Bond could be in line for Test comeback

Cricinfo - Bond could be in line for Test comeback

Shane Bond, Daryl Tuffey and Lou Vincent could all be playing for New Zealand again as early as August after the New Zealand Herald reported that the trio are about to sever their ties with the rebel ICL.

Tuffey has been offered a termination and after consulting with lawyers has accepted it. The paper reports that Vincent has also quit, and while it is expected Bond will do the same, it says that might take longer in his case.

Heath Mills, the head of the NZ Players' Association, said scrapping the existing contracts would probably mean the three would not get what was owed to them, but he added that there was no guarantee there would be another season of ICL anyway.

Bond was non committal, but said that he "hoped something will happen soon," adding: "My training is going really well and I want to get back into it."

With Bond and Tuffey back we could be in with a chance.

Vincent too could be helpful. I still recall his debutant century so he does have the potential. Lay off from test cricket, hunger, need to prove himself, etc. could be the winning factors NZ obtain from the ICL trio. Have NZ announced a squad? Hmmm considering the hostile situation would SL move the series to Sharjah or even India? I don't think the security has come up yet.

Vincent didn't play a single match this NZ domestic season, I don't know if he should be in the fold. Tuffey should be in the team and Bond should be in the ODIs

Srilanka will surely win the series very easily and convincingly.

NZ , i dont think they can handle spin of MM and ajantha mendis.

Well I agree with you that Sri Lanka should win the series, but New Zealand should still put up a fight. Where not that bad.

I was thinking that since we seem to have so many New Zealand supporters on PC, we should each try and pick our Test XI for this tour. Since there is quite a long time until the tour starts we should just start of with picking one position at a time. Obviously some picks pick themselves, but this should be interesting.

I?ll start by throwing a few openers names out there:

Martin Guptill
Tim McIntosh
Aaron Redmond
B.J Watling
Jamie How

Those five are really our only options, can't really see Matthew Bell making the team again. So who would you pick from that lot?

Not on your list but if Vincent is around I would consider him even though he is better down the order. Redmond, McIntosh and How will never be good enough in tests, Watling is an unknown but I would like some experience up the top. Other than that Guptill would be my choice to open with him.

I can?t see our selectors taking McIntosh over for this tour at all. He has looked horrible against spin if he has managed to last that long and he is going to face plenty of it over there. Guptill is pretty much a certainty to play so we would only be looking for one other opener. What I liked about Redmond though was that he was actually improving, and from the time I?ve seen him play he is able to play spin pretty well. I know Watling is rated highly by quite a few people, but they won?t give him his debut over there.

Shane Bond could be back wearing New Zealand colours sooner than expected.

The side to tour Sri Lanka will be named at the end of the week and the bush telegraph suggests a spot will be left open for Bond in the one-day side provided he looks up to speed on a New Zealand A tour to India which pretty much runs concurrently.

If Bond looks sharp enough in the early stages of the A tour he will then make the 75-minute flight from Chennai to Colombo for the five-match one-day leg.

The Canterbury fast bowler has requested he not be considered for the test leg of the tour to Sri Lanka because he has been off the scene for two years because of his link with the rebel Indian Cricket League.

So as expected Bond will not be playing in the test matches.

Possible test squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Ross Taylor, Jesse Ryder, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum, Jeetan Patel, Iain O'Brien, Chris Martin, Aaron Redmond, Grant Elliott, Gareth Hopkins, James Franklin or Kyle Mills.

Hopkins is a must, McCullum has been very injury prone as of late. Broom will go I'm fairly certain he will.

Oram, Mills and Redmond shouldn't be anywhere near the test team at the moment. If it wasn't for the contract Hopkins wouldn't be going either. I agree that Broom should tour he's more of a test specialist than he is a limited overs batsman and his form in the longer game warrants a test spot. I'll throw out a wildcard and say that Tarun Nethula should be in the side, because he's clearly the only good 4th or 5th day spinner in the country.

Disappointed not to see Bond in the test team but I guess that was to be expected. I hope they go for Tuffey but since he didn't get a contract I doubt that will happen either.

His playing in the Surrey League for Wimbledon and he is going pretty well, he took a 6fer a couple of weeks ago. But I still feel as though he has a lot more development ahead of him before he plays for New Zealand. I would love to see a Leggie play but it's far to early for Nethula.
