The first game of the County Championship season between Warwickshire and Worcestershire. Worcestershire's manager has been inactive of late, and is could be replaced at any moment. Warwickshire have fielded a strong line-up compared to Worcestershire who are playing many inexperienced youngsters.

A poor start to an innings by Worcestershire. The top order fell away after some brilliant bowling from Naqeesh Tahir and Dale Steyn. However, the innings was salvaged by young batsman, Moeen Ali and unlikely partner Roger Sillence, who top scored for the Royals.

A fantastic innings by Jim Troughton was supported well by Jonathan Trott, Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Boyd Rankin as Warwickshire powered their way to 394. Ray Price was Worcestershire's star in the bowling side of things as he was the only bowler who really put up a fight against the Warwickshire batsmen.

Some brilliant teamwork from the Worcestershire batsmen brought up a competitive total for Warwickshire to chase in their 2nd innings. Moeen Ali hit more runs as he struck 86 not out in a wonderful innings. Stephen Moore and Daryl Mitchell were also in the runs as Warwickshire seemed complacent in the field. Boyd Rankin bowled well for his 4 wickets. Will this total be enough?

Worcestershire 22pts beat Warwickshire 8pts by 71 runs
Man of the match is RW Price

A terrible batting performance from Warwickshire saw them fall short of their small target. Manager Zohaib will be very upset with his team's collapse with Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Jim Troughton providing basically the only runs in the innings. Ray Price tore apart the Warwickshire line-up with his canny left-arm-spin. Warwickshire couldn't cope with him as everything he seemed to do worked for him, as he was assisted by the pitch, which turned sharply on the last day.

The next game is between Leicestershire and Middlesex. Middlesex have been predicted to win this tie what with Leicestershire having such a weak squad this season.

A huge first innings score from Middlesex with 3 centuries and a 94 from Nash. Middlesex will be looking to capitalise on this and wrap this game up. The only good news for Leicestershire is that Shane Bond impressed on debut with 6-124, and if it wasn't for him the near impossible task would have been made impossible.

Middlesex 22pts beat Leicestershire 8pts by 135 runs
Man of the match is BA Godleman

The pressure appeared to be too much for Leicestershire, who faltered and Middlesex capitalised, skittling Leicestershire out for 135. A pitiful attempt by Leicester, but the Middlesex bowlers bowled brilliantly, hardly letting the batsmen have anything. Leicestershire will have to rethink their strategy for the next game. Billy Godleman got man of the match for his remarkable display with the bat.

Derbyshire 21pts beat Gloucestershire 5pts by 6 wickets
Man of the match is WW Hinds

A relatively low-scoring match goes in favour of Derbyshire who took the points after a daring second innings. Alex Gidman had the standout innings in Gloucestershire's first innings with a gutsy 120 off 242. Tom Lungley, and new spinner Min Patel did well to take 7 wickets between them. Derbyshire's reply was scuppered by a decent bowling performance from Gloucestershire, the only innings of real importance being that of John Sadler's. 38 extras were conceded in Gloucestershire's second innings, and Dwayne Smith's fifty contributed to a decent score of 248. Derbyshire captain, Rikki Clarke bowled well for his figures of 4-35. Wavell Hinds steered Derbyshire to glory after a wonderful 116 off 185 balls. The Gloucestershire bowlers couldn't stop him on his way to 100, and by the time Carl Greenidge removed him, the damage was already done. A fantastic win for new Derbyshire manager, Zorax, and a big boost to Derbyshire's promotion hopes this season.

Match Drawn (Northamptonshire 4pts, Essex 6pts)
Man of the match is AR Crook

A high-scoring game ends in a predictable draw between these two teams. Both teams were rather batsmen-heavy and the bowlers couldn't perform on this flat Chelmsford pitch. Northamptonshire's first innings was a disappointment, with no one scoring more than 23. Graham Napier bowled well for his four wickets, and Essex went into their first innings, with high hopes. Essex got a pretty average score with most players contributing. Alastair Cook will be upset with getting out for 1, and Monty Panesar was the star of the Northants bowling attack, taking 6 wickets. Northamptonshire's second innings was a complete annihilation of Essex's bowling attack. Young batsman Jo Denly, who recently signed from Kent hit a brilliant 183, yet he was outshone by Andrew Crook with a huge double hundred, putting Northants in a great position. However, it wasn't to be as Essex fought through the remaining overs, scoring 413 in the process. A pretty dismal draw, but some fine batting displays in the second innings.

Kent 22pts beat Nottinghamshire 5pts by 162 runs
Man of the match is MJ Saggers

Kent gave a very professional performance against Nottinghamshire and look to be in with a shout for the County Championship crown this season. Kent's first innings was a good middle order effort with Hall and McLaren scoring fifties to bring the total to 294. A fantastic bowling performance from Ryan Sidebottom made the Kent batsmen find runs hard to come by, and the left arm seamer got some decent swing which helped him claim 6 wickets. The Nottinghamshire first innings was very similar to Kent's with the middle order gaining the bulk of the runs. Captain Chris Read, and veteran Mark Ealham both got half-centuries. Kent's best bowler in that innings was definitely Lance Klusener, who kept it tight and took 3 wickets. Rob Key, Ricky Ponting and Martin van Jaarsveld hit some solid runs to get Kent to a good declaration target. Old-timer Martin Saggers secured the win for Kent taking 4 wickets and gaining a man of the match award. The new Kent manager will be pleased with his team's commitment over the 4 days.

Nice stuff from the Derby boys :) Wavell coming to the party nicely, and the bowling attack doing well, all chipping in. Jaya and Sanga didn't get huge runs, but when they do, we'll be unstoppable!

Surrey 21pts beat Lancashire 4pts by 9 wickets
Man of the match is CD Schofield

Some brilliant bowling from Chris Schofield on this turning pitch at The Oval proved the difference between these teams. Lancashire's first innings was a complete disaster with only Stuart Law really getting off the mark with his half-century. Asif and Schofield tore Lancashire to pieces, claiming 3 wickets each. Surrey made a modest total, despite Muttiah Muralitharan taking 6 wickets. Scott Newman top-scored with 92 to take Surrey to 231. Again Lancashire never got going and Schofield took 5-30 to cap off a brilliant performance against his old team. New Surrey coach will be delighted with this easy result against a big team like Lancashire.

Sussex 21pts beat Hampshire 6pts by 2 wickets
Man of the match is Mushtaq Ahmed

A close encounter in the South Coast derby between these two sides who will both be looking for Championship glory this season. Michael Brown hit 92 not out in Hampshire's decent first innings. James Kirtley took 3-38, including the wickets of Adams, Pietersen and Warne. Sussex's reply wasn't as good as they had hoped, with only Dhoni and Goodwin passing the 50 mark, with Daren Powell being the pick of Hampshire's bowlers. Adams hit 153 as Hampshire gave Sussex a very hard target to chase. It would have been more if Mushtaq Ahmed hadn't taken 6-69, in a brilliant bowling performance. But, Hampshire's work was undone as Michael Yardy smashed 136, being well supported to reach their target.
