Daniel Vettori had won the toss and selected to bat first...Michael Papps and Stephen Fleming opened the batting for the Kiwis...For Australia is their inform bowler Brett Lee was to ball the first over...Lee was able to get the swing on the ball as he troubled Fleming....Stuart Clark shared the new ball with Brett Lee...Stuart Clark was able to bit the outside edge of Papps but then Papps pulled him away for a huge six...It was the first boundary of the match...Papps was able to keep strike...Lee continued to trouble Papps and was a bit to unlucky...but soon in the same over he got the nick from the outside edge of Papps bat and it was easily caught by Gilly....New Zealand lost their first wicket for the score of 13....Papps was out for 8 runs...

Ross Taylor came into bat...He and Fleming had to play well and carefully see of the new ball...Both Taylor and Fleming were unable to read Lee well but they had targeted Clark as they easily rotated the strike...The running between the wickets of the two batsmen were superb as they converted the twos into threes...Brett Lee was just hitting the right spots with very less luck...Clark was bowling good length...he was pitching the balls in the same area again and again and forcing the batsmen to make a mistake...But Fleming and Taylor played really carefully ...Soon Pontiny made a surprised bowling change as he gave the ball to the debutant Cameron White...White was able to get some pace and turn on the ball...Taylor smashed a great looking cover drive for 4 of the bowling of White...While Fleming played a another cover drive for 4 of Brett Lee...Taylor and Fleming kept on taking the ones and twos...

Ponting encourages his bowlers​

It wasn't the day of Brett Lee...He was trying everything out with very less luck...While on the other side Taylor and Fleming were making huge partnership between them...Fleming played some careful strokes when he reached the 40s...White was very economical...He was having a very decent debut...Fleming and Taylor kept one rotating the strike...and were not giving the bowler to settle to a particular batsmen....Ponting needed one more wicket to break the partnership at the moment...Soon Fleming reached his 50 with a beautiful on drive of White for 4...The crowd stood up to congratulate him for his steady and invaluable innings...Kiwis went in for lunch at 112/1 ...the partnership between Taylor and Fleming was now 99 runs...

Phillips Lunch Time Talk...​

Tony Grieg : Welcome back everyone to the Lunch Time Show...With me I have the two great batsmen of all time...Martin Crowe and Geoff Boycott...In this first session we were able to see some great batting display by the Kiwis...Especially Stephen Fleming he just was a pleasure to watch ....Are you pleased with the way the Kiwis have batted , Martin??

Martin Crowe : Yes , of course they have dominated the first session completely...There was was an early breakthrough but then Taylor and Fleming have played really well to stabilize the innings...they also attacked the bowlers and were really great in converting one into twos and twos into threes...Fleming was really watchful when he played White but the way he played Clark and Lee was of high quality...I would not like to any credit from Taylor he has plagued some quality cricket to...he has rotated the strike well with Fleming and he also played some great shots...his cover drive to Brett Lee was just outstanding to watch....with the innings he played i think he has just fixed his place in the side....While Flemings innings he has scored everywhere especially on the leg side....Fleming's innings was of high class....I think with this innings he has answered his critics...And i hope that they both convert these scores into huge hundreds....

Tony Grieg : Thanks Martin...Geoffrey really upset with the way Aussies Bowlers have performed in this session???

Geoffrey Boycott : Yes , I am very upset the way Aussies have bowled in this first session....Theyfrom the Kiwi batsmen...they have played really well and thats why t were just outplayed by the Kiwis in the first session...I should take no credit he Aussies bowling attack is looking not up to the mark...I am very unhappy the way Ponting has rotated his bowlers....Lee has done the most of the bowling along with White...and then comes Clark...Johnson has not been given the ball and this has surprised me a lot....Stuart Clark has been hitting the balls in the same areas and thats why he has been to predictable , White has done really well on his debut...he has bowled in the right areas and has troubled both batsmen...While Lee has been excellent today so far...He has just pitched the ball on or just wide of the off stump...If you see his pitch map he has gone for runs when he tries to pitch it way outside the off stump...One or two quick wickets over here will just turn the match.....
