Statistics

Tests:- 1944 runs @ 34.10 (5 100s, Best 212) in 31 tests
First Class:- 19410 runs @ 50.67 (57 100s, Best 314) in 260 matches

Jaffer is the legend of Indian Domestic cricket with over 12000 runs in Ranji Trophy, the most by any player. He has won 10 titles in the competition for two teams. Disappointingly, he could not convert the same into international scenario.

With two of the best all-rounders of their times in the XI already, it is time to go hunt for some batting steel. And who better to add that than :sri::bat:Marvan Atapattu (batting average: 39.02)? His very presence in this list is because of the infamous start to his career where he scored just a solitary run across three games. Even including his extended run in 1997 where he only came good in November and averaged 29 bumps his overall average up to 40 and he averages 42 as an opener in his entire career. Atapattu failed to score a century in only his last year and averaged less than 35 only once in the year before that, a sign of his remarkable consistency and you could always rely on him to provide a solid base upon which the likes of Jayasuriya and Sangakkara could attack reliably. The only countries that he has a poor record in is South Africa and Pakistan and for an opener, I shall take that.

I shall go with :sri::bat:Roy Dias. He was Sri Lanka's first international batsman of class and authority and was a key figure in their first few years playing a crucial role in their first ever match and series victories. Along with Abbas and Vengsarkar, he added a bit of subcontinental flair with his trademark drives and timing. It was unfortunate that a batsman of his talents could not add to his record with tests earlier in the peak of his career as like several players who relied on their wrists he would struggle with those reflexes eluding him in his thirties and he could not quit the game yet as his team still needed him due to the likes of Aravinda de Silva not fully establishing themselves. A steep fall from grace meant that his averaged dropped below 40 significantly which makes him eligible here. Nevertheless, at his peak he was capable enough to be called close to world class, averaging in the low to mid 40s for most of his career before the decline and was the first Sri Lankan player to cross 1000 runs in test cricket.

As sometimes the sole saviour of Sri Lankan cricket team in it's infancy days though, Dias will be well used to playing for a team that isn't packed with stars and he shall impress as the number four which makes the best use of his talent in my side.

Statistics

Tests:- 5105 runs @ 35.69 (4 100s, Best 135) in 93 tests
First Class:- 11641 runs @ 44.26 (25 100s, Best 238) in 205 matches

Cricinfo- "Ranatunga had an uncanny ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over using deft placement on both sides of the wicket, combined with fluent driving through the offside in particular. He was a deceptive and useful medium-pace bowler"
Ranatunga is the 1996 World Cup winning captain for Sri Lanka. He appeared in first test of Sri Lanka against England. Sri Lanka won their first test as well as first test series under his leadership.
He will bat at 5 in my lineup

@Aislabie next in the queue
The Indian 40/30 team?

2013-12-Nawaz.jpg

:pak: :bwl: Sarfraz Nawaz
Test stats - 177 wickets @ 32.75 (4 5WI, best 9/86) in 55 matches
First-class stats - 1,005 wickets @ 24.62 (46 5WI, best 9/86) in 299 matches

Bowling VARP (seam) - :up: 28.13%

The gentle run and action of Pakistani swing bowler Sarfraz Nawaz would not have been out of place on the village green, but the results were almost invariably excellent. His most famous spell - the tireless nine-for against Australia in which he claimed the wickets of Whatmore, Hilditch, Border, Wood, Sleep, Hughes, Clark, Hogg and Hurst (Yallop was run out) fell squarely in the middle of a year-long purple patch when the then 30-year-old could legitimately claim to be the best seamer in the world. The theme of his fellow bowlers doing little wasn't new - his expected "replacement" seamer had a bowling average of over 35.

@Aislabie's XI so far:

2. :eng: :bat: Alec Stewart
