Tendulkar To Retire after his 200th Test :(

Firstly, test match attendances in major venues in India are as big as England. English grounds on an average have capacities half that of Indian venues. Just look at recent test matches against England, Australia and you will notice that crowds have been consistently around 15-20k on an average in the major venues and we had close to full houses during weekends in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore recently. Given that weekdays we generally get close to half full when India bat, the attendances are`nt as bad as people make it sound like. The bigger capacity stadia make it look as if we have aweful attendance compared to England. Sheer numbers would point to a different story.

well when ever I see it on TV it looks empty, forget about it being half full lol

Maybe I'm wrong, do you have any stats backing that up?

This just gave me a small smile. Which match you were referring as 'Empty'? India Vs Zimbabwe? India Vs Bangladesh? :)

Last Test @ Eden Gardens, India Vs England

8am Eden Gardens. The throbbing soul of Test cricket in India. Most conclusive proof that Test cricket is still relevant in India. One of the most intimidating places for teams to visit. Usually, the 12th man here is some 70,000 mad people appealing along with the Indian bowlers. You just don't want to be the new batsman in when you are visiting here and have just lost two wickets in quick succession

That didn't prove anything, in fact it started off with "small crowd in" but even then, from what I've seen with my own eyes, the crowds have been small. I can't remember the exact details of that last test but India were winning the series and as a team were in full team, I would not be so surprised by a "large" turn out.

Anyway, this is irrelevant because you obviously can't back up what you're saying, my point was that it would be a big surprise for me if all 5 days of every test v the Windies was sold out for the sake of Tendulkar alone.

@Adi (aditya123) - Looks like Sachin's retirement has pleasantly (in a way) made the BCCI award the WI tests to big test centres, Kolkata and Mumbai. These two will get decent crowds for tests anyways. And with Sachin's farewell series, this is going to be really exciting to watch test cricket even on TV with sweltering crowds. Especially that final day at Wankhede when Sachin ends his journey is going to be massive! His mother, his coach Ramakant Achrekar (the guy who sculpted Sachin), etc all are going to be there. I wish I could be at the Wankhede that time. :(

I like the fact that they awarded both venues "out of turn" (according to BCCI rotational policy, Bangalore and Ahmedabad were to get it). Since Sachin wanted his last in Mumbai, the BCCI appeased Eden Gardens (who were in a tussle to grab Sachin's final game) by allotting them the first test. Hope Sachin doesn't get out cheaply in Kolkata. We do not want that riot that happened when Sachin was out for a golden duck against Pakistan in 1999 (via a Shoaib Akthar obstruction).

It's not just sad news for Indians. It's a sad news for all the cricket lovers. Sachin is a cricket legend. There is no doubt about that. I am a Pakistani, and I proud that I have seen the time of Tendulkar. Although he will retire from cricket, he will remain in our minds forever. And yes, I am sure that all of us will inform our grandchildren that we have seen the live matches of Sachin.

Of course it is a sad news for everybody. Sachin is almost every cricketer's idol no matter if they play for Australia, India, Bangladesh, England, etc. When Sachin comes out to bat, the cheer from the crowd is lauder than that when India wins the match. Heck even when the screen shows Sachin's face the crowd goes mad. We won't be seeing any of that anymore. I can already imagine not getting that feel when watching the game. :noway

I just wish to see steve bucknor somewhere among the audience as well! :D

Just look at any footage from the last 3 test series in India (against NZ,ENG and AUS) and you will find that on the business days of the test match, you generally have crowds way bigger than England.Even during the NZ series which is`nt a huge draw, Hyderabad and B`lore were almost full on days 3 and 4. Its just Mohali and Ahmedabad which have real poor attendances.

Sometimes you are lost for words. So much has been said about the great man. I have had the honour and privilege of watching him destroy bowling attacks all over the globe in his prime and amazingly even in his twilight years. I would never forget the beating he gave us in 2003 world cup game. His century at Chennai test of 1999-2000 against us was one of the greatest of all times. He has many many admireres yet many critics who are just jealous of his class and the fact that he is not from their part of the world.
I wish him the all best. I already see India producing the next crop of great batsmen in form of Kohli, Rohit and Dhawan. I am especially enthralled at watching Kohli blossom into all time great in this decade.

Agreed that we all will miss Tendalya! But i don't really think cricket will die and stuffs. These are like looking like a cartoon for me. We have the next generation cricketers. People would have felt so when Gavaskar and Vishwanath went too but it was the Sachins and Rahuls after that. Now its time for Virats and Sharmas... i meant Rohit :p

he's going:wave but he will surely make 200 in his 200th test match ATB sachin:cheers

Might just go to watch him play live for the final time, stadium is less than 10 mins away from my place.:D
