Frizzel County Championship Division 2:

Old Trafford
Lancashire Vs Somerset

-----------------------

As the stadium started to fill up the two captains made there way out into the middle for the toss, joined by the umpires and the Chairman Mr J.Simmons MBE. The coin was tossed and Mark Chilton called heads, unfortuantaly it landed on tails and Lancashire were designated the fielding job first. The Lancashire captain was questionned about the descision, heres what he had to say;

Mark: Obviously we would have wanted to win the toss but its no biggy, we would have had a bowl anyway, the clouds are going to really aid Jimmy and Dom who will be opening the bowling today, Big Fred might also get something out of it too, The pitch is pretty hard too so Murali could work his magic, we'll have to wait and see...

With that the captains retreated to the dressing room to relay the news and get ready for a good days cricket.

The teams were announced shortly after the toss, no injury problems for either team, Lancashire will be looking to get after the tasty opening partnership of Marcus Trescothick and Graham Smith.

The Lancashire squad boasts some big names, Freddie, Anderson, Murali, but also some not so well known names that still do a great job, people like Stuart Law and also Mal Loye, both indispensible.

Play gets underway shortly so stay tuned.

Frizzel County Championship Division 2:

Old Trafford
Day 1
Lunch
Lancashire Vs Somerset

Somerset: 107/1

ME Trescothick: 40*
M Burns: 9*

Lancashire no-ball crisis!!!!

-----------------------

Lancashire have been blowing hot and cold in this Frizzel Conty Championship opening fixture, they bowled well for the most part and have restricted Trescothick, Smith and Burns to low totals but have been shooting themsleves in the foot by overstepping the line on 29 different occasions meaning that the bowlers have cost the team 58 runs so far, and its only lunch! It is totally unnaceptable and if this Lancashire team are going to mount a serious challenge on the championship this season then something needs to be done about it and soon!

Graham Smith and Marcus Trescothick going well at 35/0

cricket200520050701152609261zl.png

Trescothick and Smith are a force to be reckoned with and if left unchecked can tear you apart before the match has even got into full swing, The Lancs bowlers did well to keep on top of them and keep the pressure on, Dominic Cork nearly dismissed Graham Smith with the first ball of the second over, a thin edge through to keeper Warren Hegg who took a wonderfull catch high above his head, The Lancashire team ran in to celebrate only to have it cut short as the call came from behind the bowler "NO BALL".

James Anderson has bowled well but is yet to take a wicket

cricket200520050701155905685sl.png

Hogg and Hegg congratulate each other after the first wicket of the day. Graham Smith (9)

cricket200520050701161301065ge.png

It would seem that no-balls were going to cost Lancashire dearly in more ways than one, it wasnt the case however as Smith only added 9 runs before a bowling change paid of, Flintoff softened him up the over before with a great bouncer to the body and a close LBW shout and then young Kyle Hogg rolled his fingers down the seam with his second ball of the day and found the outside edge, the work was not finished there though, Murali was on hand to take a good low catch at first slip, after checking behind him for the no-ball signal Hogg ran off to celebrate with his team mates.

G Smith (9) - c M.Muralitharan - b K.Hogg

Trescothick hammers one away over the slip cordon for four

cricket200520050701164533569oa.png

So, lunch on day 1 and Trescothick is still there and closing in on his 50, he is accompanied by Burns on 9, Lancashire will be hoping that 9 is there lucky number and they can strike again without conceeding too many more runs, Wickets will be the key to success here, they need two quick wickets to get them rolling again, Murali and Brad Hodge were drafted in for a few overs before lunch but its time to get back to business as we pick up where we left off with Freddie Flintoff and Jimmy Anderson combining to make a deadly all english pace attack.

59 extras :O Lancasshire really need to concentrate on their bowling and slow things down until they are set in a rhythm.

I can now confirm that the scorecard for tea on day 1 looks no better in the way of extras, it has now gone up to 97 including 1 wide. Its because im trying to stop it exactly on the line to get full pace instead of dropiing the pace and getting my lengths better, mot of them have been margianl though, Tea update later tonight.
