Very interesting article. It's interesting to see how far football has come on from 2 years ago and what has happened to the strikers. Arguably the most important aspect of football is the control and use of space. At the World Cup, those who shon were the likes of Villa, Forlan and Sneijder (I thought Sneijder was average but the stats disagree). It's no coincidence that these all played where the space was. Sneijder played "between the lines", whereas Forlan dropped deeper so he had more time and space on the ball to pick out passes and go for brilliant strikes. Villa started wide (if you look at a 4-2-3-1 formation, where is the most space? out wide) and cut inside towards goal. The attackers need to find and use space. The 4-6-0 is pretty much about this. One player will drop deep, others will run into that space.

Man Utd's fluid interchanging was a joy to watch. That was some of the best football I've seen.
 
I think Berbatov is the ideal player to play the 0, too.

A great first touch, play as a target man dropping deep, turning and with an eye for a pass for the runners. It could see the re-emergence of the target man at the top level.

We were reduced to the 4-6-0 the other year, with neither fellaini or cahill up front or in midfield due to all strikers at the club being injured and went on a good little run.
 
Yeah he could play a similar role to Robin van Persie at Arsenal and Holland. He drops deep and brings others into play by creating space and drawing defenders out.

Yesterday Guti and today Raul. Always knew it was going to happen one day, but still feel sad.

Raul was pretty much why I started supporting Real and Spain. I hope he scores more goals for Schalke in the Champions League and increases his tally in that competition.
 
Where does Mascherano fit at Barca if he goes?

Cesc is better and would probably fit but Javier nah he will go to Inter I reckon :D
 
I had to laugh at these people writing in to Sky Text saying that Man Utd used to sign as many people as Man City did. Umm...that is just not true. I often remember checking the transfer news and being frustrated that Sir Alex wasn't signing anyone! Man City are signing people left, right and centre - Utd never did that. It was usually one main signing, accompanied by various smaller ones. This transfer market window feels like most of them - only this time we know why - we ain't got any bloody money!!

Also, some of Sir Alex's signings were unbelievable bargains, which is more than can be said for City. Cantona, Schmeichel, Solskjaer, Ronny Johnsen anyone? And then there were the youngsters he bought through - Beckham, Scholes, the Nevilles, Wes Brown and Nicky Butt all in one season, plus of couse Ryan Giggs a few years earlier. And of course to top it off, all Man Utd's signings were off money that we generated ourselves - unlike City and to a lesser extent, Chelsea, we didn't need a Sugar Daddy to get somewhere. Not that City have got anywhere yet of course. ;)
 
Diego Forlan will be Torres's likely replacement should El Nino leave Liverpool
A profitable deal for Liverpool as City will splash their 50 mil cash on torres and we might get a player who does not get injured often like torres ;)

Well by the time it is common - let alone by the time it could dominate Drogba will have retired, or at least not be playing at the top level.

Just like how wingers have changed, the striker will too. I'd say drogba could play the zero role anyway. He is technically gifted enough. But there would still be a place for the powerhouse striker. Not all teams play the same way, all teams require some sort of plan b, too.

Yep, i also think it'd be interesting to see the old 2-3-5 and even more attacking formations from the early years. In the first international England played with something like 8 strikers, yet the game finished 0-0.
 
So, according to Mr Gill, Sir Alex has money to spend. I don't believe a word of it - if we have money, then sodding well sign someone, Sir Alex! Manamecca City don't seem to be having trouble finding people to sign. Also, according to rumours, Balotelli will turn down Man Utd (and a bigger paypacket) to join City. Idiot. City is an experiment - Man Utd are the real deal. :sarcasm
