India Team Discussion

  • Big one is Shaw missing out yet again. Chetan Sharma said they’re still looking at him and will give him a chance ‘soon’. NZ selected Allen when he was far less accomplished and they’re reaping the rewards now. Any other team would have made Shaw an integral part by now. The bloke offers such a rare skillset and is one of the few modern T20 batters we have and he isn't even being selected for any squad.
They will select Shaw when he moves away from his purple patch. An easy decision for them to drop him instantaneously. Given our top order woes, he ought to have been a part of the current team. A quickfire 40 on a bouncy Perth pitch- is what he is capable of- this can change the entire game in a matter of minutes. Rohit has wanted this aggression from players, -really ridiculous that they are leaving him out.

  • Why is Gill in the T20I squad? He had a couple of nice performances in the IPL but fizzled out eventually and showed that he is more of the accumulator others can bat around. We've already selected Shreyas in the team for it, what is the need for another one? He's got one fifty so far in the SMAT and that was from 44 deliveries. Hasn't exactly been in sparkling domestic form.

Shreyas & Gill need to be a part of the ODI setup, not the T20. Radical batsmen like these have the ability to graft runs and score better as the game progresses.
  • Hardik isn't in any of the ODI squads. If you're worried about his workload maybe bowl him less in an ODI or select him as a specialist batter? Again, unless there is an injury concern here that I'm unaware of... not selecting him is equally crazy.

Perhaps the direction they intend to take with the T20 is to have Hardik as the full-time skipper. I would have assumed though that he was an integral part of the ODI setup, at least until the CWC 2023- the talk of workload is all b.s . you will them all turn up for the IPL, play 14-16 games in a row, perform without breaking down.

  • My biggest pet peeve has to be the captains nominated. Hardik is fine. But Pant as vice-captain in T20Is? The man can't even crack the first XI despite the state of it due to how terrible he has been so far after 50 odd games and he still enjoys this sort of job security. Rahul as the vice-captain will always bug me when there's Shreyas in the squad. Dhawan has to be the biggest one though. He's a crap captain not to mention his age. Why do we still give it to him on the basis of seniority? Let Pant be the captain in ODIs or Shreyas or even Gill if you want to go wild all of whom are players guaranteed to be in the XI for the next 5-6 years.
I agree whole-heartedly! I'd even be happy if Sanju was nominated as the deputy to Pandya/ let him take over the reigns. Given the selections miracles, I am sure that Samson wouldn't be a part of the CWC 2023 squad. India's best bet would be to promote him to lead the T20 side and build a team around him for WT2024. This frees up Hardik to take part in the ODI setup.

Pant and Rahul as deputies have never fascinated me. They have utterly looked out of sorts and God Help Indian cricket if either takes over in the near future. The mad fan-base is still clamoring for these guys without looking at their performances.

Shreyas or Gill becoming ODI captain makes sense as they have worked hard and established themselves over the last year in the ODI setup. Just ause KL, Virat and Rohit want rest every now and then, doesn't give the selectors a right to mess around.

Glad people think along the same line as me regards to Gill. The guy needs to be kept away from T20. ODI and Test cricket is where he belongs. I really banged my head on the wall seeing Dhawan captain and Pant as vice captain in the respective formats. We need to look for long term now and need to do it quickly. Shreyas Iyer too should only be tried in ODIs. I somehow have lost confidence in him tbh and don't think he should be in the team. I don't know but he gets out in a way most of the times and looks like a walking wicket. Has some technique issues maybe, hopefully if he can sort those out..

So I take it KLR doesn't visit these forums.
He visits me in my dreams for some spanking! He gets the spanking while I take Athiya away from her to a dumpster.

The amount of support that the Indian management has given to KLR is unreal. KLR hasn't repaid that faith at all. With Rohit too, we saw a similar level of support- however, the main difference being that it came from the then captain Dhoni and not from the coach/ selectors.

KLR's support reeks massively of what I term as the building up of a #KarnatakaLobby in Indian cricket. Dravid, Sunil Joshi, Laxman(Hyderabad- South Indian nevertheless) and now Roger Binny as Board Prez. Anil Kumble too, hasn't taken his usual potshots at Rahul suggesting that he needs more time. Never saw Kumble use this approach with the other wards under him in Indian cricket or at KXIP. Disgusting!:abuse:

Honestly, I don't buy this. It certainly feels that way but I would be highly surprised if this is going unnoticed or is being allowed. I do agree that there is unwavering support for KLR since the Dravid era. The indications are clear that he is almost certain (I would say 1000%) to be next heir to Rohit once he hangs his boots.

But I would definitely not tag it as what it's being talked about.

Well, with Dravid as coach, KLR as heir apparent, Sunil Joshi as selector and Binny as PRez, its a matter of time before this is picked up by the media

With all the strays he’s caught and the jinxing going on around him, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he ends up being the best Indian batter in the tournament. :p
This did not bode well
