New Zealand in Australia Nov-Dec 2008 Feb 2009

What I think Bracken should have done on the last ball is bowl a short one. More of a chance than bowling a yorker because it would be the last thing Vettori would be expecting.

Katich and Paine should be given an opportunity now. Haddin needs to be atleast punished for one game. You can't do that. With Marsh out Hopes can maybe be pushed up to open with Katich...

Ryder is returning home :( Huge blow! He wasn't responding well enough to treatment.

Australia are really falling big now. They are being embarassed right now. Not that mind it!:D

Hope their system can keep them away from falling like the Windies.

I'm having a good summer picking our new guys. First picked Warner and then suggested Ferguson and Voges.

Our squad for the next 2 matches:

M. Hussey (vc) WA
N. Bracken NSW
C. Ferguson SA
B. Haddin NSW
B. Hilfenhaus TAS
J. Hopes QLD
D. Hussey VIC
M. Johnson WA
S. Tait SA
D. Warner NSW
C. White VIC
A. Voges WA

I still don't get why Ponting is resting himself, I believe the captain should always be playing if his side is struggling for form.

anyway I guess White and Hilfenhaus will probably come in for Australia, with Hopes or M.Hussey opening the batting for the match on Friday.

I don't know what we will do with our side but I hope both Voges and Ferguson get a game at least. I suspect Clarke or Mike Hussey will open with Warner as a steady influence for him, they could go all out attack with him and Haddin together though.

Though Kiwis won yesterday, Australia is still the better team and deserved to win the match yesterday. When compared to the way SA played Australia, it was below par performance from Kiwis that they got a win somehow.

Though I believed that NewZealand(During Fleming's period) always have greater potential to win Aussies, but with the way they played cricket yesterday I am completely disappointed with the way they chased such a small target.. Infact, it was a very very poor batting gameplay which the Kiwis captain can't be happy about it...

SA won Aussies with dominance... Kiwis won yesterday's match with lots and lots of unnecessary struggles.

I think thats a good point, NZ weren't exactly brilliant yesterday either, taking 50 overs to chase down what was a fairly low target. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the series pans out because they wont win by making that sort of target every game. I just can't see NZ chasing down a score of 250+ which Australia are capable of setting.

As I said elsewhere Australia lost 5 in a row inluding 3 to NZ before the 07 World Cup, they can bounce back

Is there a reason the selectors won't pick a real opener??

First it's Warner - a risky selection based on a handful of games. Now our selectors pick Ferguson and Voges - we have too many middle order batsmen in the squad already.

Hughes and Katich would have been obvious picks - openers in fine form, but NO we are going to screw around and promote Hopes/Haddin/M.Clarke/M.Hussey. Hopes is the only one of those 4 who will probably play better as an opener, the others will perform better down lower. But Hopes is not a good enough player to promote from 8 to 1. Might as well open with Mitch Johnson

And Dave Warner is a total punt as far as I can see. He's the new Gilly - scores big every 10th game but otherwise is crap. At least Gilly was a great team player, and keep wickets well. Imagine Hopes and Warner as our openers and you'd have to have probably the worst opening combo in world cricket.

We need Shane Watson back badly. First as an opener and second as a 5th bowler. Both those problems have been big for us this summer.

Excuse me? Our bowling and fielding was top notch. The batting is the only thing which wasn't great, but they got the job done in the end. It doesn't help when you lose McCullum second ball to an Edge Before Wicket and Broom who actually looked really good to Haddin's illegal keeping. I do agree with you though, we messed it up at the start. I can see what they were trying to do, keep wickets in hand, but the best way to do that is to play normally. The only way you lose a bunch of wickets is by playing heaps of shots or else defending everything and putting pressure on yourself.

And saying Australia deserved to win after the Haddin dismissal is a complete joke. Only one side deserved to win that game and it was us. We out fielded and out bowled them. The batting was poor by both sides.

As for the Aussie side i'm shocked they didn't pick Katich or Hughes or even both, but as an NZ supporter I don't care.

Im over these stupid selections. Get Dave Hussey out, White out. bring in Katich and Hughes. We wont win by picking out of form rookies. You should pick your best in form players.

Callum Ferguson is probably one of the first guy who's come in on pretty substantial form; having just scored a second hundred in the Shield, he has also produced an 83 ball hundred in the FR Cup and is clearly in the form of his short career. It's a little bit of a surprise pick, but he's the sort of player who has a very apparent ability to play shots and has been earmarked as a future player for some time.

Voges has under-performed in the Sheffield Shield, but he has nevertheless continued to produce in the FR Cup. Very much a one day specialist, his one day record is nothing less than impressive and far outweighs his first class record.

As Sifter noted, the question is really whether that makes for a good team or not. With Ponting rested (compulsorily, I might add) and Marsh injured, the top order is gutted. Have they made a few bold decisions too many?

I don't see any problem in the 2 selections but totally agree that we should have brought in an opener. What better chance to see what other guys can do as lately Marsh hasn't been as solid. This clearly shows they still see Marsh and Watson as the openers and thus just want make shift ones until they return.

Looking at our squad I'm positive either M Hussey or Clarke will open with Warner although Hopes could be a chance as he does seem to have a bit more control than Haddin.

I would try:
Hopes/Haddin
Warner
Hussey
Clarke
Voges/Ferguson
Hussey
Haddin/Hopes
Johnson
Bracken
Hilfenhaus
Tait

Or if we are keeping Hopes as 4th bowler then
Hopes/Haddin
Warner
Hussey
Clarke
Voges/Ferguson
Hussey
Haddin/Hopes
White
Johnson
Bracken
Tait/Hilfenhaus

Can't see them going with both Voges and Ferguson although I would be crazy enough to get them both in.
