Just came back from "Kai Po Che". First things first, the movie is HUGELY ENTERTAINING!! A superbly executed film and it gave the satisfaction of having watched a well executed masala film. The film had humor, tension, drama, romance, etc in good amounts and the dialogues were excellent and the performances of the lead actors were EXTRAORDINARY! The music by Amit Trivedi is excellent too, with lot of tinges of AR Rahman in the score but not lifted/inspired; just tinges.
But an issue that might pull the movie down is its storyline. The story reminds you of so so many yesteryear films that I lost count. It reminds us of Rang Be Basanti, Lagaan, Iqbal, Bombay, 3 Idiots, etc (and a Malayalam/Tamil film too, "Friends").... Chetan Bhagat took a lot of inspiration in his writing and its evident. The movie didn't feel as fresh as 3 Idiots did. I didn't read the novel (I am bad at reading books!) but this film compared to 3 Idiots felt less fresh/original. Its a different kind of a Manmohan Desai type masala film, for the generation of today. Also the director of this film, Abhishek Kapoor, did "Rock On" which was another movie on male bonding. Its probably co-incidence (or is it?) that Bhagat and Abhishek got together for this film.
But definitely worth watching (probably a few times) for the excellent execution, the dialogues and the performaces. Especially the three actors are nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY! I loved Sushant Singh Rajput, but the guy who acted as Omi (Amit Sadh) was probably the show stealer. He has very heavy traces of Salman Khan in his younger days, but a far better actor than Salman of those younger days. Rajkumar Yadav (the other actor) has a brilliant role too, and he does it with aplomb.
Don't go expecting path breaking cinema. Its a fun, feel good film with enough drama and entertainment to keep you glued! 3.8/5
