jimmy bowled a better spell in his distinguished career. Cracked India wide open.

England can thank their lucky stars they won the toss as the first two days provided the best batting conditions and they took full advantage. Moderate bowling by India allowed Joe Root to do as he pleased as his team piled on first innings runs.
BCCI will think twice about retaining Nadeem as he needed to give Ashwin far better support. Not sure why "George" Washington was not given a bowl in the second innings.

Jadeja should slot back in comfortably. The problem, however, is replacing him for a series against one of the other best teams in the world.

I think things would get a little more difficult for England now with this victory. India have always found ways to get back in the series when playing at home. England just need to decode this side furthermore if they are to dominate the Indians. India should just scrap the idea of playing 3 spinners on a surface like this. Chennai pitch have always favoured batting in the last decade or so in early days of a Test match. I think this was only the 4th match at Chennai since 2008 India tour of England, but all these matches are batsmen dominated. They should rather have 3 pacers who can use the bounce of this pitch in the early days to force wickets. Just 2 spinners alone are enough to trouble any side in last 2 days.

I am not really surprised that Root have managed to score massively against the Indians. He is as good a nemeses as Alastair Cook or a Jacques Kallis was or a Steve Smith is. He has a 50 on debut and managed 4 centuries in 5 matches the last 2 series that he played against the Indians in India. He would keep piling on those runs whatsoever the Indian bowling does.

Jarrod Kimber with some interesting insights.
Really good read. Jarrod Kimber deserves more fame tbh. And cricket is a game of small margins, that's what makes this even better. As Steve Smith says lack of runs doesn't mean lack of form

Definitely. And the reverse is also true - Jason Roy scored a pile of runs against us at Lord's but it only served to show how unprepared he was to be a Test batsman

It's good for cricket that Silverwood has replaced Trevor Bayliss
