The Apple Thread

Technically they can't tell if you've jailbroken if you restore your iPhone afterwards

Yep, and that's what I'll be doing when I sell my phone. What they don't know won't hurt them.

Jailbroke my phone last night. Got Cydia installed but haven't had much time to look and see what's on offer.

Sorry to say this, but all the stuff on your phone is probably toast. A few months ago when I was flying back from India I made the mistake of turning off my phone. When I turned it back on it showed the connect to iTunes sign. And of course iTunes did not recognize it. After a lot of massaging I was finally able to get the phone to restore but lost pretty much everything on it that I hadn't backed up (phone numbers, photos, music, etc.).

iTunes is honestly the shittiest piece of software I've had forced down my throat. For all the iPhone's benefits in usability, iTunes makes the the thing completely ridiculous to synchronize. In fact, I've given up on synchronizing my iPod Touch with a computer any more because every time I connect it, it wants me to set it up as a new device (thus erasing everything).

iTunes is the soar worm in the Apple. 'nuff said.

I've contacted a guy who's a developer of iPhone browser. I told him i could get my iPhone recognized in recovery mode on iTunes, so he said it's not difficult to do the same on his software (Which is close to SSHing your iphone). So eventually i might stand this thing for a week before an update from him comes up and i'll see what I can do. All i need to do is free up some space and the device would spring back to life.

Honestly, many people quit easily. This is the 4th-5th time my iphone took a swim into crisis, and all the answers i've found on the Internet were of those who gave up impatiently or ordered a safe route. While i found an answer all those times myself someway and got away safe and the problem was the same as anybody else who gave up. So i think there's still a lot left potentially for a workaround.

I'd defo not go for a restore, too much stuff in there. I'd rather have all in it and bricked than get it back working fine with nothing left. Defo not me though. :p

hmm, I don't know why that keeps happening. I haven't had any of those issues with iTunes, granted I have worked mostly on a mac for the last ~2 years or so. But even before that...it has generally been OK.

I wish iOS devices could be a just a little more independent now. I think these days they are replacing computers more and more, and if we were able to manage music and photos and stuff directly on the device, it would be so much better. I hate syncing...If I want to download a song off a website, or download a youtube video I should be able to do it right on the iPhone/iPad. Going on my computer, importing it to itunes, syncing... it is just such a clunky process.

If i'm not wrong a little app was taken down recently from the App store called Mitube. You can download the vids directly from youtube. Sucks the way Apple are ensuing their so called rules and regulations among those out-of-jail apps.

I used to be on iOS 4.2.1, tethered jailbreak on my iPhone. Thought I'd upgrade to 4.3.1 and get an untethered jailbreak. Encountered a number of problems though...

Firstly, my iPhone didn't want to upgrade at all. Kept on coming up with an error. Tried to restore it first, and couldn't restore it either. Tried on a different computer and again I couldn't do anything. In the end I had to add an extra line to my hosts file in system32 so that iTunes didn't check with the apple server.

Secondly, I jailbroke it but cydia doesn't want to open. It's a blank white square. I think it's because I upgraded my jailbreak and I was really supposed to restore then upgrade. Nothing I do is fixing it so it looks like I'm going to restore my iPhone. Fun.

The restore fixed it thankfully. The annoying problem is that I have to redo all my settings and cydia apps

What are the benefits of iOS 4.3.1 over 4.1 ? I have 4.1 on my iPod Touch, and since it's jailbroken, I don't want to upgrade unnecessarily if that's going to remove all my stuff.

Just found a cool app called mungogamer wireless steering wheel for PC and Mac. It's exactly what it says it is, a wireless steering wheel for your racing games. What you do is download the app, download the server from their website and configure the controls in game and it uses the iPhone's accelerometer (and the gyroscope in the iPhone 4) to read your actions. So if you want to turn left, tilt the phone left etc.

The controls are clear and it's really easy to use. I find the response more accurate than most PC steering wheels you can buy with the exception of the Fanatec Porsche GT2 wheel (which is quite expensive).

There's a lite version available so it's really worth giving it a go.

I think I'd prefer feeling like I'm holding an actual steering wheel :p

Next time I've plugged my phone in, I'll try and post a screenshot of my iphone :)

How so? It takes a while for what you do with the wheel to be reflected on the screen? I wouldn't think you would find that problem with wheels...

Unless you buy a decent one like that Porsche wheel. That is superb. It looks cool and is very good in game. My cousin got bought one. Bit pricey but if you're a hardcore driving game enthusiast, then worth it.

The app is much better than most physical wheels. Connect it through your wifi, set up controls and away you go. But there's nothing better than the real thing but the police don't look too kindly on people who do 200 kph on the motorway. Stupid government.

Should move to Germany and go driving on the autobahns :p
