SOUTH AFRICA A vs LEICESTERSHIRE FOXES
at Cape Town in a 4 day game

Leicestershire are just about to begin their first pre-season warm up game. Their first challenge is against a very strong South Africa A side, which is filled with many recognisable names from either domestic cricket in England or from previous South Africa games, in a 4 day game in Cape Town. A very strong bowling trio of Henderson, Zondeki and Willoughby with also the prospect of maybe facing Telecamachus. All 4 are exceptionally quick and accurate and will pose a big challenge for the Leicestershire batsman.

Just a few minutes ago, Leicestershire captain for the day Holden won the toss and elected to bat on a Hard surface on a bright and sunny day. That was the right decision as these conditions are favourable to the batsman.

The team for the day is filled with quality, with attacking batsman Hill and Brown opening, with all rounder Mathers at 3. Gardener and Shelton bat at 4 and 5, with Manning the keeper for the day. Captain at 7 will look to mainly focus on his bowling on a batting surface. Then comes the bowling quartet Arslaan Khan, who is capable with the bat. Then comes the fast bowling trio of Suren Ram, Avroneel Biswas and Chez Spin.

Leicestershire will be looking for some decent batting practise on a favourable track and also some bowling to see how they deal in less favourable conditions.

Leicestershire team: Hill, Brown, Mathers, Gardener, Shelton, Manning (WK), Holden (C), Arslaan Khan, Ram, Biswas, Spin

FOXES FIGHT BACK AFTER EARLY LOSSES!

Leicestershire 100 for 2, Day 1 Lunch

Leicestershire foxes have clawed their way back into this 4 day game against South Africa A after losing 2 early wickets.

Mathers (44*) and Gardener (29*) have ensured that the Foxes have had an OK start after the early loss of Hill for 13 and Brown for 7. After winning the toss and electing to bat on a hard surface it looked like a good decision as Brown struck a beautiful cover drive for 4 after only facing 3 balls. What was evident from the pitch was that if you get the ball in the right areas you will get rewards.

One of the fast bowling trio highlighted earlier was Zondeki and he got the break through when a good length ball bounced up and brown looking to dab the ball to third man inside edged it straight to Paul Adams at short leg. Hill fell in almost identical fashion off the bowling of Charl Willoughby.

Then came Mathers and Gardener who batted solidly and fluently. There was an early worry though as Gardener was struck on the helmet knocking him off his feet. These two players have demonstrated that if you bat with patience and courage you can work the single and then when the bad ball comes along you can punish it.

Mathers' 44 not out has been an innings of discipline and fine cricketing shots, with 5 fours including 2 cover drives. Gardeners' has been an innings of grit and determination.

On the bowling front Zondeki has been the pick of the bowlers, he has troubled all 4 batsman and with figures of 1-29 off 9 overs the South Africans will look for him to provide a break through. Charl Willoughby has only bowled 2 overs for 7 with the wicket of Hill, and has been underused. Tyrone Henderson has been consistent but hasn't troubled the batsman yet. De Bruyn only came on to bowl 3 overs before lunch, and Adams also only bowled 3 but he has been punished with some "off the mark" bowling.

Leicestershire will now look to build on the 100 and will look to try and lose no more than a single wicket during this session.

Leicestershire 100-2 (Mathers 44*, Gardener 29*, Zondeki 1-29, Willoughby 1-7)

MATHERS & GARDENER PILE ON RUNS

Leicestershire 254 for 2, Day 1 Tea

Mathers and Gardener are still at the crease after great batting showing the power of playing themselves in. Both batsman have passed 3 figures after reaching 50 reasonably early in the session.

Gardener, the more aggressive of the two, got to 50 off 78 balls with 9 fours but then he pushed even further hitting a hat trick of fours of de Bruyn. Also on his way he hit a towering six over cover and 10 rows back in the crowd. He got to 100 off 120 balls, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation,

Mathers, was more defensive and was playing each ball on their merits, he got to 50 off 92 with 6 fours. Then he accelerated slightly and his second 50, or from 50 to 100 only took him 70 more balls. Playing all around the ground work and nudging the ball and letting Gardener have the strike.

Going into the final session of the day on 254 for 2 shows the strength the position the foxes are in. In the final session we may see Gardener and Mathers take the bowling on more and play the game maybe more attacking and in a One Day fashion. Still to come in is the wickie Manning, Shelton and Holden, who are all sweet players of a cricket ball.

As this session has progressed with very little success for the South African bowlers, they have become tired and have been bowling unaccurately. Zondeki has gone down hill in the 2nd session, with his 15 overs going for 71. Charl Willoughby has only bowled 5 overs but has gone for 21. But the impressive Henderson who hasnt had a wicket in the game yet has economical figures of 15 overs, 1 maiden, 0 wickets for 52.

Leicestershire will look to press on in this session and we may see Mathers and Gardener retire to allow the batsmen after them a chance on this surface.

Leicestershire 254 for 2 ( Gardener 114*, Mathers 104*, Zondeki 1-71, Willoughby 1-21)
