Random Country Test Draft -- DONE. Time for comments/discussion

We already know who you are going to pick and we know that Dutchy cannot go for him since he is an opener so you could always PM me who you are going to pick and I could make it for you.

Or I'll just make the pick now, write up and all? Post it here then, and go to bed.

Well, there is the chance that dutchad might move Jayasuriya down the order and pick your man...

Alright. If Dutch gets his in soon I can do mine and finish this off.

Okay, just before I go to bed: I will just name him and do a more respectful profile of him tomorrow: I know this choice may raise a few eyebrows but you will struggle to find a more elegant batsman than this man and he slots beautifully into the umber 5 position and complements my line-up well: Sirs, I present to you the final piece of my wonderful team (maybe not the strongest in all aspects but certainly right up there): Mr D I Gower!

See you lot tomorrow. Thanks for asking me to take part and I look forward to doing this again with you gentleman!:)

The Dutchad All Time Flipping Brilliant Select XI

Edit: Nevermind. I pick Herbert Sutcliffe. Write up in a moment.

Herbert Sutcliffe

100115.jpg

Along with Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe formed one of the most potent opening partnerships in Test Match history. A legend of the game, Herbert's main strength was his immense powers of concentration and courage. This was backed up by a beautiful technique, meaning he was capable of and scoring rapidly when needed.

In a decade of Test match cricket and 26 years of FC cricket, Sutcliffe dominated bowling attacks all over the world, and was well liked and respected by all. At his peak, he was second to no one, not even Hobbs.

He finished his Test career with the highest batting average for anyone to have played atleast 20 innings for England, and in the all-time records his average of 60.73 is only second to Don Bradman. He had 16 test centuries and 23 fifties opening the batting, with a highest of 194, while he amassed 50,670 runs, 151 tons and 230 fifties in FC cricket, with a highest of 313. His achievements and feats in FC cricket are too numerous to list, and he was the Wisden Cricketer of The Year for 1920.

Well, there goes Dan's pick. I reckon Zorax should have let Dan have him since he's already screwed up his team :p. KP still has a chance of building a great team.

I like my team!

1. Herbert Sutcliffe
2. Stewie Dempster
3. Jacques Kallis
4. George Headley
5. Keith Miller (*)
6. Archie Jackson
7. Kapil Dev
8. Prasanna Jayawardene (+)
9. Malcom Marshall
10. Fazal Mahmood
11. Hedley Verity

Miller gets to be captain as he was highly successful at domestic level. Never got to captain Australia as Don Bradman had some issues with him (mainly with his attitude that cricket was just a game).

4 brilliant fast bowlers, 1 of the finest spinners to have played the game, and Jacques Kallis for the bowling attack. The Black Bradman, The Bradman who could have been, and the Man-With-The-Highest-Average-After-Bradman in my batting lineup. Jacques Kallis at 3 is one of the finest batsmen produce by South Africa, and Dempster one of the finest by NZ. Dev and Miller add to that batting strength, while Prasanna, Marshall and Verity could all bat a bit, and Fazal Mahmood had an FC hundred to his name! And in Prasanna is one of the finest glovemen to have played the game.

I like it. Only thing I would change is either picking someone else for Kallis -his bowling is useless now- or picking a batsman instead of Fazal Mahmood/Keith Miller and going with Kallis as my 4th seamer.

Yep. An excellent team and strong all the way through. I would love to see them play against my lot that as it happens is built up of players from a certain era onwards. I think there are a couple of iffy choices in my team but it would certainly give any team a good challenge. I think I have got a couple of sentimental picks in there and in hindsight could do with a better opening pair.

Bugger it, knew I should have gone for Trumper. Ah well, the bloke I picked is too good not to be picked, and he did open 4 occasions, so he's in.

Ken Barrington

52801761.jpg

One of England's great batsmen of the 60's. Barrington averaged 58.67 in his Test career, amassing 6806 runs and 20 Test centuries. Barrington averaged 77.23 at number 3 in 40 innings, and 78.50 at number 2. Just wishing I picked Trumper or Morris to open now. Oh yeah, and he bowled a bit too.

1. Barry Richards
2. Ken Barrington
3. Neil Harvey
4. Martin Crowe
5. Sir Garfield Sobers
6. Adam Gilchrist +
7. Imran Khan
8. Chaminda Vaas
9. George Lohmann
10. Joel Garner
11. Subhash Gupte

Just open with Gilchrist :)

I reckon Barrington's a steal. Good player and very good outside England too.

Fred Trueman

1st man ever to 300 wickets and finished a career in which he missed many matches with 307 wickets @ 21.57 with a SR of 49.4, Whats even more impressive is his FC record

2304 @18.29 SR 43.2

I was torn between Trueman and a bodyliner pacer who we all should know, L-----d , but I went for Fred because he played a bit more and his FC record is outstanding.

Mark's XI

1) Sir Len Hutton (c)
2) Hanif Mohammad
3) Greg Chappell
4) Everton Weekes
5) Sir Frank Worrell
6) Kumar Sangakarra (wk)
7) Nathan Astle
8) Anil Kumble
9) Dale Steyn
10) Fred Trueman
11) Glenn Mcgrath

Good team as well. Worrell and Astle share 5th bowler duties, good pace attack, and Jumbo's a pretty good spinner. Batting is solid too.

And @KP, Barrington should be able to do the job as an opener. Strong batting, and plenty of bowling, but there is a reliance on Imran and Gilly for runs as the tail is a bit long. Mark's team's tail is long too.

Astle at 7 and Kumble is no mug at 8 either. Steyn hit 70 odd against the Aussies IIRC so i am happy with my tail. Plus my bowlers should restrict any team to a low score to begin with

Well all I needed to complete my team was an opener so I decided to take Geoff Boycott because Zorax was kind enough to take Sutcliffe. Boycott opened the batting in 107 tests and scored 8091 runs at an average of 48.16 including 22 centuries and 42 half centuries. He also had a great First Class average 56.83 scoring over 48000 runs and 151 centuries. I am happy that I got Boycott to open the batting with Hayden. There is no doubt in my mind that they could put on a solid opening stand and make it even easier for a great middle order.
If he hadn't made himself unavailable for 30 Tests in his prime - because, it was thought he felt that he, rather than Mike Denness, should have succeeded Ray Illingworth as captain - he would surely have become the first Englishman to make 10,000 Test runs

1. Geoff Boycott
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Wally Hammond
4. Rahul Dravid
5. Mahela Jayawardene *
6. Clyde Walcott +
7. Richard Hadlee 1
8. Clarrie Grimmett
9. Waqar Younis
10. Allan Donald 2
11. Courtney Walsh
