Did you hold the left stick all the way out? It's fine if your batsman stands forward in the crease for the purposes of this experiment.
Right, attempt 2 at playing this way.
Putting to one side the spinner that was operating when I first came on, I had one fast and one medium fast. Playing that way was moderately effective - I was able to score at a run a ball, largely because they were pitching it up (50 over match). The leg side shots were generally going backward of square (which likely means I was late) and the offside shots through extra cover (possibly because I wasn't aiming at the covers properly with the RS).
I made about 10 runs before I got an inside edge, playing away from the body to one (again!) short of length. Of course, it was a terrifically fine inside edge and went straight to the keeper.
It does seem an effective way to play, at least while there were gaps where I was hitting the ball. Utterly unfun, however, and if that's what the game comes down to then I'm not at all interested.
*edit* Another go.
Interestingly, after I got into it I realised this is the way I play fast and medium fast bowlers anyway - and it gets me in trouble when they drop short.
This particular time, I hit it down square legs' throat when one got banged in and I pulled it instead of turning it. Unfortunately for the bowler, it was a no-ball. I lol'd.
Ended up getting 74, largely because the spinner bowled without a long-on during a power play, and the medium pacer decided to bang it in short and I cleared the square leg/midwicket fielders a few times.
I also got to see something I'd never seen before. I skied one to deep backward square. He dropped it ...
