Your Cricket Fast Bowling Thread

I aim my bouncers for the helmet; I don't get hooked too often. It might sound nasty but it's my job.

Yeah, Cricket isnt a nice game, although many friendships can be made around the world playing it. A team goes out to beat the other one, and if it takes someone getting concused like one of the Australian openers in South Africa (Was it Hayden or Langer, not sure ?) then so be it. It isnt in hate, although with Nel of SA it could very well be in hate.

Anyways, as a fast bowler, which is more important, Stamina or Concentration?

Great Thread!

EF, great tips there mate, I say im alot like you in the way I play, opening bowler and genuine no 11! :p I'm around 5 ft 11 and bowl around 72/3's usually, although people said this season i'd put on about 10 mph of pace in a season, so hopefully it'll continue! I play in a league where Profesionals are employed like Gunarathna, Test cricketer Hassantha Fernando - who i have had dropped at keeper and first slip in consecutive balls :(, Steve Tikolo and Justin Ontong also played in the league this season, so it's very challenging and fun at the same time!

Hard to choose. You can have all the stamina you like but if you can't concentrate on bowling a good line then you aren't going to get very far. Similarlily, if you can concentrate on bowling a good line and length yet you don't have enough stamina to bowl 2 overs on the bounce, then your equally buggered.

How can you say Everton supporters have sense :p

They sit in Goodison park to watch one good game a year, although it was the thrashing of Liverpool :p

You don't even like football.

Generaly more accuracy > less pace > easier on your stamina. I think stamina only comes into it when you bowl as fast as possible.

Thats my motto, dont bowl to fast, dont get tired :D love it

And Matt, im coming around to the thought of watching highlights of Soccer ;)

How you control your aggression is another important factor in a fast bowler too. Too much and you can lose discipline and get carted around the park. Too little and you may be a soft touch.

I'm an Everton fan too :p

I think I'm a soft touch. Not aggressive, just like to pitch it up and frustrate them. Hence the outswing and no bouncers/yorkers. That, and I'll probably kill one of the kids I bowl too with them (Or the keeper for that matter...). And I can't do it to the sir, he doesn't wear a helmet...

I never shut my mouth when bowling and I find it helps. If the batsmen is too busy concentarting on arguing with my petty sledges to him, then it means he isn't completley focused on his job. He may also try to hit me out of St.Helens which may get him out.

how can you not sledge far out? when i do my sexy little offies of 5 paces boy do i get in the batsmans face, its all about itimadation (sp?). You piss him off he misses you hit.
Cricket is more of a mind game than anything

Also, remember to work on the ball. So many times I get the ball return to me at the top of my runup, and the shiny side is not shiny, but just damp. When you shine the ball, don't just lick your fingers and rub the ball. It's okay to do that to smoothen the rough patches, but you still need to work the ball. I find the best way to do it is to rub it on my thigh. It's not just a leasurly rub either. Apply a lot of force to it. Press down really hard and do it really fast. If you do it correctly you get a really good shine, and the shiny side should be warm when you touch it. Having a good ball to work with helps out a pace bowler enormously.

Does anyone know the proper grip to swing the ball? I used to be able to, but now I've gone from swinging the ball to usually seaming/cutting the ball quite a bit. Still, I would like to be able to swing the ball again :p

Btw, I'm a batting allrounder, so maybe I should focus alot more on batting, and I haven't got the height most associate with pace bowlers :D

Yeah I went through the same problem for part of a season, not helped by the fact work stopped me from doing any practice. But you may also have to consider the position of your wrist at the point of delivery, which was the problem I had.
