Flintoff helps calm things down for England

The new day brought new hopes for English fans as Vaughan and Flintoff started a great partnership between them. Vaughan especially seemed unstoppable, that is until he edged a swinging delivery from Sami back to Nazir ending a 65 run partnership.

But Flintoff picked up where Vaughan left off and started hitting some beautiful shots and soared past 50 runs in no time. With the keeper batting at the other end, Flintoff was looking to put on another big inning for England by the time lunch rolled along.

Can Flintoff score a second century in the same match and save England from defeat?

England 154/5 (40 overs) - Lunch (Day 4)
A. Flintoff 54*(85) | G. Jones 13*(23)
England lead by 14 runs

It could yes, but you gotta remember England still have to bat through 5 hours in Day 4, and even if they last through the whole day, Pakistan still have a whole day to chase the target. I think Pakistan are still very much in control of this match. But getting Flintoff out is a priority.

Flintoff and Jones in control

After 27 very boring overs, English fans couldn't be happier. England have managed not to lose any more wickets so far, even though there were some close calls with edges flying past the fielders. Between lunch and tea, Flintoff and Jones scored just 78 runs, but more importantly they played some smart cricket and held on to their wickets.

Here are the stats from the inning so far:

England 232/5 (67 overs) - Tea (Day 4)
A. Flintoff 87*(162) | G. Jones 46*(108)
England lead by 92 runs

Amir strikes for Pakistan but Flintoff holds on

After tea break, Flintoff and Jones played pretty much the same kind of boring cricket that they had been playing for the past few hours, but this boring cricket might just save England from another defeat. Both batsmen played very cautiously and saved their wickets. Jones was able to reach his half-century and Flintoff was able to reach his second ton of the match.

In the last few overs of the day, Pakistan was finally able to make a breakthrough as Amir struck in back-to-back overs. First to go was Jones who edged one back to Nazir for an easy catch thus ending a 187-run partnership.

Next to go was Giles who popped one up in the air while defending and Akhtar took an easy catch lowering England to 303/7. England finished Day 4 at the score of 309 runs with three wickets in hand.

England 309/7 (94 overs) - Stumps (Day 4)
A. Flintoff 131*(240) | M. Hoggard 1*(9)
England lead by 169 runs

England 377 all out

The new day started with Flintoff scoring some rather quick runs off of the Pakistani bowlers with Hoggard on the other end blocking every delivery. The seemingly unstoppable Flintoff went past 150 without a problem. It was Saqlain who was finally able to trick the batsman into hitting one of his off-spinners back to him in his hands. Flintoff had made 162 runs by this time.

At this time, Pakistan needed to take the last of the wickets quick so they could have a chance of chasing the target. But thanks to some great defensive batting from the tail-enders, all of the Pakistanis' hopes of a win were crushed. Hoggard and Harmison, the new man in, batted through lunch and scored only two runs. Amir was finally able to get an edge out of Harmison, who was caught behind after scoring one run.

With Anderson and Hoggard left to bat now, the bowlers thought they would be a piece of cake to get rid of, but Hoggard showed just how much he could do with that bat of his. He hit the bowlers 5 boundaries before finally popping one up in the air in an attempt to hook on one of Amir's bouncers.

With less than three hours of play left in the fifth day and seeing as how Pakistan have that much time to chase 238 runs, I think it is safe to say that a draw is imminent.

England 377 a/o (131.2 overs)
A. Flintoff 162 (280) | G. Jones 74 (176) | M. Amir 23.2-4-76-4
Pakistan require 238 runs to win

Update - Pakistan 66/2 (10 overs)

Just an update....

Pakistan have started playing their second inning. They lost both of their openers to Hoggard's bowling before even three overs were up. But thanks to some quick fire batting from Amir and Inzi, Pakistan are now 66/2 after just 10 overs. This partnership is looking very dangerous and needs to be broken, otherwise all of England's efforts so far will have been in vain.

Stay tuned, I'll update this every ten overs.

Update - Pakistan 113/4 (20 overs)

The English bowlers have managed to slow Pakistan down just slightly in the past 10 overs. England were able to get rid of Inzamam in the 11th over, but that didn't slow things down any since Amir and Youhana were now on strike. But Amir got out in the 20th over leaving Pakistan 113/4.

There's still more than an hour and a half worth of play left and Pakistan will do their best to score another 125 runs to win this match.

More updates will follow.....

Update - Pakistan 143/6 (30 overs)

After losing Amir Pakistan have slowed down quite a bit. The match that Pakistanis at one point were on top of, seems to be running away from them. Pakistan have scored just 30 runs in the past 10 overs and lost two wickets in the process, those of Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal. Youhana is still batting, but from the looks of it, Pakistan will look for a draw today instead of a series win.

Pakistan are now 143/6 in 10 overs with Youhana and Saqlain now batting. Pakistan need 95 runs to win with less than an hour of play left.

Update - Pakistan 161/9 (40 overs)

Pakistan's plan to try and chase the target of 238 by scoring some quick runs has terribly backfired on them. Pakistan have now lost 9 wickets and are now depending on their tail-enders to get them through the inning. There are less than 15 minutes left in the Day and Danish Kaneria has just walked in to bat.

English bowlers have bowled some great spells so far today, let's see if their swinging yorkers can get them a win here.
