ICC Rankings of the best test batsmans & bowlers of all time

Well then, I guess the ICC lists are meant for the more intelligent people. Not for a person with average intelligence as yours truly. And my average intelligence is clearly my own problem, can't blame the ICC for that!

The lists are very easy to understand they simply show the highest points a player has achieved during a certain period.

Hayden scores X amount this scores him Y amount of points with things like how good the opponents are factored in over a period of time, I dont know how many runs score how many points but you get my drift.

Tendulkar may have scored lots of runs but may not have done the best in a certain period of time so his ranking isn't as high as say Bradman who reeled off centuries after centuries giving him a high ranking.

Themer added 1 Minutes and 26 Seconds later...

Just like you I can also say that any ranking system which has Sachin placed in the 26th spot is also WRONG. FULL STOP.

Best footballer in the world? included in that statement?

Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings

Read that.

The rankings are the HIGHEST POINT a batsman/bowler has achieved over his career.

That's what I'm saying mate. Is a list of the players who got the highest numerical ratings in the ICC table the same as an all-time best list?

Now look at the title, doesn't it say that it's a list of the all-time best cricketers? And if the title does indeed explain that it is a ICC highest rating points list, then consider the following from their FAQ,
What do the ratings measure?

Think of the Reliance Mobile ICC ratings as a system for identifying the players who could be selected for an ICC World XI if it was picked today. Take a look at the latest top tens, and you should find that most of the players at the top would be candidates for your current World XI. The ratings have often been described as a measure of form, but this is a simplification. A form rating would only look at what a player has done in (say) the last year, whereas our ratings take into account a player's entire career - though they put more emphasis on what he has done recently.

Isn't picking a World XI the same as picking the best players of all time?!

No, thats for the normal rating, which tells us whos played the best in the last say 6 months to a year and is playing the best cricket in the world at this moment so would go in a World XI if it were picked at this moment, hope you get it.

I guess you are right.

It doesn't tell us who has the best Numerical ratings of all time, its closer to telling us who had the best spell of form ever.

READ THIS IF YOU STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND

The ratings aren't technically who's the greatest player over their career! Its the highest form/point they have reached.

Ill use an example.

Sachin is one of the greats ever, over his career he would of averaged a rating of probaly 700-800.

NOW, lets pick a really really bad batsman. Ill use Glenn McGrath. Now Glens average would of probaly been 0-100 over his career. But lets say hypothetically Glenn has an AWESOME test series and scored hundreds, his rating at the time could spike to 850, but then fall dramatically as his form faded.

In this case, on the list the ICC just put out, Glen would be ranked higher than Sachin, but that doesn't mean Glen is a better batsman then Sachin does it??? no, of course not.

What they should of done is released a list of the top rankings for the average score for each player. You would then probaly find Sachin in the top 5

You are right there. But since they haven't mentioned any different logic they might have used while arriving at the Best XI, I think it's fair to assume that they have extended the same logic to the Best XI list. So basically selecting a 'Reliance Mobile ICC best ever Test Championship rating' means selecting the players that would be in an all-time Best XI, just like the way they select their present day XI.

I don't think anyone here is saying that ICC rankings are correct, or that they actually represent the best XI. The point being made here is that the ICC has indeed come out with an all-time best XI list, simply by comparing the highest ever ratings of a player.

After I read a bit more into this, I guess this is what happened. The rating list just had a problem in the name IMO. They should have phrased the title better. Nothing to feel outraged about. Tone down on the words people.

No they aren't saying that those at the top would be in a best ever team, they've simply published a list that says who has had the highest scores of all time in their ranking system regardless of how good they are or how good they think they are.

The people who did this have done so because:
1.They Want to Show that they dont know who sachin is or they dont want to see his name.
OR

2.It's a Big Mistake.
OR

3.They want the Indian people and Media to shout at them and then they would republish the list.
OR

4.They Haven't held a Bat or Played Cricket Themselves...

The reason you have posted this drivel is because

1. You are in love with Sachin

2. Have posted without reading any posts in this thread

3. Haven't read anything on the link

4. Or just like to flame

Which ever floats you boat really.

As has been said numerous times now this list does not say that everyone above Sachin is better than him it simply shows the best ranking points an individual has ever achieved

Come to India and you will come to know who is SACHIN TENDULKAR...

Don't be ridiculous.

As has been explained multiple times in the thread, the ranking is based on the highest rating they achieved in their career. If I played 5 tests and scored hundreds in all of them, I would get a very high rating at this point in time. Even if I did sod all for the next ten years, I would be ranked above a player who scored 2 hundreds every series over the same time period. The ICC are not claiming these are the best players of all time in order.

Look, Sachin has the 26th highest point ever by a individual player you can't argue with the facts. They havent just plucked numbers out the sky.

It's very easy to sit in air conditioned offices and make Ranking list.....Great Player dont shout that they are great..
