Leicestershire foxes have clawed their way back into this 4 day game against South Africa A after losing 2 early wickets.
Mathers (44*) and Gardener (29*) have ensured that the Foxes have had an OK start after the early loss of Hill for 13 and Brown for 7. After winning the toss and electing to bat on a hard surface it looked like a good decision as Brown struck a beautiful cover drive for 4 after only facing 3 balls. What was evident from the pitch was that if you get the ball in the right areas you will get rewards.
One of the fast bowling trio highlighted earlier was Zondeki and he got the break through when a good length ball bounced up and brown looking to dab the ball to third man inside edged it straight to Paul Adams at short leg. Hill fell in almost identical fashion off the bowling of Charl Willoughby.
Then came Mathers and Gardener who batted solidly and fluently. There was an early worry though as Gardener was struck on the helmet knocking him off his feet. These two players have demonstrated that if you bat with patience and courage you can work the single and then when the bad ball comes along you can punish it.
Mathers' 44 not out has been an innings of discipline and fine cricketing shots, with 5 fours including 2 cover drives. Gardeners' has been an innings of grit and determination.
On the bowling front Zondeki has been the pick of the bowlers, he has troubled all 4 batsman and with figures of 1-29 off 9 overs the South Africans will look for him to provide a break through. Charl Willoughby has only bowled 2 overs for 7 with the wicket of Hill, and has been underused. Tyrone Henderson has been consistent but hasn't troubled the batsman yet. De Bruyn only came on to bowl 3 overs before lunch, and Adams also only bowled 3 but he has been punished with some "off the mark" bowling.
Leicestershire will now look to build on the 100 and will look to try and lose no more than a single wicket during this session.
