Just to add my two cents to the debate here, the reason why many posters here are blaming Rohit/Kohli over Dhoni is because Dhoni is no longer the player who is going to perform miracles to win you games. At best, he does the bare minimum that an average player playing for a top team should be doing at 5/6. The lack of intent that he showed today was awful but it has been something that he’s doing for over two years. Most people are now used to it. His fans defend these performances with crazy theories whilst most of us rue the fact that a player who shouldn’t be here on merit is playing only because the BCCI didn’t groom a replacement for him at all due to him wanting to be here in this World Cup at ANY cost.

Again, the player makes his own career decisions and nobody can question him for his career choices. If the country's selection board and cricket board places importance on a player's reputation and picks them based on it, they are to blame. You can't blame a Sachin or a Dhoni for staying beyond a certain time when it is the selectors and the decision makers who should put emotion out of it and drop that player and pick a different one.

Also , Rahul needs to be switched back to #4 or 5 whatever . As it is he has done nothing even with his 30s or 40s just because of his strike rate of 75 odd . Pant needs to be the thrashing opener .

And this what I believe should be the opening criterias >> One a slasher & the other a mediocre .
Just like the Pakistani openers .

And like I mentioned during the middle of England’s innings, cutters and deliveries with varying pace was the way to bowl on this flat pitch in the style of a T20 game. And just like I predicted, Plunkett ended up being vital with his wickets.

On pitches like this, no other team can even come close to England unless they suffer a massive brainfade. Their players simply don’t care for any personal achievements, all that matters to them is scoring at a brisk pace no matter the fifty or century mark. In contrast, teams like Australia and India fret too much about players making the ‘big’ score of a century and then cashing in. It might work on more bowler friendly pitches due to the lack of reverse swing, but on these flat decks you need to go after the bowlers actively.

The most worrying sign for opposition fans is that England were actually playing sensible cricket today, almost to the other extreme given the Root innings’ and their relatively sedate start in the powerplay. They blocked the good deliveries and tried to go after the other deliveries. It remains to be seen if they can grind it out on the tougher pitches but if they do, they’ll be unstoppable especially if they rejig their batting lineup to allow Stokes to build an innings and Buttler to take his time to really get his eye in.

Given that it was Dhoni that shut the door down on the long term career prospects of several senior players during his captaincy period, it seems a bit ironic and hypocritical for him to be the elder statesman standing in the way of progress now.

It's strange how our fans feel like it's the end of the world, that too after we faced our only defeat after seven matches. It was disappointing to see our so called supporters leave the stadium before the last over or so.

We've some of the worst fans which are over critical of the team and expect us to win every game.

Going to be an exciting week ahead, especially if England lose to New Zealand.Weather looks good also.

India is a place where a captain moulds his team and gets the team he wants. But once you're an individual player, you choose what is best for you. Dhoni standing in the way of progress is your perception. What if Dhoni thinks that he still has it in him? Then its in the selectors and Kohli's hands to take a decision.

This is a perennially old discussion on "whether a player should be blamed for making himself available for selection or should the selectors be blamed". I'm always going to be on the side that says the player sticks it out till he calls his time and that its the decision makers (selectors, current captain, team management) who take the call.

No one is calling it the end of the world. But the whole approach to a big chase was awfully wrong and not for the first time. We have been failing to chase above par scores for a while now. The start and the end of this chase were just horribly planned out. Some changes are required

And honestly our win against AFG was another alarm. I think against west indies too we ended up with a below par score.

I actually welcome such a loss in the ground stage. Better now than in a knockout game. Will help us iron out the chinks in the armor at the right time

I'd have left with Dhoni and Jadhav knocking singles around. Getting home from Edgbaston can be a pain too.

You seriously think that they will drop Dhoni? He got 40+ off 30 odd balls at a S/R of 140. In the end, it looks real good.

I will not advocate Dhoni being dropped ever in this WC. I am talking about Dhoni/Pant in the sense that who should bat at 4/5. For example, England scored an own goal today by keeping Buttler back for the longest time.

LOL Seriously? One loss and we lose our mind to pick a line-up where our batting is only till number 4? No, thanks. Same team for me in the next game. I can agree with the inclusion of Jadeja and Bhuvi for dropping a wrist spinner if we are playing a game again on a pitch like today but definitely not that line-up. MS Dhoni is not going to be dropped.

I think you have gone mad. I am saying Dhoni/Pant at 4/5 depending on the situation. Pant looked good for the while he was there. And I am a huge advocate for 5 bowlers plus Pandya.

I don't know how can I explain this but for the first time in my life I'd actually not oppose these people who left the stadium before game finished. After all they didn't pay for tickets to watch their favorite players run a horror show.

And those tickets are damn expensive in the first place! :mad

As an England supporter, once Pandya and Pant were out I wasn't worried at all. Dhoni can't chase 10 per over and Jadhav looks very average. If one of them had got out it's a long tail. As it was, Jadhav and Dhoni did us a favour by not going for a big shot until they needed 38 off the last over.

England bowled very well but India lost it in the first 10 overs. Although had we not got the timely wickets of Sharma and Kohli it could've been different.

I wouldn't be disheartened, chasing 300+ in this World Cup has proved impossible for everyone except Bangladesh.
