Mitch Marsh replacing Wade at least for OT? I know his mediocre test record will be criticized but he is bowling and batting well and says he is 100% fit. I know Wade scored a really nice 100 too but he hasn't really done much since that. Our left handlers have been struggling against Broad and Woakes as well. From 5 different left handed in the top 6 last game , there have only been 3 50+ scores from 26 innings from our left handlers in the last 3 games. Thoughts?

Denly opens for Yorkshire

He batted mostly at four, for Kent, last season and scored a lot of runs. Then got picked to open for England. Then got put at three. This season he batted mostly for Kent at three, probably because he'd been picked to play there for England, and averaged 56. Then they decided to put him at four, where Joe Root has scored a lot of runs. And now he's opening because Jason Roy, a county number 5 or 6, can't open and will bat at four.

Meanwhile, Sibley and Pope keep churning out the runs.

Is it just me that thinks Paine is tactically a better captain than Smith? Don't get me wrong I am big fans of both and look up to both of them as leaders and players but I tend to see Smith struggle when the opposition is running away in a chase for example. Some might say that Smith thrives on being in charge because it significantly raises his batting skills but some occasions I've seen Smith struggle in terms of captaincy were against Sri Lanka in 2016 where we were white-washed and against England at home where we lost 4-1 in 2018. Full strength teams on both occasions as well. I just really like Paine's cricket brain, however I'd still give Smith the captaincy after the year is over due to his ridiculous average leading(regardless of how he is performing in the ashes atm).
Carey is also being talked about replacing Paine after the ashes but Carey is no where near Paine in terms of wicket keeping, During the World Cup, Carey's keeping was below-par for LOI standards which means he definitely isn't fit for test cricket as it. I always find it funny how I've been wanting Carey in the ODI lineup as soon as Smith and co were banned, supporters of Australia and even supporters of other nations were against it but I knew he always had potential. Now after the break-out season with the bat he had in the World Cup, everyone wants him rushed into the test squad.

A case of rose tinted glasses seems to be prevalent all over the cricketing world, I’ve seen calls for Smith to be made captain, Starc to return ASAP and Wade to become the keeper when he has entirely dropped keeping in tests and has even become a part time bowler!

To go from captains like Ponting, Clarke and Smith who were also arguably the best players in their respective teams to someone like Paine is the reason for the calls to axe him. Yet, there is no reason for the best batsman to be the captain too, England’s most successful ODI captain is testament to that. I would also argue that Paine has been a better captain tactically than Smith, the only faults with him so far have been his shambolic use of DRS and his field settings in the last session of the previous test.

Smith is also not a good alternative either, in addition to letting opposition teams off the hook while chasing, he has done that even when they look utterly rattled in addition to his rather defensive fields and tactics. It was under his watch that one of the biggest sporting scandals in Australian history occurred and there were other controversies prior to it like Warner’s transgressions, DRS brainfade etc.

As for Carey, he completely proved me wrong in the World Cup with the bat and I’m not willing to look terribly wrong yet again. :p With the gloves however, Carey still has a long way to go if he is to replace Paine in the future, let alone now!

I get a feeling England will win their next match while the one at The Oval would end in a draw. England favourites for a 2-1 win.
