India in England Jun-Sept 2014

A little odd for Ashwin to be MoTM, felt both Raydu and Raina were ahead of him for that, but I suppose the Bowlers did set up the win, so I guess fair enough it goes to the best of the bowlers.

Good win for India, but I am very worried about the kind of seamers India seem to pick with an eye on the WC. The WC will be played in Australia/NZ conditions where "hit the deck" kind of bowlers thrive the most. From these two games so far, Shami is the only guy who is capable of that. Both Kumar and M Sharma are "skid it through" type bowlers. And that Joginder Sharma over in the 2007 WC has done enough damage for Dhoni to be constantly picking bowlers of that kind who take the pace off and bowl it far slower. Yadav needs to be given opportunities. You cant just try Yadav in the tri-series in Australia just before the WC. He needs some games here to get going. Even if he gets carted around, he should be persisted. If Dhawal Kulkarni is not going to be used, wonder why they unnecessarily picked him. I would have kept Ishwar Pandey in the ODI side. That guy with his height/bounce can be a good performer in Australia. His speeds are very McGrath'ish which should be fine as McGrath did great in Australia.

I am not looking too much into our spin performance here as I am confident that spin is not going to play a very big role in Australia/NZ. I think Rayudu should be persisted with for the WC since he looks solid and good. My batting lineup for the WC would be: Rahane, Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Rayudu, Raina, Dhoni. One additional batsman is needed. I am torn between Samson and Yuvraj Singh. I am not keen on Vijay at all. If we can go with a 16 man squad, both Samson and Yuvraj can sneak in and we can still go with 7 bowlers. I would have said Manoj Tiwary but that poor guy doesn't seem to be anywhere near the radar. Bowling lineup should be: Ashwin, Jadeja, Shami, Yadav, Kumar. The last two slots are going to be a lottery as the guys who need to be there are not playing right now (Aaron and Pandey). I guess they will go with Mohit and whoever. India's seamers for the WC is going to be a headache

I would prefer an in form Yuvraj over Rayudu.

I did mention Yuvraj in there (read below; he is just not in the Top 7 that I have bolded). He can go along with Rayudu in the squad. I wouldnt want India to play Yuvraj purely for reputation. We paid a big price for it in the T20 WC.

Or else Rahane back if Gambhir gets back into form.

I thought about Gambhir, but we already have enough opening options in Rohit, Rahane and Dhawan that I dont think we need to waste time with Gambhir's non-existent form.

To me, our seamers are the biggest headache. Its going to be Australia/NZ conditions, and we need the right seamers there. I wish Aaron comes back in the scheme of things for ODI's too. He did very well in the tests here. I dont see why he can do that in ODI's. In fact, Aaron is a better bowler than Yadav in ODI's and vice versa in tests. But the selectors seem to think otherwise.

Wow Anderson really got the full blast from the crowd there. All said and done, Anderson shouldn't really be getting booed in his own country, that too on his fav ground (perhaps even his home ground in County, I am not sure)
Old Trafford is Anderson's home ground. He's a Burnley lad.
And booing is just part of what the crowds do at all sports here, it really isn't a big deal. I know in some cultures it is a massive insult, but it isn't to us.

Booing itself it not an insult, just that it was happening in his own country. In India an India cricketer would never get booed. Unless he was in a really low rut or something, in which the Indian fans would be booing him and not the visiting team fans. The booing crowd was mostly India fans, and that just goes to show how dominant they were in the crowd, and that is why it will never happen in India. At any game, no crowd will ever outnumber the Indian fans and then boo Indian players.

That is what I meant, its odd that Eng fans are being outnumbered, and fans of visiting team shouldn't really be able to outnumber the home team crowd so significantly so as to make the booing of a home player significantly obvious.

That's because Nottingham has a large Asian population and, like I've said before, we don't care about ODIs like we care about Test matches.

Yeah - to be honest, I'm not that fussed about ODIs... If there's cricket on, I'll watch it, but test matches are the #1 for me.

I would rather we won the next Ashes series than the World Cup.

Shame there's no more tests for so long now.

Its odd that Eng don't care about ODIs, considering that all major trophies are in the ODI format. I am not taking anything away from the Tests, and that is the toughest format of cricket and also this ODI win doesn't take anything away from the fact that Ind were poor in tests, but, ODIs are also important as all major trophies are in the ODI format. I remember in the 90s Eng had stopped caring about cricket entirely as they wre not winning anything, but the Ashes win revived interest in tests, and perhaps if and when Eng win any major tournament, maybe they will realise that ODIs matter too.

Though I suppose its a discussion for another day, I guess.

We've already had the Ashes v the World Cup debate. I'm telling you, as England fans we would always -always - put winning the Ashes above winning the World Cup.

The reason we don't care about ODIs is not because we're no good at them. It's just not something that gets the juices flowing for us.
