Where did you get 8 wickets for Steyn and 62 for Khan or 54 for Aamer? From jan to jan the numbers are different.

The way Amla bats ins ODIs is a anchor man type opener like what Dippenaar, Kirsten used to do for SA. He has showed no evidcene that he can step it @ SR over 100.

Out of all the countries that he has played more than one ODI Amlas lowest strike rate is 75 against Australia. 93 vs Bangladesh, 84 vs England, 97 vs India, 105 vs Pakistan, 101 vs WI, 103 vs Zimbabwe.

Don't think they're close at all tbh. They're close this year but that's only by looking at this year in isolation. Steyn wins hands down otherwise but that is in no way downplaying Zaheer's achievements. Steyn had a shocker of a series (average wise) in UAE because the pitches were so flat that even an Indian groundsman would be proud of them. That would have lowered his average a fair bit and too be honest, there wasn't much he or even Zaheer could do on those wickets. Very good effort from Zaheer though. He's a world class bowler and has lead our attack brilliantly.

Average 46.3 and strike rate 83.0.

Without that series his numbers are even more incredible.
9 matches, 54 wickets, average 18.6, strike rate 34.1

Those stats make me sort of sad because of how well Amir did. I can't help but feel that cricket lost a potential great and that too not to injuries or anything legitimate, but spot fixing. *sigh*

Exactly. SRs which if he replicates in T20s, he wil become SAs version of Michael Clarke.

South Africa have only themselves to blame for throwing this game away. If they had batted even a little bit decently in the 1st innings it would have been another easy victory.

Also this series has shown how imperative UDRS is.

Very happy with this win. Another Very Very Special innings was the difference once again. Laxman is the unsung hero of Indian cricket, moreso than even Rahul Dravid.

What can I say about Zak? 6 crucial wickets, an amazing partnership with Laxman with the bat... he is as important to the team as Tendulkar is. We seem to rise as a unit when he is on the field. Probably does more of a captaincy role than Dhoni tbh.

Meh, anyone can beat South Africa :p Everyone knows the real number 1 team is England anyway, just for the fact that the team did the Sprinkler dance to celebrate winning. TBF, India played well and proved me wrong (I'm not delusional I will admit when I'm wrong ;))

What I am looking forward to seeing though is India in England. Whoever wins that I think has a good unofficial claim (or official in India's case :p) to being number 1.

Now that England have beaten Australia twice, I am seriously looking forward to our tour to England this coming year. Will be a cracker!

Damn sohum, looks like the prediction I made before the series started is on track. Although India didn't destroy South Africa as I said they would, they did still win fairly comfortably. Hopefully my last prediction that South Africa would win the last test will be wrong though.

You said India will destroy South Africa at Durban which didnt happen (although we won comfortably). Hope thats a precursor that your last prediction of SA winning the last test doesnt come out true.:D

Sreesatnh & Ishant migh lack venom. But Zaheer is proven flat track bowler, with his mastery of reverse swing.

Steyn/Morkel will still be able to bowl well. But as India showed in the 2nd innings @ Centurion. On such a surface, their batting will be able to stand up more on such a surface.

The Sehwag will continue to be nullfied on a seaming wicket. Quoting his ODI form in ODI series in NZ in 2002 to show he play the moving ball in tests doesn't make any sense. Esepcially when he has consistent test career of failures/struggles on pace bowler friendly pitches.

Capetown last year vs ENG was seamer friendly for 1st 3 days then flattened out.

You're right. We didnt have Zaheer at Centurion which made a big difference.

SA should realize that their best chance of beating India is on a flat track. We saw how helpless our attack was at Centurion when it was flat.

Sa will want a quick track with good bounce but not a green track. a Green track brings the indian seamers into it while a quick bouncy track favors the real quick bowlers which only SA has 2 in this series.

As for the team. There are 3 question mark areas. Peterson and Prince both haven't done enough to really solidify their spots but they will probably keep their spot. If I were selectors I would give alviro one more game but I would pick JP ahead of prince.

On the bowling front I would consider parnell(if he has recovered from his chicken poks) or mcclaren ahead of tsotsobe if the pitch isn't a green seamer at newlands. Both are better bowlers in those conditions and are better batsmen by quite a distance.

As for the spinner maybe we could try botha. Won't make much of a difference its pretty much the same. Not many option out there that are ready.

Mark, you need to take some lessons from Tom.

South Africa may have won if they batted better in their first innings, but to pretend that it would be easy given what happened in this game is a little insulting.

Yup, that's pretty much what I deducted on a previous page, as well. Ishant is really the only guy who can hit the deck and he's been out of sorts.

Why do you expect replication?

Because he has shown no evidence during his ODI revival that has the ability to move to 2nd gear in his batting. He has simply shown he is an old fashion achor man ODI opener.

Plus he hasn't played a T20 internationally or domestically since March 2009, to maybe have an excuse that they have seen him in T20s recent. So they are picking him for T20 based on his current ODI form, which isn't very wise.

Indeed even if SA had been even on 1st inning with IND. SA would have won by maybe by 2-3 wickets or IND could have won by 10-20 runs. Either way it would have been an even test.

Firstly as we both know. If outside influenced weren't still affecting how SA pick their sides. SA could certainly have a 3rd real quick bowler in De Wet to support Steyn/Morkel.

Interesting point of A Peterson. He has had steady but unspectacular 1st year in international cricket. But again if the SA selectors had the freedom to always select their best possible sides, one wonder if a man like Jacques Rudolph couldn't be picked.

Mclaren would also be a good selection. SA tail looks a bit long indeed, Steyn batting a postion too high @ # 9.

Also what do you think about Boucher's position in the team. Is he still safe in your view. Or is someone like Heino Kuhn pretty close to taking over from him soon?

Based on this the best SA could probably be:

Smith
Rudolph
Amla
Kallis
De Villiers
Dumminy
Boucher
McLaren
Steyn
Morkel
De Wet

On a real greentop for the final test, this team would be lethal especially in the bowling.

^Yeah foget harris and Tsotsobe. Bring in the quickest bowlers you can find in South Africa and I am sure SA can revive their fortunes.

I thought Ashwell Prince was the only batsman in the second innings to show determination and grit. It'd be a bit unfair to drop him after that performance. Although if you plan on dropping Harris for de Wet/McLaren, then you can use the spinning option that Duminy provides, in order to keep the over rate going and if the pacers need a breather.

Didn't know Jacques Rudolph was an opener. I always thought he was a middle order bat. I remember at the beginning of his test career he was batting at 3 or 4.

Guys watch the highlights, and eventhough India had the rub of the green going their way throughout the test match, SA too benefited slightly from three 50-50 decisions.

1) Ashwell Prince, highest scorer for SA in 2nd innings, on 0 was not given out lbw, but that in highlights was hitting in line going on to hit the stumps. (Fair decision as bat was very close, but slow-mo shows pad first)

2) Paul Harris also got the benefit of a very close call against Bhajji. Again very close call but was pad first.

3) Luckily Morkel's innings didn't last long after a controversial no-ball called when caught of bowling of Ishant. Replays showed the foot landed behind the line only to slide when bowl was released.

Only reason i mentioned these above, is because the howlers or more obvious wrong decisions given against SA, might completely overshadw 3 times they had lucky repreives.
