Shakib - the 5th best spinner in the world?

O no he's not. He's yet to be tested against tough opponents like Australia, India, Pakistan, SA, or England in tough pitches. He has played most of his matches in the subcontinent where all the tracks are spinner friendly pitches.

he did play vs Aus, India, Pakistan, SA, (test + odi) and England (ODI ONLY). and he did just as GREAT as the recent matches. he got wickets every where not just subcontinent, in Caribbean, Aus, NZ and SA.

go check the stats...

dont forget his batting, and the #1 all rounder.

ICC Player Rankings (ODI)

10th in Test

he was 12th before this Tri nation series.

I have checked cricinfo, here's Sakib's test stats in away venues( leaving apart that series against South Africa)

Matches: 2
Wkts: 2
Average:50.50
Best figures:2/44

Here's his ODI stats in away venues:

Matches: 25
Wkts: 24
Average: 40+
Best figures: 3/56

Sakib may be a good bowler BUT he is CERTAINLY NOT the world's 5th best spinner. I again request you guys, please think logically and don't get driven away by your emotions.

why leave out the ones against South Africa?

Well, i think that series was a fluke. Anyway here's his test stats including those played in SA.

Matches: 4
Wkts: 13 (2 in the first 2 tests + 11 in SA)
Avg: 25.38
BF: 6/99 (Remember this is a test match, not an ODI)

He has so far had only one good away series. Compare these stats with Vajji's ,Harris's or Mishra's, do you still think he's the world's 5th best spinner?

I dont think that getting 11 wickets against the top side in the world is a fluke. He did it a series before that against NZ too.

Is he top 5 maybe.

Murli, Vettori, Harbhajan, Mendis and probably Shakib

Didn't you get my point? Till now Sakib has had only one good away series. How come you guys are saying that a player who has had only a one good away series so far the 5th best spinner of the world?

I think Shakib is well on his way to being the world class player Bangladesh have so badly need. His batting is constantly improving and his bowling has been impressive over the past few series.

I consider him to be a top 5 spinner, pretty much following behind the likes of Murali, Mendis, Singh & Vettori.

I've always thought he was a talented cricketer when I saw him in the Champions Trophy a few years ago. He's been a steady middle order player who has scored runs consistently and he's been able to take plus keep the runs down.

He's got a big future and if Bangladesh can find some other good players then they can become a competitive team. They've already started since they only lost the final of the tri-series after Murali's blitz.

Yet you have Mendis as the number 2 spinner in the world after 4 Test matches and his only away test match is against Bangladesh?

Yeah, definitely he's the 5th best, and probably has a reason to be ranked 4th if he continues to perform like this.

Look guys, I'm not saying Sakib's a bad spinner, I admit, he is an amazingly talented guy. But he is just not the world's 5th best.
