We still have to battle to get above Afghanistan in the World Test Championship :spy

I think England could bring Pope in at a six or four, question would be who gets the chop? Headingley meant England didn't have to face the tough questions and you feel like they will stick with what they've got to try and win at The Oval. I still think Denly is first head on the block, unfairly, but they can't really justify dropping him ahead of Roy, Bairstow or Buttler. So, I could see them sticking with the top seven.

Maybe they'll change the bowling; to rest someone or if they fancy Woakes or Curran instead of Overton.

The ECB have simply got to forget about one day cricket now and focus on the test stuff. I did see someone suggest the idea of having different coaches for the two formats, however don't see them doing anything as innovative as that.

Think they will be more interested in the T20 world cup now to be honest.

Who do you think should be brought in as those proper numbers 3 & 6,also what are your feelings about the captaincy. I have heard someone say the new coach could galvanise him but got serious doubts on that.

I think Root is very young in the job. The criticism of him is with his batting. Something is not right with these start stop knocks. He's too good to be wasting so many chances. I will put this loss actually down to him and Burns. Once you are in and past 50 you just have to cash in.

I think Bairstow needs to be dropped. He needs to be told to get back in the nets and bat and bat and bat. Enough hiding behind the gloves and he needs to get back to basics and be a proper test batsman. That's how he became an international cricketer. The white ball opening and all that is icing, not the cake.

I would definitely consider Ollie Pope at 6. I really like the make of him. I also saw a couple of openers being considered with Burns so I would slot them in at 3 since the openers are anyway so vulnerable.

Steve Smith and the two tall 90mph Aussie quicks relentlessly pegging away have been the difference.

Maybe the new coach will have his own ideas about who should be the captain of the test team.

I will admit that the ECB's obsession with the hundred and T20 could massively hit our preparation for the next ashes in 21/22.

Harmison, who played 63 Tests - including all five games during the 2005 epic series - suggested it will be impossible for the run glutton to change anybody's opinion.

"I don't think you can forgive him," Harmison told talkSPORT.

"When you're known as a cheat - and he is, I'm not going to sugarcoat it, the three guys cheated - that's on your CV.

"You're marked and you take it to your grave.

Someone is salty AF ...

The fact is that the Captaincy has affected his confidence as a batsman because of which he is failing to convert his starts into big scores. He was doing all good till Pakistan toured England back in 2016. And was also doing well when he toured of India later that year before a slump in form and was later handed the Captaincy when he was going through the poor run of form. His form never improved since then.

I can't understand why would people want exclusion of a player like Buttler. I don't think he has done anything wrong since last 2 years apart from the slump in form in this Ashes. I can understand Bairstow's exclusion as he isn't the same player anymore.

He has one century in 35 matches, the same number as Chris Woakes (in fewer games). He's not in the side as a wicketkeeper so I'd say that's not good enough as a specialist batsman. His average is slightly higher as a batsman to be fair. But, when you have Foakes and Pope out of the side, both who have better domestic averages (in Pope's case 59) I'd say they're worth a try over Buttler and Bairstow.
