World Cup Group B - Pool Matches Discussion Thread

Mohammad Naveed has bowled brilliantly. Great opening spell and now some reverse swing.

What an incredible finish to the game. A perfect straight drive is always better than a 360 or heli shot and even better if come to find winning runs, same as that.:)

One has to credit Dav Whatmore for this Zumbo performance ; the temperament Williams & Ervine have shown was outstanding.

The way these associates are playing, both West Indies and Pakistan may crash in the first round. Although India showed great temperament and resilience against Pakistan but their next couple of matches will give the exact indication to where they will end up in this tournament.

There is still plenty of time left in the tournament, but it is a possibility. Which is why the next group B game - Pak vs WI - will be critical. Both teams will want to grab a win on this one. And a big win too, to get a healthy NRR

Anyways looking at the World Cup fixtures table, it seems like India would not be best served if they top Group B. That's because the topper of Group B plays the 4th quarterfinal in Wellington. India would not have played many matches in New Zealand by the time of the WF. And if England are A4, then India would face England at Wellington if India are B1 and England are A4.

India would want to target the second spot in Group B so that they get the Adelaide quarterfinal. That puts Virat Kohli in prime spot because Adelaide is his favorite ground and also the ground where India registered such a comprehensive win vs Pakistan. And if Sri Lanka are A3, then it would be an India vs Sri Lanka QF at Adelaide. An India vs Australia QF at Melbourne cannot be ruled out too. If India are B3 and Australia become A2, then India would face Australia at Melbourne. And that's a game India would dread. If we have to face Australia, it has to be as late as possible. As per the Dhoni ideology, push it to as late as you can. :D Hoping for an Adelaide QF for India.

Oh don't worry. Pakistan has this issue only against India. I am fully expecting them to bounce back against other teams, because other teams "are not India". :p Pakistan has this block only against India and that too in WC's.

I think commenting on the outcome of the group standings at the end of this month would be the right time to do so. India did well in their first game and that is bound to boost their confidence; although this Pakistani team is nowhere as strong as its previous counterparts. I see Ireland making a strong case for themselves, especially after their performances in Australia so far. Remember that they won the warm-up against BD convincingly. I do hope that the ICC takes up their case very seriously as the 11th Test nation.

If I am not mistaken, the only QF is NZL is at Wellington. In such a case should the host nation qualify for the same, they are eligible to choose their venue. If India reaches the QF, they will be dependant upon what Australia choose as their venue. Back in 2011, this is exactly what happened with India and SRL (both played the QFs at home). In case both hosts reach the semis, the team ranked higher (group) gets the chance to decide the venue at which the match would be played.

Yes I was doing something similar yesterday and the end result was that "if" Pakistan qualified in the next round it will most probably be as No#3 from this pool and again most probably they'll meet NZ in quarterfinal. Although history show we are pretty good against NZ specially in knockout stages but I don't think we'll move further keeping in mind the form NZ are in.

Also its highly unlikely for India and Pakistan to meet in Semifinals unless we both qualify as #1 and #2 from this pool and win our quarterfinal matches too (sorry for daydreaming :D)

Luden stays as Pakistan fielding coach | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

ESPNcricinfo understands Luden was unhappy with the attitude of some players during drills. The players had also appeared upset and were seen exchanging harsh words with the coach, apparently questioning his lack of a high-profile record as a player.

Not the kind of news you want to hear during the team's World Cup campaign

Yeah it really was a nice shot from Williams and didn't he play well. Zimbabwe still need to improve their death bowling though, too many runs being conceded.

Oh yeah.... I completely sidestepped the issue where if NZ and India end up clashing in the QF, then New Zealand will pick Wellington for that clash (irrespective of where both teams stand in the group stages). I feel that avoiding a quarterfinal in NZ conditions will probably help India. The best quarterfinal scenario for India would be playing the one in Adelaide. I have a feeling that Australia might choose either Melbourne or Sydney (more so if they get the hint that they might play against a subcontinental nation in the semis). They would probably want to avoid Adelaide if they face a subcontinental team.

Anyways back to current scenarios, a victory against SA would definitely help in boosting India's confidence further. Beating one of the serious WC contenders against whom we have never won a WC match (the record is 3-0 in SA's favor) should boost our confidence big time. Hope we are up for it.
