Can he forgive Marcus Trescothick and his pack of Murray Mints?
Or thinking that second slip is the wicketkeeper?[DOUBLEPOST=1568023220][/DOUBLEPOST]Genuine question: do the Aussies play more red ball cricket? Why are they obviously better adapted? Or is the difference in batting between the sides Smith?

I think they've been better prepared. They played red ball as part of the A tour, in county cricket and in between tests. When they've made changes they seem to have been planned or like for like swaps. They haven't reshuffled the same seven batsman hoping to find a magic formula.

@Dutch Not to pick one anyone, but just a quick scan through the Lancashire and Surrey records over the last four years.

Neither Buttler or Roy had played county cricket this season (for obvious and understandable reasons).

In the previous three, Buttler has played 6, scored 207 at an average of 20.7 with one 50. Of course he's an outstanding white ball player but if that kind of record in first class cricket is what it takes to get in the test side side; hand me a bat, I'm ready to go coach.

Roy does have a far better record in that same time frame (averaging 42.7), but most (if not all of that) of that would have been down the order. Although of the 18 games he's played in the last four years, 11 of them were in 2016.

Compare that with Labuschagne who played 10 matches for Glamorgan, Burns played 9 for Surrey. After Smith and Stokes they've looked the stand out players.

Stats nerdery over.

There is a very good article on Cricinfo from George Dobell about England needing to take a long hard look at themselves after this tour

They apparently did it after getting skittled for 51 in Barbados back in 2009,he suggests maybe we need some brutal home truths.

Yeah I read that and it made a lot of sense: we are not as good as we think we are.....okay, how do we get better?

The whole series has stunk of arrogance from England and the ECB. Expecting to roll up under prepared and beat the team with one of the best red ball bowling attacks in the world.

We were hardly prepared and refused to adapt, letting a Ben Stokes miracle gloss over the obvious cracks after Leeds.

Compare that to Australia, with there amount of red ball cricket, using the Duke ball in their domestic game, and we never had or deserved a chance.

Time for a long look in the mirror for all involved on our side.

He has one century in 35 matches, the same number as Chris Woakes (in fewer games). He's not in the side as a wicketkeeper so I'd say that's not good enough as a specialist batsman. His average is slightly higher as a batsman to be fair. But, when you have Foakes and Pope out of the side, both who have better domestic averages (in Pope's case 59) I'd say they're worth a try over Buttler and Bairstow.

Ok so he hasn't had a good average and hasn't scored much of centuries or you would say just one century. But is that enough to put him out of the side ? To me he has looked absolutely solid whenever he is out there in the middle. Even Yesterday he did well. He has been a batsman that can hang in around for longer periods. I think he was the best English batsman in all 3 formats just over a year ago. I don't see any real reason to drop him.

Was is a good word. Past tense. All I see now is a guy out of nick and desperate for a break. No one said to drop him forever, but the guy 100% needs a break from the international scene, and possibly a winter playing shield cricket or similar. Add Roy and Bairstow to that list as well

Boys Club.....nobody allowed in.[DOUBLEPOST=1568032424][/DOUBLEPOST]Australia must be having a good laugh!

I see a lot of questions here and I am going to put my two cents forward-

First and foremost, England have to accept that they have been lopsided with their preparations for the past ten years. It is unacceptable that you either start becoming a red ball specialist team (until 2015) or a white ball specialist team (now) and strike no sort of balance.

Secondly, having two coaches for different formats or a different support staff is not a solution. This obsession surrounding big ticket names in cricket team balconies seems big in England and Pakistan of late but it's the cricketers who change fortunes, not coaches. You need one balanced coach who works like a friend with cricketers who knows when to give gun cricketers a break and try fresh people.

Thirdly, this logic of playing people who have played 12544363 test matches in dead rubbers needs to stop. The selection for the last test is a fine example. When are you going to try an Ollie Pope, a number 3 or a Sam Curran? Broad's cricket doesn't need the third test to prove he's a quality test match bowler in these conditions. It's a fact. Also, Sam Curran was the man of the series last summer against the number 1 test team and he hasn't played a game this summer. Isn't that kind of stupid? Woakes was dropped after one bad test for Overton which is rubbish selection after Woakes bowled his shoes off in the first two tests! Jason Roy and red ball cricket don't go hand in hand. Period.

You cannot mix white ball and red ball cricket. To amplify- Bairstow who is a far better batsman than Wade is hiding behind his keeping gloves so that he can make his 30's and 40's down the order and keep his place while Australia have the confidence to play a Wade as a pure batter. THAT in itself says a lot. They dropped Khawaja who has been their best test bat while the three banned test cricketers couldn't play. Bairstow and Buttler both cannot play together if they both think they can make it with 30's and 40's. One of them has to put their hand up and be a proper number 3/4/6 depending on where Root prefers to bat and make tons.

Speaking of tons, Root needs to go back and take a look at what Smith has done not just in this, but Ashes overall and see what he has done. Again, he has the same ability but he needs to convert and be more ruthless and hungry almost. I think he's a good lad and a fine cricket brain. Let him keep the job for now. Give him time. But, the clock is now ticking for sure because of this shambles.

This English team is blessed with insane ability and depth and I think they have not fulfilled their potential. It says a lot when they were the first English side to become world champions!
