Four catches dropped by AI at mid-off

I might be doing something wrong because I haven't had the game for long, but with the fielding set to semi-auto (or whatever it's called, the middle setting) four sitters in one innings were dropped by the fielder at mid-off. No running or diving involved, the ball was just served up to him. What input must the player make, if any, to increase the chances of a catch being taken? I didn't have to move the fielder because the ball came to him. Am I supposed to press down on the right stick as the ball approached the fielder, or something like that? Many thanks and, once again, apologies for the rookie question.

Move the right stick towards the ball - probably up in this case (where it's straight down his throat)

Right, thank you. That's what it says in the manual. The problem is that the catch gets dropped before the camera moves to the fielder so that I can see him and move him towards the ball.

Just hold the right stick in the direction of the shot, the catch should be completed...
