Now we have Yash Dayal in the squad . With the way these guys are getting picked , me & @Ashutosh. have full chances of making India debut ... :p:p:p

At least Dayal’s got a better List A record than Kuldeep Sen who’s going to face NZ.

Guy who has played 7 List A matches averages 50 with the ball, has an economy rate of 5.90 is going to be playing on the NZ grounds. I mean some of the selection baffles me. I mentioned few months ago, some times its a boon, some its a curse having such a bench strength or being in a country of billion trillion gazilion people.

Squad selection defies all logic. What's the point in resting your main men if they are going to turn up for World Cups woefully out of form???

With less than 12 months to go, we haven't even identified our core. Instead we are trialling out captains with alarming frequency yet again.

What I'd like to really see is a change in the selection committee. There was talk of Agarkar getting the top job. If he is up for it, let him. Else hope they get back the like of Vengsarkar and Amarnath into a much ridiculous panel.

I would love to see what sort of a squad you might pick..

I’ll just point out a few peeves of mine before attempting a squad pick later. Bear in mind that I've seen all four squads selected and hence my opinion is based on that.

  • Big one is Shaw missing out yet again. Chetan Sharma said they’re still looking at him and will give him a chance ‘soon’. NZ selected Allen when he was far less accomplished and they’re reaping the rewards now. Any other team would have made Shaw an integral part by now. The bloke offers such a rare skillset and is one of the few modern T20 batters we have and he isn't even being selected for any squad.

  • Why is Gill in the T20I squad? He had a couple of nice performances in the IPL but fizzled out eventually and showed that he is more of the accumulator others can bat around. We've already selected Shreyas in the team for it, what is the need for another one? He's got one fifty so far in the SMAT and that was from 44 deliveries. Hasn't exactly been in sparkling domestic form.

  • Again, Umran Malik?! Last we saw him he got thrashed internationally and didn't do much of note vs NZ A either. In the SMAT he's been okay but again, nothing significantly good barring one four wicket haul. To put things into perspective, Arjun tweaking Tendulkar has more wickets than him in the SMAT. What is the rationale behind his selection barring it being 'fearsome tweak it, bowl fast'? And even if he is selected, he is not getting in ahead of the likes of Harshal, Bhuvi and Arshdeep barring the odd game that they'll term as rotating the XI. If at all you want him in the squad for fine tuning and experience, select him as the net bowler instead of handing call-ups like candy.

  • Chahal and Kuldeep ahead of Bishnoi? I don't mind Kuldeep in the T20I squad but the last time we saw Bishnoi in a T20I he was our best bowler when everyone else was carted around and since then he's played a grand total of one ODI. Unless he has an injury that I'm unaware of... not selecting him is crazy.

  • Hardik isn't in any of the ODI squads. If you're worried about his workload maybe bowl him less in an ODI or select him as a specialist batter? Again, unless there is an injury concern here that I'm unaware of... not selecting him is equally crazy.

  • Look at those ODI squads. One of them has Patidar, Tripathi, Yash Dayal. And it is the one that has every other regular barring Hardik in it. Why would you call them up? Are there any other A tour programs that I'm unaware of here? SKY is missing in the Bangladesh ODI squad ffs. The more I look at it, the more it seems like the two ODI squads were picked as one and then they drew straws/lots to determine which player goes into which squad. I can only assume that the blokes in both squads have the selector's nudes.

  • Now to Kuldeep Sen. I don't mind his selection again, it's a wildcard pick and unlike Umran he did better against NZ A IMO and hasn't yet played internationally. However is this the right time to call him up? Two of his List A games were those A games, he's severely undercooked as a pacer. In this SMAT he's gone at over 10 rpo and has bowled the same number of overs that renowned backup pace all-rounder Venky Iyer has for Madhya Pradesh. The next WC is in India too. A fast pacer is nice to have and I get the need for wanting a Bumrah backup after his injury exposed how terrible planning was in that department but it isn't necessary for a subcontinental WC. We've still got Shami and Siraj in there, the former is an excellent ODI pacer and the latter has been improving even if I rate him only as a test pacer. Another VHT campaign would have been ideal for Sen with a couple of A games before he was called up.

  • So we've got two ODI series, one in a spin graveyard and another in the spin temple. We've selected three finger spinners, all of whom are all-rounders for one of them and two specialist wrist spinners plus two finger spinners for the other. Except that the former is for Mirpur's ODIs and the latter is in NZ. Anyone care to explain why this is the case? My straws theory is increasingly looking good.

  • Gaikwad is selected when he wasn't in good nick and out of form and was persisted with then. Now that he's striking well in the SMAT in a new position, let's drop him because why not? I suppose his international performances meant his spot is secure but Samson has been crap in the SMAT and has been playing as an accumulator rather than the aggressor that he claims to be. If at all you wanted a chance to show that this team is big on the aggression, Samson should have been 'rested' for the NZ T20I series to mean business.

  • I don't rate Vihari highly and believe he'll never be quality test standard but after grinding it for years and finally being nominated the heir to Pujara.. we've gone back to the latter with Vihari completely out of the picture now? He's had what, a couple of bad series internationally? This ain't T20 cricket, you need to back a player for an important spot like number three and if Vihari is supposed to be that guy then he deserves to be backed. Also I assumed that Vihari had seniority over Shreyas in the squad hierarchy but Shreyas has retained his spot despite looking lost in England.

  • No Sarfaraz is baffling. Again, all the talk of chances and soon yet he's never talked of as a serious prospect. He could have done better in the A series but he did look good and a tour of Bangladesh was the ideal place to get him into the setup.

  • Four pacers for Mirpur's spin paradise seems... excessive. Should have had a batter (like Sarfaraz) or someone else in there instead of a pacer. Unless they did not want to upset the apple cart of regulars. Kuldeep again in tests? He was last seen being a non-factor in Chennai and since then hasn't really impressed as much in the FC match against NZ A. Saurabh Kumar took a fifer in the same series. Another left-arm orthodox spinner might feel a bit same-y but if he's the next cab off the rank then why not? If at all they wanted an aggressive spinner who bowled differently, Rahul Chahar was there.

  • My biggest pet peeve has to be the captains nominated. Hardik is fine. But Pant as vice-captain in T20Is? The man can't even crack the first XI despite the state of it due to how terrible he has been so far after 50 odd games and he still enjoys this sort of job security. Rahul as the vice-captain will always bug me when there's Shreyas in the squad. Dhawan has to be the biggest one though. He's a crap captain not to mention his age. Why do we still give it to him on the basis of seniority? Let Pant be the captain in ODIs or Shreyas or even Gill if you want to go wild all of whom are players guaranteed to be in the XI for the next 5-6 years.

What a pathetic squad.
Kishan
Gill
SKY
Samson
Pant (vc/wk)
Hardik (c)
Sundar
Bhuvi
Arshdeep Singh
Chahal
Siraj

Makes up a pretty decent XI IMO. However, I can undestand the frustration of having Pant in the line-up since he hasn't performed for ages now. Harshal & Shreyas are definitely not taking this side anywhere but they are still looked up as backups.

Hopefully Kuldeep Yadav's home series performances should put questions over Chahal's place.

Siraj may not be the best of candidates as a bowler in the shorter formats of the game but I think a calm head that Hardik have got as a leader might bring the best out of him.

Umran looks quite off on most days and seriously needs to learn about control and discipline as far as his line & length is concerned but I genuinely believe he has got potential. He just needs some direction. The same can be said about Navdeep Saini who for some reason isn't with the team anymore.

If I had to sum up the ramblings in my post.. all I'd have to say is that these squads just seem to be picked on the basis of wanting everyone to feel like they're an international cricketer not being left out (unless you're Shaw. Or Sarfaraz) and to have a large pool of cricketers capable of stepping in at any time if needed. This is evidenced by our 'B Team' being competitive against most international sides in bilaterals. However this is at the expense of our main XI always having unanswered questions and them coasting by on reputation. Dhawan for instance hasn't played a truly modern ODI knock in a while and yet continues to not only be in every ODI squad but also be named captain.

It also feels like there's a certain set of regulars who under the guise of being rested are termed undroppable and any questions that might threaten their spot or place is quietly dealt with (see Bishnoi, Hooda in the top order and until he kicked down the barn door after a few lucky injury breaks to others, Arshdeep). These squads just feel so same-y in terms of the same backups being rotated in and out without them really threatening to get into the first XI or selecting a genuinely exciting player unless they happen to bowl 145+ kph in which case nothing matters, you're in! Why not for once try out players that have a real shot at establishing themselves in the main playing XI and then giving them the platform to stay there? (see Gill, impresses in ODIs to the point of having people question the point of Dhawan and Rahul in ODI setup, he's now only selected in the NZ ODI squad and quietly 'rested' when the other 'regulars' re-enter while Dhawan still remains)
