Story Somerset - [ICC 05]

Collingwood hit the winning runs with 10 balls to spare flicking the ball away off his pads for a well deserved six wicket win. Our batsman had let us down with only 2 batsman making big scores and only one other batsman making above 5. The bowling wasn't too bad with Godwin and Blackwell especially both getting wickets and keeping the run rate down. Bond bowled extremley economically but just couldn't find that elusive wicket that Somerset needed from him. Peng and Coetzer batted well making 61 and 43 respectively. Ashley Noffke was the main man with the ball taking 3 wickets, but Iqbal did the damage with his beautiful economy rate of an incredible 1.56 per over! Ed Smith wasn't too disheartened at this defeat but he was certainly not happy about the other 5 batsman who got out, apart from him and Michael Burns, saying they should have contributed a lot more than 16 runs between them. He said that the bowlers didn't bowl to badly but they just needed to keep the balls in the right areas and take wickets at the important times.

So our next opposition were a very poor Scotland Saltires team in the Tote Sport League. Sitting at the bottom of the table with eight losses out of eight, they looked a very in-experienced side and hadn't ever looked like winning a match so far this season. Somerset are sitting in the middle of the table at 7th only four points behind the 5th and 6th places. But a promotion spot looked a long way off with only 12 games to close a gap of twelve points. The team needed rebuilding and maybe a shuffle of selection or batting order was going to take palce for the match. Ed Smith spoke to reporters the day before the match on how he felt this game would go. He said that he was expecting a win but told his players not to be complacent. He also mentioned the up and down form recently with anhilation of Northants but a few losses in the Tote Sport League, and said that he wanted to try and keep a steady run of form with a few wins to push us up the table.

hope they will win the next one btw nice pres treva keep it up

So the Scotland game had arrived and I decided to just make one change to the side that was expected to slaughter the Saltires today. Arul Suppiah had come in for James Hildreth who was out of form and on a batting wicket I thought I would need that extra spinner. So I had told Ed that we should chase on this very flat Taunton wicket that we had come to know over the past few years as a very good batting wicket. I thought with a not so strong Scotland side we could try and bowl them out for anything from 190 odd and less. We did win the toss and Ed did as I had said when advising him on what to do. So out came their openers Watts and Weir and with our very strong opening pair of Shane Bond and Richard Johnson, I hoped we cold rip through their line-up early...

Well with just 19 runs on the board and into the 5th over, Johnson got one to bounce just a bit more than expected and Watts just skied it straight in the air to mid off where Burns was waiting to take the catch. Watts had made 12 from 18 deliveries and was looking in a bit of nice form before the ball taht got him. 4 overs later and Johnson bagged his first getting a ball to nip back from outside off stump to hit Weir slap, bang infront of the stumps. He had gone slowly to be fair with only 9 runs from 24 balls and deserved to go. The wicket brought together Straw and Watson who added 63 runs for the 3rd wicket. But as Straw looked to make his half-century he got one that stuck in the pitch, from the old West Indian fast bowler, and chipped it straight back to Mclean with the score on 92/3. This again brought a decent partnership of 40 between Watson and Coles. Watson's fine innings came to an end when he was out, bowled through bat and pad with Suppiah picking up his 1st wicket. Suppiah showed the decision to include him in teh squad was an excellent choice when in overs 35 and 37 bowling both Lockhart and English for 4 and 9 runs respectively...
