Ah ha.... Exciting! 'Raavan' getting mixed opinions (all these only for Hindi version)

Raavan movie review: Wallpaper, Story, Trailer at Times of India

One more review from Rediff (by the popular 'by hate' Raja Sen) yet to come (he is likely to tear the movie apart). Taran's review is not surprising since he is a huge fan of Bollywood's regular sugary sweet and opulent films that too by the big stars (e.g. Shahrukh, Akshay, Salman, etc). His reviews for Rang De Basanti, Chak De India and Black prove a point (all these films went on to be classics and blockbusters).

All reviews point to the positives as "Cinematography, Music and the performances". Seems like the narration is not finding great takers though its a typical Mani style narration only. I guess people want racy narration in every film that they watch.

Many of my friends gave the exact review what Taran wrote.

disappointed. (no wonder it's junior bachan :p)

no, i wont go for it. will wait till it comes on national tv

The film has very good cinematography and I am not too keen on songs part as I have only heard one song from the file "ranjha ranjha" before going to the movie. Unfortunately that is not what I pay for while watching the movie.

Abby Baby is annoying to say the least and Ash was not too good not too bad. I have never seen Vikram in a movie before so it was nice change to see a new actor as I do not have any excess baggage connected with him.

The film suffers from the same problem which films suffer these days, they take audience for granted and think that having slick action, good music and cinematography will make it a hit. Boo hoo 2/5 is too generous by me as its a good plot gone horrible due to typical hindi film twist (i dont want to spoil fun).

Wait for it to come on TV in two months time. Not recommended for 180 rupee ticket and 180 rupee worth of eatables and cold drink. :facepalm

Fight on bridge is a strong point of movie :D

Ahhh!!! "Dus Saro Wale.."

Loved Ravaana a lot. Abhi is awesome in the movie

Abhi? Thats a rare thing I am hearing (not many have praised Abhi). Anyways, mixed as usual (I am hearing one person say its really good followed by one that says its so boring).

After the reviews, my expectations for the Hindi version are completely squashed.

SaiSrini added 1 Minutes and 58 Seconds later...

I heard Vikram's role was too short and the focus was completely on Abhi-Ash. Thats terrible. Why did Mani chose Vikram for that role? He is a National award winner and he plays the title role in the Tamil version. Could have chosen Madhavan instead for the Hindi version.

You heard it from me - The movie is going to be a huge flop (I still havent watched it though). As big as Kites, I dont know. But both Hrithik and AB have almost given two disasters together. I guess Mani should drop AB from his upcoming films. Too much of criticism and negative talk comes even before the movie releases. And if the film is not good, it multiples rapidly. Mani can retain Ash and have her work with other heroes, since she is very much open to it.

The regional versions are getting much better talk (especially for the casting). Mani should understand that he is more comfortable in his own territory. Let him direct only Tamil films, and let someone else remake it in Hindi (get his assistants to do it and let Mani produce it in Hindi). Anyways he has got enough national exposure (the national media has even talked about his Tamil classic films in the build up to Raavan). So if he makes a Tamil film, it will do well all over. Also it would be a better choice for his health (he has already had two heart attacks while shooting for Yuva and Raavan). Directing two films simultaneously should not be his job. A younger film maker should handle such stuff.

First, the acting. A terrific Beera could have singleheadedly turned Raavan around. But given the load of the 10 heads, Abhishek’s performance is disappointingly uneven. There are moments of brilliance but those are few and far between. Most of the time, his facial gesticulations are irritating and repetitive. His stare holds the frame perfectly but it is his speech and behaviour that undo the emotional content. In an attempt to portray his 10-way-split personality, he often goes overboard and his “cha-cha-cha-cha” mannerism gets worse with every usage. It remains a mystery why ‘Mani Sir’, who made an actor out of the Yuva, couldn’t make a memorable character out of a Beera.

Ratnam’s other discovery is not a lot better. He fondly uses a still postcard from Iruvar but Aishwarya cannot ever rise above the 600-odd shrieks earmarked for her. To be fair to her, Ragini is the least defined character with confused lines like “Tum hotey kaun ho mujhe maarne waale?”. She shows signs of the Stockholm Syndrome when Beera falls in love with her but you never get a peek through those hypnotic eyes of what’s going on inside her head.

Ash does look beautiful as Mani makes her look (don’t miss the hair parted and straightened), dress (courtesy our very own Sabyasachi Mukherjee) and move (the folded legs shuffling on the ground) like the women in the Noh theatre of Japan.

There you go! Another overhyped Bollywood film biting the dust. *sigh* After 'Raavan' it should become abundantly clear that Abhisek is a failure of EPIC proportions and doesn't deserve to be casted in films as big as this. He is still finding ground beneath his feet in the industry only because of his father. Doesn't have any acting talent of his own at all.

Just came back from the Tamil version (Hindi version not screened in my place). TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED with the film. For me, its Mani's weakest work (I liked Guru and Yuva). If Vikram can be disappointing as Veera, then god help Abhishek (i.e. in my view). Ash was very good (and looked stunning). The climax fight in the bridge was superbly picturised, and the climax itself was interesting. But the biggest let down was by Mani. First half wandered nowhere. The second half got something moving, but still not captivating enough to hold most people's attentions.

Rating: 2.5/5

I have a feeling I might like the Hindi one a lil bit more (maybe due to better dialogues, Mani's wife actress Suhasini butchered with the Tamil dialogues), but most likely it will struggle to touch even 3/5.

Aishwarya impresses US critics in 'Raavan' - Movies News - Bollywood - ibnlive

Why is it that films which pick up hugely negative reviews in India go on to impress critics in the United States, whereas films on which we shower praises fail to intrigue their audience? I found the same in case of 'Kites' as well. Quite a strange thing.

I think its more on the mindset of the people. I think it could do a lot with the culture of the place. Anyways bit disappointed to see so many members giving the films thumbs down :(
Ohhh well toy story 3 it is! :p

Apparently, the Westerners do not like love stories lacking substance and having too much of song/dance. However, Kites was exactly like that, and if I go by the reviews, Raavan is somewhat like that as well with crass acting on part of Abhisek who happens to play the lead character of the movie. So I'm kind of surpriesd that these two films have been able to impress the Hollywoodi audience so profoundly.
