Hindi Cinema Discussion

Watched half of Cocktail (on TV), so crap. It is so slow moving. But Deepika looked hot so that was good, and the music was good though.

Saw two absolutely brilliant films in the last 2 days.

Special 26- Brilliant acting by Anupam Kher and Akshay Kumar. Great sense of comic timing in a quasi-serious edge-of-your-seats thriller. I thought the movie was paced brilliantly and built up towards a spectacular climax. The movie's biggest strength is that it is believable. At no point was my fear realized that this would evolve into your run-of-the-mill Bollywood movie. Jimmy Shergill's character was annoying as he only had one line that he repeated ad nauseum ("Janab"). The actress also served no purpose. The love story was highly unnecessary and it brought with it some horrific songs. The songs never served any purpose, were too long, and weren't of enough quality to warrant such length or even their existence. I thought the final scene showing Anupam Kher and Akshay Kumar wasn't necessary. The movie should have ended with the Manoj Bajpai scene because
the Sharjah scene probably means there will be a sequel which I fear/feel will not/cannot live up to this movie.
Kai Po Che- It was hard to believe that the three main actors were so inexperienced as they seemed like veterans of the film industry, performing their roles perfectly. However, beyond their individual performances, they acted well together in a believable, realistic, and endearing friendship. The antagonist, the politician, was also a standout character as he was portrayed as a villain in a different manner than Bollywood audiences have come to expect. There were no outlandish dialogues, just a few lines and eye-contact here in a gradual build-up to an exciting end. I thought all the subplots were well managed and brought together superbly into a single story, rather than a series of independent tales. This can often be difficult to do when books are adapted to the big-screen, but this is the movie's biggest and most successful achievement. No songs either which was great as there was no room for any in this movie. The cricketing analysis was a little underwhelming as really anyone who has watched even a single match could tell Ali that he needed to learn how to play on the off-side, but that's just nitpicking by an overenthusiastic cricket fan.

Agree on both these reviews. I too thought the movie should have ended at that Manoj Bajpai sequence (in the end). But if Neeraj Pandey is the guy who directs a sequel to Special 26, who knows? the sequel might live up to the original too.

Did you think that Omi guy in 'Kai Po Che' looks like Salman of the younger days?

Saw Rowdy Rathore. Not sure if it's only poor direction or Sonakshi really can't act.

I'd agree to everything before this. Its not necassary to be pretty or in good shape to be a good actor.

Yes but it came as a bit of shock when someone told me that she is very pretty. I might have missed a couple of heart beats there.

Well loved Special 26. Waiting to see Attacks of 26/11

Its not necessary ofcourse. But seeing her acting skills,I was just looking for any other reason why she was so hyped.I couldn't find any.

Happened to me too.A friend of mine thinks she is very pretty.

I was just thinking about this. Who do you guys think is currently the best actress in bollywood? (Acting wise)

I think people have overhyped Kareena Kapoor. The only movie in which I liked her acting was in Jab we met but apart from that, I think she is average. Again, this is just my opinion and you can have your say.

Kareena Kapoor, Vidya Balan, and Rani Mukherjee probably. Once she does a few more films, probably Anushka Sharma also.

I don't understand how Kareena and acting can be taken in the same breath. She seems to look like an actress because she takes up more meatier roles these days. But she is a very average/mediocre actress who spoils good roles due to her wooden expressions. For example that scene in 3 Idiots where she emotionally talks to her father about her brother's suicide, she ruins that scene so badly.

Priyanka Chopra is the best actress in Indian cinema right now, PERIOD! She can fit into an Agneepath/Krrish/Don as easily as she fits into a Barfi/Fashion. Next would be Vidya Balan, who can do the heavyweight roles pretty superbly. I thought Priyanka should have won the Filmfare for Barfi though. Wonder how Vidya took it for Kahaani. But, these two right now are the top. Anushka Sharma is pretty, but she is yet to prove her versatility. Parineeti seems a better prospect for me than Anushka when it comes to ACTING. Sonakshi can't act for sure. She is not even that pretty.

Rani's time is over. Rani, Kajol and Aishwarya are from the previous generation now.

It's sad there isn't much acting prowess in Bollywood, and if there is it gets ignored.

Very difficult to enter the film industry if you are not from a 'filmi' family and/or a Khan. This greatly limits the amount of talent in the industry, or at least the talent that gets to act in films with better publicity and bigger budgets. That being said, Kareena, Imran, and Ranbir have all proven themselves to be good (and in the case of Imran and Ranbir, excellent) actors.
