Matthew Hayden muscles the ball

Magnificent half-centuries from the Australian duo of Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden propelled Chennai Super Kings to a defendable total and a miserly three-wicket spell from Sudeep Tyagi then choked the life out of the Bangalore Royal Challengers' chase as they romped to a facile 26-run victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Royal Challengers had started superbly, with Jacques Kallis producing an impeccable spell of 2 for 13 in his four overs, but their subsequent nightmare was best summed up when the rest of the bowlers were smashed all over the ground and went for more than 7 runs per over.

An improved Chennai performance after a disappointing loss in their previous game. The RCB openers were up for the chase but the middleorder didnt do anything worth mentioning

Hayden and Hussey are to credit for this win. Well played!!!

Kings crush woeful Royals

Mahela Jayawardene scored a quickfire 50

Kings XI Punjab showed no mercy as they crushed season one champions Rajasthan Royals by 80 runs in the nineteenth match of the season at the PCA Stadium after piling up a huge total on the board. Mahela Jayawardene and Mohammad Kaif blitzed the hapless attack after the early momentum was created by Ravi Bopara and they reached 5 for 178. Two wickets in the four two overs of Rajasthan Royals' chase - including Yusuf Pathan for just one - ended the contest apart from a late flourish by Siddhart Trivedi.

Nice performance their by Kings XI Punjab. Jayawardene did well to make sure his team makes a big score and a poor performance from Rajasthan Royals.

Balaji celebrates after picking the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar

Chennai Super Kings' bowlers, led by the unhittable pace of Lakshmipathy Balaji, pulled an improbable victory out of the jaws of defeat as they successfully defended a meagre target of 113 and snuck home by a solitary run in a scrappy but compelling battle at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

At the halfway mark of the match, it seemed there could be only one winner, after Chennai Super Kings had squandered a platform of 70 for 1 after their 12 overs to dribble to a disappointing 20-over total of 113 for 5. But Mumbai Indians' response never emerged from second gear. A run-a-ball 54 from Ajinkya Rahane after a poor start set the platform, but his team-mates failed to dive in, and bizarrely they ran out of steam with three wickets still standing.

The bulk of the credit belonged to Balaji, who put a string of recent poor run behind him to concede a mere 13 runs from his four overs, as well as capturing three of Mumbai Indians' dangermen. Tendulkar was caught at cover for a duck in the first over, while JP Duminy swished flat-footedly and was given leg before for a duck of the first ball, and finally Abhsihek Nayar took ten balls to give a simple catch to Jacob Oram at midwicket of Balaji and walked back with a duck in front of his name on the scoreboard.

Rahane had begun his innings with a bang, cracking three fours from his first ten deliveries as he tried to steady the innings. But at the other end, his support was in short supply. Chandan Madan miscued Sudeep Tyagi to mid-on for 6 before Dwayne Bravo was caught at mid-off of Sudeep Tyagi again, for 6, and at the end of the 8th over, Mumbai Indians were in deep trouble at 38 for 4.

With the pitch slowing up, the run-rate went with it, and Chennai Super Kings' slower bowlers took full advantage. Napier and Rahane added 23 for the fifth wicket in 11 overs, as Muralitharan, Balaji and Jacob Oram took the pace off the ball to tormenting effect, and by the time Abhishek Nayar arrived to reinject some urgency, the requirement more than run-a-ball.

The final scoreline was misleadingly tight. Mumbai Indians failed to hit a single six in their innings, and they would not have come close had it not been for a freakish yorker from Gony that bounced out of a foothole and over the keeper's head for four byes in the penultimate over. With ten needed from six balls, and with Harbhajan Singh in good batting form kept the fans alive, but Murali Vijay surprising was given the last over by MS Dhoni and he didnt disappoint his skipper.

Vijay got the all-important wicket of Harbhajan Singh with three ball remaining. Mumbai Indians needed 10 runs of the last three balls and Dhawal Kulkarni smashed two boundaries of his first two balls to swing the match in Mumbai Indians' favour. But a brilliant last ball yorker by the offspinner restricted the Mumbai Indians from taking any runs of the last ball.

It was a disappointing denouement for Mumbai Indians, as Chennai Super Kings successfully defended the lowest winning total in this season. Mumbai Indians' spin bowling of Harbhajan Singh and JP Duminy and seam of Dhawal Kulkarni, combined together conceded 76 runs in their 10 overs picking up just three wickets was the main reason for their defeat.

Fresh from their 26-run victory over Bangalore Royal Challengers in their previous game in Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings seemed to have continued in the same vein when Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina cruised to 72 for 1 in the 12th over after losing Murali Vijay early in second over. Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga both started off brilliantly, conceding just 32 runs from their combined 8 overs and picking up the wicket of Murali Vijay.

But as Sachin Tendulkar gave the ball to his spinners, the momentum started to shift. Harbhajan's first over went for nine runs, and from the start of the very next over, Hayden and Raina started shifting gears and taking the game to the bowlers. But after four overs of domination by Chennai, Harbhajan Singh picked up the important wicket of the inform Matthew Hayden for 34. Incoming Michael Hussey, in a hurry to impose himself, then mistimed a drive at Duminy only to be caught by Napier for 6 of 7 balls.

Three runs later Dhoni called Raina through for a quick single as Dwayne Bravo hurtled to short midwicket to field. The shy beat Raina's lunch by a fraction of an inch and Raina had to depart for a 54-ball 48. Dhawal Kulkarni chimed in with the biggest wicket of the lot as Dhoni played all around a full-length delivery and was leg before for 6 from 7. At 109 for 5 in the last over, their momentum had well and truly evaporated.

Subramanium Badrinath(10 n.o) and Jacob Oram(8 n.o) added a couple of boundaries towards the end of the innings only to make the score a bit more decent as Mumbai Indians completed a fine effort in the field. It was not, however, good enough to win them the game.

Balaji was superb. Mumbai Indians need to get out of this slump quickly so their path to the semis isnt troubled
