India tour of Australia Nov'20-Jan'21

We could've easily had a 100+ lead after having Australia on 79/5. But then clueless bowling with no game plan cost us a lot.

First 5 = 79 runs
Last 5 = 112 runs

It's a mental block. When the last 5 are consistently scoring more than the first 5 then there's surely something mentally wrong with the Indian bowler's mindset.

The walking wicket doesn't disappoint.

We have 1 guy at the top and 4 down the order who, while batting, think that they are obligated to gift their wickets away to the opposition. Seriously puts a lot of pressure on the other 6 batsmen.

Ravichandran Ashwin you beautyyyy!!

Would love to ask our coach who the lead spinner now is?

How many catches did Saha drop today? Is he not in the team to take those? I don't have any issue with Saha and as I had said, he would be my first choice keeper in India considering the circumstances currently but the sheer ill treatment of Pant who dropped so many catches already without playing the test match should firmly SHUT UP!!

The argument surrounding the openers was never one in my head. Shaw is just playing because we have this pathetic lust for nostalgia and treating players for replicas of the past than creating originals. KL would walk into any team in the world.

I personally have always felt that in tests we highly devalue Jadeja and Ashwin's batting. Vihari does not provide any confidence and KL should have opened this game with Gill at 6.

What I expect now to happen is for Kohli to leave, Gill to replace him and then Rohit to replace one of Gill/KL/Vihari. Someone will be treated unfairly without a doubt which is why it would have been better to assign roles to these people for two test matches and not one.

Overall, I am very happy. At the end of the day I do love my country and my cricket and we are ahead. Please Virat, sign off with a hundred only you can make. Then just take the next flight for an occasion we will all be happy for you and Jinks can hopefully take us over the line.

I still don't think Umesh bowled well but it's a good day. Whoever that new fielding coach is has done some serious wonders to a team that actually was a good catching side everywhere bar the slips. I have no idea what is going on.

I am sorry if I go long with this. You know I have my own share of favoritism or you would say bias towards KL Rahul. Some 3-4 years ago, I would be more than happy to have somebody like KL Rahul in my team.

Reasons?
He has a good height to counter the swing and bounce of the pacers
He is very aggressive at the top of the order and is equally capable of grinding it out
He can play shots everywhere across the ground and has a 360-degree game like AB de Villiers.

But things changed for me suddenly when he went to England and he consistently got out to the balls that came in to him. I mean he looked rather clueless to such balls and he developed a consistent pattern of getting out to the in-swingers and this is the thing that played in his head and he soon turned into someone who was rather unsure about his game. This went on to terribly affect his confidence. He rather started to look too much into his game. Now what does it suggest? It suggests that KL have a thing called confidence issues, there is a certain nature in few individuals who would rather overthink when they fail to achieve that they would be looking for and this has a terrible impact on the career of a person especially a sports player. Now how would to resolve this issue? Honestly there is no remedy for this and that individual would rather have to go through this and wait for success to come towards his way, this thing can make him confident and would rather help him discover his flaw on his own.

Now do you think he has actually improved on his game since then? My simple answer is a big NO!!! And this is very much evident with how he has approached his game since that horrendous England and Australia tour. You know he was actually struggling to have his bat on the ball during the Asia Cup and the West Indies series that he played at home before going to Australia in 2018. He was very low on confidence when he played the T20I series at home against Australia in February 2019. He did well in the IPL that year and gained a little confidence due to which he scored a 100 against Bangladesh in the Warm-up of the World Cup. Yes he did have a good World Cup but he was never really tested with that in-swinger throughout the World Cup and post that. But he didn't have a great time in West Indies in the Test series and he was dropped!!! Yes, he did score well in the ODI series against West Indies at home but on flat pitches where there was hardly any chance of the in-swinger to trouble him, same happened during the T20I series in New Zealand. But do you remember the way he got out in the 2nd ODI in New Zealand this year? Yes, that big inswinger on good length!!! So it is quite evident he still has the issue with that ball. And you know if he does play and he fails to improve he would once again suffer with that confidence issue which might result in the loss of form and confidence in limited overs format as well. He needs to get back to the domestic Circuit and get his basics right. Only then he would be confident enough to get through a tough series. He needs time.

If there is a question about who needs to open with Agarwal then for sure Shaw is not the option. There is a player who has consistently opened for Punjab and is a prolific run-scorer for them. His name is Shubman Gill. Gill also scored a 100 this year batting in tough conditions in New Zealand against a good bowling attack. So why not try him out? See, he is young and since this is his first series he is only going to improve. My vote goes to Gill.

Ok so wow! Ashwin will be a walking wicket if the ball is moving and today it proved. I still feel his 12 runs were crucial and he can consistently score 20-25 runs and I feel that is a good contribution from him batting down. Saha did what he does the best, eats up the deliveries which is perfectly fine and needed in test but does not score and gets out when the team needs him. I did not see the match live but in the highlights, that was an awful shot.

Saha has now played 38 test matches, Tim Paine has played 31 and has more runs compared to him. Saha's last two outings with India against Bangladesh was piss poor having scored only a 17* and 12. Forget about those numbers, Saha has played 8 matches in Australia scoring 294 runs has taken 19 catches and had 1 stumping. Compare this Rishabh, he has played 4 tests in Australia has scored 350 runs and has taken 20 catches. I know Saha had a 100 ball 50 in the practice match, but I do not understand the obsession with him. At his best he is still a mediocre wicket keeping batsman and we have plenty of those in domestic circuit as well.

If we win this series or even a match, its going to be our bowling that will help us win that match. I was a bit skeptical since our bowling has not been performing its best but thats how spoiled we all are. In tests, our bowling has done more compared to our batting in tests that we actually win.

Our fielding was absolute disaster. Dropping as many as 8 catches in a match which will be a tight one as this is not acceptable. Imagine leading by 100+ had we not dropped Marcus and Tim. I feel we are slight ahead but we need a solid innings from Mayank and Puji.

On Shaw, he has to drop himself. He needs to understand that he is not at his best and is not contributing anything to the team. Go back, play some first class, A games, get into a rhytm, sort out your weakness and come back stronger. I am sorry but he has to be dropped.

We need atleast 250-300 runs in second innings and give our bowlers something to defend at.
