Tamil Music/Movie Thread

I never have big hopes on a Ajith movie (same as Vijay movies too). Ajith is just a hi-tech Vijay (in fact even worse coz he cant do comedy, he cant dance, people hide his inability to act by saying that he 'underplays' his characters). Compare Ajith and Vijay in a crying scene, and Vijay will score better in it (even though he is also as bad an actor).

Naanayam is REAL GOOD! It generously borrows from some Hollywood movies, but its engaging and entertaining. Sibiraj (Sathyaraj's son) has done a very good job. GOA because of the team had huge expectations and so I felt it to be a let down. There are lot of mixed reviews for Goa (in fact more of below average opinions). Waiting to watch Tamil Padam and Aayirathil Oruvan (waiting for good print coz of glowing reviews). Also waiting for one of the ultimate movies of the year, VINNAITHANDI VARUVAAYA, by the great Gautham Menon and AR RAHMAN! Its releasing on February 19th (2 weeks from now)

Just watched 'Aayirathil Oruvan'. JUST NOT MY TYPE OF MOVIE!!! Watched 40 mins of the film and just deleted it from my PC. Some people that I know have hailed this movie as a masterpiece and a 'coming to age' of Tamil cinema kind of film, but for me, this film doesnt work. I dont like seeing stuff that is puke worthy and that disturbs your mind (the scene where something from the lake gets onto everybody, an area infested with snakes and them getting onto everybody, EEKS!!! TRASH!!!). The snake scene did it for me and I deleted the film. This is why I have never gone near a film like 'Naan Kadavul'. Let me just remain away from these so-called 'classic' films that disturb your mind and that do nothing to entertain. Selvaraghavan films have always been disturbing and AO is another in the series.

Watched 'Asal' too. Well, another Ajith film that lives upto expectations (i.e. DISAPPOINTS!). The last Ajith film that I liked was Villian. Sameera Reddy and Bhavna were good but were glamour quotients. Sampath and Rajiv Krishna did a decent job. So many villians in the film (also Pradeep Rawat and Suresh). Prabu was wasted, Yuhi Sethu invoked laughs only in 1-2 scenes. Music was the worst ever in an Ajith film (probably in the top 10 worst albums in Tamil cinema).

----------------------------------------

Watched 'Tamizh Padam' today. The best ever comedy flick that I have watched in recent times. The movie is just hilarious to the hilt and goes through the roof at many scenes. But a disclaimer : If you have not seen a lot of Tamil cinema, you might not enjoy this movie that much. Because all the comedy (infact its a spoof) is targeted at the cliches that have been adopted in Tamil movies. Almost all major Tamil movies, actors, actresses, music directors, technicians have been targeted in a funny way and they are so good that you end up laughing your stomach out. The movie drags in the second half, but still the comic moments keep coming unabated. The most spoofed actors are Rajnikanth, Vijay, Simbhu and Vijaykanth.

Rating: 5/5

No, but the reviews for the film are utterly glowing. Sify says the film is 'pure magic', while Galatta and Behindwoods also has very positive reviews for the film. Only drawback people say is it is a little slow for the masala movie audiences (do we even need to consider that?).

I am dying to watch the film now.

Saw VV yesterday and I liked it very much.It looks like some ones real life story.

Gautham said in the success meet yesterday that it was fiction. Part of it is inspired from his own life story (he fell in love with his wife while he was an assistant director and his wife too doesnt like watching films just like Trisha's character). But the rest are all fiction.

Waiting to watch the film in a good print. I tried a camera print, but didnt enjoy anything because it was shaky with background noise from the crowd and the night scenes were truly horrible on it. I will give my opinion after watching the film on a good print.

I watched in Sathyam. I didn't like it :( Trisha was gorgeous. Without doubts, this movie has shown her best. But somehow I didn't like it. May be because, I watched Theeradha Villayatu Pillai(TVP) immediately in the same theatre & I liked TVP more than VTV. :p

TVP > VTV???:facepalm Sorry its your opinion on VTV but it would have been better had you not said about TVP.

TVP was garbage, utter garbage. Vishal was pathetic, and it was another attempt by him to toe the 'Rajni, Vijay' line.

I am not a fan of TVP either. :p Just that VTV has bored me up in the theatre & TVP gave a comedy package at the right time after VTV. It should be a better entertainer in my opinion compared to VettaiKaran, Asal, VTV i.e. some recent releases excluding Goa.

VTV's positives :

1) Music
2) Trisha

Negatives :

1) Slow moving
2) No comedy package
3) Logical flaws at many places. Just for example : Well & good, a guy loved a girl & both mutually agreed to go in different directions due to unavoidable situations. fine, but when you meet after long time, a married girl going alone with a guy to a theatre? :sarcasm It won't happen anywhere. May be it's a logical bug to me, & may be people are so broad minded. ;)

The last one is not a flaw. Maybe you are not in areas where people are this broad minded. People who live in the upper middle class and high class society of Tamil Nadu can be like this. We are changing for sure. And also according to the film, Trisha is living in UK/New York with her husband and is shown as coming back to Chennai and watching the movie with Simbhu. There are more chances for people who go abroad and get more broad minded. People change a lot after going abroad (I have noticed this in my own family itself).

Yes it comes to personal preference in the end. I definitely won't be fine with my wife going with someone( whom the entire family hates ) to a movie after marriage. :) Life after marriage is definitely a different story compared to the life before marriage in view of Society & culture.

I cannot speak more about culture & society for TVP either because its' worse even in TVP's story line. :p Just because I had more expectations on VTV & 0% expectations on TVP ( I never wanted to watch that movie in first place & it was just an accident I chipped in to that movie ), Yuvan's music + Santanam+Vishal's comedy + fast moving story gets my vote. :D

Maybe you should watch VTV again. I am going to do it too. I watched VTV on a very poor print and didnt like the second half much because it was dark already and the print was bad too. I liked the first half a lot.

Sorry for continuing on the debate, but the husband might not know anything about the wife's history. Thats possible too, that the entire family might not have said anything about the affair to the guy who eventually marries her. Also we never know if Trisha informed her husband/family that she is watching a movie with her ex-boyfriend (she could have lied to her family and would have come). Gautham didnt dwell much into the details, so you cant call that a 'flaw'. Even if all those were true, personally I would let my wife visit her friend (even if it was her ex) because I believe a successful relationship is built around faith over one another.

Yes yes, no harm in seeing a friend. But a girl going out alone with some guy( to movie or to beach or to dinner, it doesn't make difference ) after marriage is something which society never accepts. In society's view - Either they would have looked as husband/wife or the pair waiting for the marriage.

Believe me, I have faced all these in my own personal life. Well, it's a different story then. Anyways, it comes to personal preference. Though I am broad minded, I would be happy to send my wife to visit her friend's place or group get-together, but definitely won't allow to go out with a guy alone even if he had been her best friend ( definitely best friend won't call her alone to a movie :sarcasm ). Only reason, I don't want to give a chance to society to speak even a single word wrong about us that might even spoil that friendly relation in future.

My view is - I dont care much about the society. As long as you live according to what other people say or feel, you cant live a happy life (in most cases).

Thats how it should be, and thats what Gautham has portrayed in VTV. Gautham's films reveal his forward thinking mindset (his movies portray his heroines as very strong characters). Not each and every scene has to confine exactly with the current reality of Tamil Nadu/India or whichever country. It could also be a visual of how it can be. So calling it a flaw is wrong. Just that you dont agree with it.
