Sri Lanka tour of England - Limited Overs Cricket (May - June)

I could have predicted that innings from Ian Bell before he even walked out. He's got no place in this side and should be nowhere near it.

That's a bit harsh. Bell is a class act and I think he should be given a chance in this format.

EDIT: Root gone! He has a habit of getting out down the leg side.

You can call him this mythical 'Class act' all you like, but it doesn't make him a better T20 player. He's a guy who scores at a low strike rate in ODIs, hasn't even played a T20 game anywhere for THREE YEARS and it's surprising that he comes in and not only doesn't score many, but takes up plenty of balls doing so? There are plenty of players in County Cricket who could do a much better job, including the guy carrying the damn drinks. So, no, he shouldn't be given a chance. Go back to his county or whatever the hell Warwickshire are calling themselves this year, actually play some T20 matches and we'll see how he goes. Trott always has been a much better T20 player, yet I didn't notice anyone demanding that he be picked in this side and rightfully so.

I take it you're not a fan of Ian Bell then ;)

I still think he deserves a chance in T20. BTW who is carrying the drinks?

Moeen Ali.

I just think, the age he's at, he's never shown himself to be that great a ODI player, let alone a T20 one. He's done ok in ODIs, so deserves to be kept with there, but T20s? No chance. He doesn't even play the form of the game. There is plenty of talent in County Cricket, that we don't need to go back to guys who play enough International cricket as it is.

And with 9 overs to go, the required rate is 11. That's making some hard work for Morgan/Buttler/Bopara down the order.

----------

And Morgan goes trying to force it. Sri Lanka have been brilliant today, especially in the field.

Seeing Woakes' performance with the ball today, but also Buttler behind the stumps, makes me wonder if we'd be able to manipulate the side to get in a classy gloveman - someone like a Bates or a Foster who'd be worth 20 runs a game. Stokes, Woakes and Jordan are all all-rounders, as is Bopara if he keeps his place, so you can afford the specialist.

Also, the sooner the batting and bowling index figures go away (and WASP) the better.

----------

Additionally, nobody on this earth can convince me that Sachithra Senanayake is doing anything other than gaining an unfair advantage by chucking.

We just need to pick 5 bowlers. You bring a specialist bowler in for Bell or Root and this side looks a lot better, without even needing to change any personnel. Other sides have a Bopara or a Root as a 6th bowling option, to bowl the odd one or two. We have them as a 5th bowler, where we always need to get 4 overs from them. That's the problem for me. The likes of Woakes, Jordan/Stokes are good enough to bat at 7 and 8 as well as being capable of bowling 4 overs each. Then you get the likes of Morgan and Buttler coming in slightly earlier, which is no bad thing.

Gurney looks a good prospect though. He's one positive to come out of this match for sure.

Disappointing to lose but oh well...we'll have 'em in the Tests & One Dayers ;)

Ye basically, not sure what went into the selectors head to recall Bell for T20, when Warwickshire doesn't even pick him in that format.

A sensible option would have been to pick Kieswetter to bat @ 3 or maybe even Mark Pettini.

But of course in a perfect world, Pietersen would be @ 3.

----------

I don't understand how Tredwell is playing for England when he can't even get into the Kent side at the moment.

Looking forward to seeing how Carberry does, last season in the T20's he was a beast!

Ye shows how poor our spin stocks are without Swann. Without a top class spinner in the side, ENG are not going to make much impact in T20 cricket, with the next world cup in India.

True on Carberry, but as i mentioned before in the thread, what did Lumb deserve to be dropped?. Seems like the selectors reacted to Carberry's statement of lack of communication from the selectors & recalled him arbitrarily.

If they want to give Carberry another chance, it should just be in the test side. He shouldn't be in the ODI/T20 set-up.

Harry Gurney's domestic stats are not majestical and yet he got a spot. Selected on current form basis?

Whatever it is, he really bowled tight line and length esp to the right handers.

I think he was picked based on his performances in the YB40 last season, He had a very good debut last night.

Sri Lanka were exposed by the short stuff last night, Chris Jordan bowled some absolute beauties! Was impressed with the way Ballance & Root played.

More of a temperament issue. Someone like Chandimal going for slog (eigth ball he was facing) just doesn't look good. He has to bat at 3 or 4 but the management hardly looks ahead of the veterans.

Indeed. Infact all the bowlers extracted good bounce from the surface. Makes me wonder if the Indian team will even last the 50 overs there.

Of course they will. They will prepare for the England tour in the most amazing way possible, by playing ODI's in Bangladesh.

Poor shot from Bell :facepalm

...Oh now Roots gone!
