Hindi Cinema Discussion

:p .5 more than me.

Thats because of the really hard work from the camera and the background music. I thought Santosh Sivan spilled his blood for such a mediocre film. Everyone in the theatre during the interval said the cinematography was splendid. It was a full house for a Tamil film, which is a rarity for films that dont feature Rajnikanth (in the US) but by the end of it, everyone went so disappointed.

Rahman gave a 'Roja' feel with his background music. But all wasted!

Hindi version - 2.5/5 - Mani Ratnam fails altogether, Abhishek was not as irritating as Vikram but still Abhishek cant act beyond a certain level for this character. It just doesnt suit him (his 'Jig jig jig....' dialog style was awful; comparatively the 'buck buck buck buck' was better which was enhanced when Ash also did it in the end). Vikram in Hindi was good, but as usual no scope whatsoever. I found Ash much better in Hindi because she had her own voice (and even in Tamil, she was very good). Was impressed with Govinda, scene stealer. But he too deserved better from this film. The film just has everything in it to fail. Same cinematography (which is wonderful) and music, so no need for review on that.

But Mani will be back. Hoping for him to come back! Genius people can falter too.

Sid, have you heard Rona Chadita song from Atif Aslam of the upcoming punjabi movie Mel Karade Rabba? Atif Aslam rocks that song. I''m not fan of punjabi songs but that one is really great esp when it is sing by Atif. I think many pak have listen that song.

Finally saw Rajneeti. Will give it just 3/5 stars as I found nothing new from previous Prakash Jha movies. The film kept you involved throughout and was a good movie compared to other film makers have been dishing out lately.

Would have given it .5 more but deducted it for thinking that audience is fool. There were killings happening left right and center and top notch CM candidates do not get murdered like this in India. :facepalm

Off topic but I went to the AR Rahman concert in Chicago on Friday...omg. Absolutely spell binding. The guy is truly a genius. Simply awesome...my mind is blown.

Lucky you! Had you thought of going for the Detroit concert on Saturday, you would have returned empty handed. They had an accident in the sets on Saturday at Detroit (ARR even had to go to the hospital to check if he was alright) and the concert in Detroit and Toronto for the weekend was cancelled. ARR, it seems, is in India now to get some new instruments himself for the next weekend concerts.

Finally saw Raavan.
Don't know why people are criticizing it. For me, it was truly amazing.
The actors did a wonderful job and the cinematography was fantastic.

The story was interesting too. It was quite sure that at the end Beera has to die, but the way its presented takes all my praise.

Would easily give it 3.5 or even 4 on 5

The movie is getting mixed reviews. Some really like it, some dont like it at all. I felt it was brilliant from the technical and musical point of view, but Mani Ratnam is known to give better screenplays than this. No problem with the story at all (after all, you have to blame Valmiki and his 'Ramayan' if you find the story bad/boring). Though, I watched it second time and found it a lot better (many due to heavy expectations on Mani).

I might agree with what Amitabh Bachchan has said (that the editing of the film is sad). I guess they have chopped out quite a lot of scenes and that has hampered the screenplay quite a bit.

Saw Raavan today!
It didn't seem to me as a flop or something. Of Course the storyline was somewhat weak but I would rather blame it to the script. As Pranav and SaiSrini said, some of that dialogues were not at their best, somewhere direction problem etc. etc.

But I was truly impressed by the acting of Abhi, Ash and Govinda. I don't know why you people are saying that Abhishek's acting wasn't good in the movie but truly, I find it pretty amazing.(A little weaker than Dostana).
Aish was in her character the whole story and Govinda suited his character.

I would give it a rating 3/5. I have taken 0.5 for the "weird" last half hour of the movie, otherwise would've given 3.5.

The script was not the problem, the screenplay/narration was the problem. If you blame the script, then you cant blame Mani or Rensil D Silva (or whoever wrote it). You have to blame Valmiki who wrote the Ramayan. Sometimes evn though the script is very well known and not so engaging, the style of narration and the actor's performances lift the film greatly. But in the Hindi version, I can understand why it flopped. Abhishek didnt lift the film at all with his acting, and Ash didnt have much to do initially. Vikram had almost nothing to do in the film. Also the screenplay didnt keep the audience interested and so Mani takes blame there. And Pranav? Where did he review about Raavan? or are you referring to some other 'Pranav'?

Going on a different topic, saw 'Paathshala' today. I actually liked the film a lot. But one thing I didnt understand, after Nana Patekar gave that speech and after the students and Shahid persuaded him to stay back as Principal, what happens? They never actually solved the problem in the end. Did the school get back to its old ways? Did the pressure from the trustees (to upgrade the school) stop? Did the school get back to its original fees? Since the image/reputation of the trustees got hit, they would have surely hit back. Why didnt they show what the trustees did? The ending felt so incomplete (I almost though my downloaded file was corrupt). Apart from that, pretty good film. Soft and smooth, good performances, a feel good film. I felt Shahid and Ayesha pair rocks (almost as good as Shahid-Amrita Rao). The chemistry was awesome, but never utilised. Nana Patekar was his usual underplayed self. The "Aye Khuda" song (made even popular now by Indian Idol) keeps humming in my head. Nice film!
