It does not have to have a religious meaning behind it though. A wretch could have much more contemporary meaning, like depression or drug abuse etc. That's what is so beautiful about that song, it fits to any occasion.
Its a christian hymn originally, but I didn't realise that it has been used for secular purposes. The word "wretch" can be replaced, and has been, thankfully.
It still is a Christian hymm, I just feel it can apply to anyone in any situation. It can even apply to someone who struggles to let his religion go and once he has he is no longer blind
