I don’t think VAR is helping football, well certainly not the way it is implemented anyway

Which is what I’ve said already, every issue with technology remains with the implementation or human side of it. VAR was very good in the World Cup and has been very solid in the La Liga so far along with being fairly good in the Bundesliga.

The main issue with VAR in Premier League has been the referees not even using it for most of the situations. What is the point of technology that is not even used?

I would agree about VAR to be honest; it might be implemented better if it was put into the hands of the players, with only a certain number of incorrect challenges allowed in the match like you see in tennis and cricket. That way, if players really feel that they've been fouled, they can challenge it. If they don't then it's something of a tacit admission that they've dived. But I digress...

I can very easily see this be exploited for the purpose of time wasting and disrupting any opposition move by teams managed by Mourinho or Pep.

I think the umpires should just be abolished. They’re anyway there to only signal the obvious stuff! Everything else is determined by the third umpire. It’s time for no umpires and technology to make all decisions. It will also remove the “umpires call” which really really pisses me off!

Could just get rid of the batsmen and bowlers as well, and just watch Cricket 19 sims with the umpire judgement set to 100...

If technology is allowed to rule sport then we will have clinical cold events. Sport is about human endeavor, human excellence, human mistakes, human strength and human fragility. I agree with you though that we might as well take out the umpire if we are going to use all the technology there is.....either one or the other. The DRS is not improving the game the way it is set up. It was initially brought in to stop howlers being made......England will be glad it isnt working as it was thought of! ;)

Tbh umps are just lazy, you see the umps back in the day fully leaning in when the ball is bowled...that's concentration I tell ya :D

Ha ha the umps back in the day didn’t have DRS highlighting all their errors either:p

Is it just me that thinks Paine is tactically a better captain than Smith? Don't get me wrong I am big fans of both and look up to both of them as leaders and players but I tend to see Smith struggle when the opposition is running away in a chase for example. Some might say that Smith thrives on being in charge because it significantly raises his batting skills but some occasions I've seen Smith struggle in terms of captaincy were against Sri Lanka in 2016 where we were white-washed and against England at home where we lost 4-1 in 2018. Full strength teams on both occasions as well. I just really like Paine's cricket brain, however I'd still give Smith the captaincy after the year is over due to his ridiculous average leading(regardless of how he is performing in the ashes atm).
Carey is also being talked about replacing Paine after the ashes but Carey is no where near Paine in terms of wicket keeping, During the World Cup, Carey's keeping was below-par for LOI standards which means he definitely isn't fit for test cricket as it. I always find it funny how I've been wanting Carey in the ODI lineup as soon as Smith and co were banned, supporters of Australia and even supporters of other nations were against it but I knew he always had potential. Now after the break-out season with the bat he had in the World Cup, everyone wants him rushed into the test squad.

Jimmy out for the series. Shame, probably would have come back in for Woakes if hes carrying an injury. Overton added to the squad to cover that eventuality I suppose.

It's both unbelievable and completely believable that England have not made a single change to the batting for the upcoming Test.

If I were Ollie Pope or Dom Sibley I'd have Ed Smith's picture on a dart board in every room of my house

Personally. I think it's a really good way to break someone like Jason Roy into the test team, by continually forcing him to open against one of the most potent seam attacks in the game :facepalm

It feels like India were more than happy to have Roy and Jennings open than Cook a year ago. Atleast they would've been 3-2 than 4-1. Frankly that series paints England as very strong side in Test Cricket right now but the fact was India's loopholes cost them the series but they made sure they exposed England's weakness for others to bank on them. They need an overhaul in this format tbh just like they did to their ODI side.
