What evening that was. The best game of the tournament followed by the second or third best. Although the second match went down to the penultimate ball; there's nothing like watching Lucky Lockdown Lunatics implode.
Thunder limped their way to 158 from their 20 overs. Slipping from 53/1 to 78/5 during overs 7-10. Alastair Cook bounded to the crease for the Lucky Lockdown Lunatics. He started cut and flick and blasting like he was Chris Gayle. He put on 44 with Tom Bruce and after ten overs, at the crease with David Miller, the Lunatics were 87/1. Then things went awry. Chris Green and Shoaib Malik picked up 3 quick ones. Then Adam Zampa another three quick ones. From a position of absolute dominance they were 135/8, need 24 from 24 balls. Despite the efforts of Mark Wood it was a bridge too far. Jack Leach the last man out. Thrilling stuff!
Thunder are top of Group B. Although Gilly's Grubs and Fire In Babylon meet in a crucial game tomorrow. The Lunatics join Neptune Gaming in the dustbin. No wins. No points. No good.
I didn't think we'd see anything close from the next match, but it was another crackers. Blocktown, despite some questionable play from Guptill, got up to a competitive 180/1 in their innings. For much of their innings the Spartans made it look an easily chaseable total. Paul Stirling notched up his third 50 in a row (@sonimrajk would you like to trade for Colin Ingram?). Then a collapse of sorts occured. fFrom 127/3 to 167/7 and all of a sudden 20 from 12 gave us a real nail baiter. However, despite his three wickets, Parvez Rasool couldn't defend 13 from his last over, courtesy of some lovely work through the third man region by Washington Sundar. I think Spartans have been practicing that shot because they played it all the bloody time. There was a super catch to dimiss Kehar Jadhav in there though, a real moment of magic.
Spartans join Blocktown on 9 points. Not enough to guarantee either of them qualification. San Francisco Suckers v Twelve Fine Legs means both these teams can still get to at least 9 points (San Fran still up to 12).
Martin Guptill tops the run scoring charts on 249. Paul Stirling is second on 236. Jason Roy, Kusal Perera and Tom Bruce make up the top five.
Mark Wood goes to eight wickets, second place on his own, behind Jasprit Bumrah with 9. Zampa and Mooen Ali join McBrine, Narine, Shadab Khan and Santer on 7 wickets.
